Read a Friggin’ Book is a mother-daughter podcast where bonding meets books and banter. Each episode, we dive into a young adult fiction novel, reviewing the drama, the tropes, the twists, and the cringe with a healthy dose of humor (and occasional eye rolls). What started as a compromise to delay social media turned into our favorite way to connect: over stories, sass, and sarcastic commentary. Whether you’re a fellow YA fan or just here for the laughs, we’ve got a seat saved for you.

We’re back in Dallas and surprise, surprise...we’re already confused.
Here’s what we know so far:
Something weird happened in a wine cellar.
Whatever it was has caused Grayson to stop Grayson-ing.
Avery has to survive six more weeks with these people before she can inherit the money.
A surprise guest arrives at the house and she could bring this whole operation crumbling down.
Xander is playing detective.
Max got a tattoo.
What’s the most interesting part? We’ll let you decide.

It's our last day in Bayview, friends.
We're saying goodbye to our friends as they move on to the next phase in life and we talk about what we liked and didn't like in season one of the Peacock series based on these beautiful books.
This series is what made Charlie fall in love with reading and it's the first series we read together so if you're here thank you so much for being a part of our Murder Club journey!
We're going to start 2026 off in Dallas with the Hawthornes so if you don't already have your books go grab a copy of The Final Gambit so we can all be stressed out together!
For now, lets send our crew off in style while we hold back the tears.

Tragic backstories, shocking twists, revenge for all the right reasons, a last-minute rescue, love, hate, and the US Postal Service... Karen M. McManus really brought it in this set of chapters.
We’re almost at the end of our time in Bayview, but this crew isn’t going quietly onto the bookshelf. Join us (and especially Addy) as we dig into Jake’s deeply messed-up childhood and finally start uncovering the truth behind so much of what we’ve been through.

Our time in Bayview is almost over but there needs to be just a little more drama before we leave.
Phoebe and Emma finally confront Owen about his role in the Truth or Dare game, setting off a chain of events that sends Phoebe on a solo mission where she comes face to face with some familiar wallpaper.
Meanwhile, as Nate cleans out his closet, Bronwyn debates whether to turn crucial evidence over to the Bayview police. One of those things will prove useful
Later that night, a simple request for a ride spirals into a terrifying night for Addy. And with the end drawing closer, its time for something terrible to happen to Nate...again.

Let’s make one thing clear, this is officially a Kris Fan Account™, and these chapters absolutely prove why. Karen M. McManus really delivered in chapters 26–30. We’re talking angst, mystery, surprise stalkers, giant hats, and another kidnapping. Just Bayview things.
The crew attempts a calm, drama-free beach day, but Detective Maeve is booked and busy as always. A high-speed chase results in a very angry Cooper and Addy gets hit with some shocking news that sends her back into a tailspin.
Nate. Deserves. Nice things. And he finally gets them! Even more shocking... he finds an unlikely ally in Vanessa. Do we like her? Still no. But she's working on herself and we can appreciate that. Character development is powerful.
Phoebe does some self reflection and tries to make ammends, just before Emma stumbles onto a chilling discovery.
And of course: Kris, the backbone of this entire operation, the moment, the icon, and an absolute king. Once again, he swoops in to push the story forward like the legend he is. We adore him.

Nate and Bronwyn recruit Patrick for their latest shenanigans, and shocker: it immediately leads to a gruesome discovery. Silver lining. it comes with another clue about the new game!
Addy and Keely have the “what are we?” talk, and Addy’s mom makes a last-ditch attempt at being supportive. Vanessa tries soft-launching her redemption arc at what should’ve been a party but somehow doubles as a Murder Club meeting. Classic Bayview.
Over at the Lawson house, someone finally recommends therapy only for the idea to be yeeted directly into the trash. Emma realizes how far gone Owen is and Phoebe gets to briefly bask in her rightness before heading off to meet Lucinda (queen of our hearts) for the inside scoop on Jake’s mom.
Does all of this look extremely suspicious from the outside? Absolutely. Are any of us being questioned? Absolutely not. The BPD cannot be bothered.
We close with Jake’s dad using his own child as emotional ammunition against Katherine, and honestly… the ick is off the charts.
Karen, you're literally the best!

Friend of the pod Karen M. McManus delivers some big laughs this week which means something terrible is definitely about to happen. But for now, we’re soaking up every chaotic moment with our favorite friends, even when their love language is making everyone uncomfortable.
When Bronwyn is five minutes late, everyone immediately spirals into panic and launches a full-blown search-and-rescue mission only to stumble across the world’s worst person and his dumb wallpaper.
Luis tries to get Cooper to enjoy the finer things in life, while Cooper is just out here trying to buy himself a Subaru.
Phoebe finally opens up to Knox and regrets it almost instantly.
And Kris? Kris is still smarter than all of us.
Tune in for drama, laughs, and questionable decisions.

Things are ramping up with the Bayview Crew after Phoebe's disappearance. Everyone goes into detective mode trying to find her, she struggles to remember anything she can about the fuzzy shadow figure that took her, and the Bayview PD is mishandling everything as usual.

This week, we continue our recap of Karen M. McManus’s One of Us Is Next, and things are really starting to spiral.
Nate and Bronwyn are fighting to create a safe space for women, but his roommates are terrible people and don't deserve nice things.
Jake’s back around town, and everyone’s on edge trying to avoid him. Addie finds a brief escape at the mall, but she has to spend the day with her mom, so is it really a win?
Meanwhile, a Fourth of July party turns dangerous after an Instagram post sends Phoebe reeling.
The only silver lining? The gang comes together for Cooper’s commercial viewing party. He’s a terrible actor, but don’t you dare say that out loud, or we are no longer friends.

Y'all this was a long one, but we had a lot of catching up to do!
We’re heading back to Cali one last time and let’s just say, it’s anything but a day at the beach.
In the first five chapters of One of Us Is Back, two very unexpected guests crash the party, a mysterious new game starts to take shape, and Phoebe and Knox are giving us major “it’s complicated” energy.
But it’s not all bad news our favorite couple is still going strong, and there’s even a baby on the way!
Join us as we dive into the tension, secrets, and small-town chaos only the Bayview Crew can deliver.

Have you heard the news? 📺 The Inheritance Games by our favorite genius Jennifer Lynn Barnes is officially being adapted for TV! 🎉 That’s right! Avery is coming to a screen near you. But while we wait for the onscreen chaos, we’ve got plenty of book drama to unpack,
We’re diving into the secrets of Hawthorne Island and finally learning what went down 20 years ago.
✨ Avery meets her grandmother… and let’s just say, this woman is NOT baking cookies and knitting scarves.
✨ Jackson’s big reveal is here, and honestly? It's better than we thought.
✨ Grayson shows us he’s more “call 911 and panic” than “hero in a crisis,” while Alisa stands on business.
✨ And Max’s mom makes her debut. We don’t always agree with her, but we are so glad she showed up.

Y'all, we are so sorry. Everything worked against us this week but here we are!
In this thrilling episode, we dive into Chapters 61–70 of The Hathorne Legacy and the drama does not disappoint.
Avery and Grayson blow off steam with some light historical theft, leading to a disastrous interview, a perfectly-timed elevator argument, and a threat from Alisa that we kind of want to see her follow through on.
Meanwhile, Libby and Nash are off in Costa Rica digging up secrets so juicy they apparently forgot how texting works. Back at Hawthorne House, Oren works to keep everyone in line, and we FINALLY learn the identity of Zara’s mysterious lover!
In the final few chapters two absentee fathers offer their excuses, and Avery finally uncovers several of her mothers secrets.

The search for Toby is heating up but first, Avery must kiss Jameson again...because priorities.
The kids cut a deal with Zara, who’d honestly rather be left alone with some tea and Twilight.
Xander is busy building droids for his future wife, while Nash and Libby take their adventures global. Grayson? Still chilling in the friend zone. And Eli proves why he should never be trusted as a babysitter.
But the real plot twist? Avery and Rebecca are finally mad!

We are officially in the second half of the book and so much is happening! Everyone has made it to True North where the paparazzi hit the slopes with Avery (look, I made a ski reference), relationships rekindle, and a photo inside of a photo reveals another paternal secret. Avery finally talks to Libby, and Grayson, and Jameson, but Oren continues to talk around Avery.
Max is awesome and right about everything.
Back at Hawthorne House Oren lets us look through the crown jewels and we discover Zara's secret library, but before we can poke through it she makes a very expensive request.

We Were Right About Things!!
A formal dinner in honor of Emily quickly becomes about everyone else, she would hate it. Max lives her best life on someone else’s tab, Skye goes on an anti-Libra rampage, and we finally get a word in with Ricky. Meanwhile, the folks at Heights Country Day learn why having a bartender at a Memorial Dinner is what some would call a very risky gamble, Libby’s feelings get crushed... we’re ready to throw hands.
After the party, Avery discovers True North, and (with help from a mysterious woman in khakis) we finally leave Dallas. Somewhere in the Rockies we discover that Tobias refused to buy a home without secret passages.
Back in Arizona, Grayson uncovers that both sides of his family tree are poisoned. (See what I did there?)
This episode has it all: dinner party disasters, astrological slander, mysterious women, secret tunnels, and emotional damage. Press play, you’re in for a ride.

We have no clue what’s going on and we love it.
Join us as we dive into The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes!
In this episode, we’re breaking down a wild set of chapters where Avery, Jameson, and Xander work separately-together (yes, it’s a thing) to unravel the mystery behind Toby’s disappearance, much to the dismay of the Laughlins, who are giving major villain vibes.
Alisa is judgy, Libby is a cinnamon roll, and Grayson continues his emotional self-sabotage journey.
Meanwhile, Thea and Rebecca are locked in a one-sided game of will-they-won’t-they, and honestly? We’d give anything for just one chapter from Oren’s point of view.
There’s a new game in play, and the stakes are only getting higher, so buckle up. The Hawthornes don’t slow down for anyone.

Ashton and Eli get their happily ever after, Maeve starts thinking about what’s next, and Knox faces his fears (and it totally pays off).
Over at Phoebe’s, Jared’s been telling a very different story about his and Emma’s “partnership. And when one little word changes everything, the Lawton sisters ban together. Speaking of this family... JUSTICE FOR MRS. LAWTON!!
Next week, we’re heading back to Dallas to check in on our favorite moody billionaire boys in The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Grab your copy and read along with us!
