Well… it ended up being a pretty harsh critique.
Oma’s take is genuinely interesting, but for me, there were quite a few moments that just didn’t click.
Mamoru Hosoda is an anime director who undeniably draws audiences, so I do hope he continues to put out films that are engaging and worth watching in the future.
That said, for fans of the film, please be aware that some parts of this episode may be uncomfortable to listen to.

Hey everyone, it’s your movie–rambling buddy Mako.
Today’s pick comes straight from a listener request: #SwissArmyMan.
And let me just say this upfront — this is absolutely not a date movie.
To the particular listener who chose this film for a date… I salute you. Truly. Bold move.
But jokes aside, for all its “nonsense comedy” vibes, the film actually digs into some pretty fundamental stuff about being human.
Philosophical questions, social questions — the kind of things you don’t expect to get hit with between fart jokes and magical corpses, but here we are.
And Daniel Radcliffe? His committed performance?
I mean… you might shed a tear.
(Or shed something. The movie makes you question a lot of bodily functions.)
Anyway, after watching it, I’ve decided I’m going to start farting proudly in public from now on.
Life’s too short to hold everything in, right?

気づけば少年時代は遠い昔の物語。
あの頃「ギズモがんばえー！」と舌ったらずに応援していた僕ら。
毛むくじゃらで可愛らしい歌うペットとグロテスクでモラルがかけらもない緑のバケモノのコントラストは、当時の僕らの心を掴んで離さなかった。
今見ると撮影技術の限界もあって見るに堪えない・・・・・・かと思いきやそうでもないのがすごいよね。
２のはちゃめちゃっぷりも一周回って許せちゃったりするもんよ。

Hey, it’s Mako, your friendly neighborhood movie rambling host.
My childhood feels like a lifetime ago now. Back then I was that kid lisping,
“Gizmo, you can do it!!” in front of the TV.
A fluffy, singing pet on one side and grotesque, zero-morals green monsters on the other.
That contrast had our little hearts in a chokehold.
You’d think the old-school effects would make it unwatchable today…
but surprise: it still totally works.
And Gremlins 2? It’s so over-the-top that it kind of loops back around to being lovable.

果たして天才のひしめくレコーディング現場ではどのような天才的なやり取りがなされていたのか。
いざみてみると思いの外人間ぽいっていうか。
僕たちは日頃どれだけ天才という生き物に線を引いて手の届かぬものにして、自分を納得させていたのかを理解する一本となっています。
人間だからこそ作れるものがある。
それはさておき、結局みんなシンディローパーパートのアドリブ好きだよね。

Hey everyone, this is Mako, your resident film-rambling podcaster.
This time, Ouma from #ポケ沼 joins me again—and we’re diving into a Netflix documentary.
And yeah、this one’s basically boomer bait.
We’re talking about that legendary, era-defining anthem… recorded in a single night, thrown together in just ten days from project launch to final mix.
A miracle track backed by a stack of miracle stories.
But here’s the surprise:
When you peek into the studio where all these “geniuses” gathered, the vibe is way more human than you’d expect.
Watching it, you start to realize something:
How often do we draw a line between “us” and “genius” just to protect our own self-esteem?
Maybe greatness isn’t as unreachable as we think.

#トキシックマスキュリニティ とか言われちゃう時代だけれども、確かに男だけで醸成されるあの#ホモソーシャル な空間の居心地の良さってのは確かにあって・・・
まあそんなわけで2020年代を今生きる我々が2009年ごろの男たちの苦悩や不安をお察しする１時間となりました。

This time, we’re diving into a listener request — The Hangover series.
Kicking off in 2009, this all-time favorite ridiculous comedy still hits hard.
It’s hilarious, no doubt, but… trying to analyze it? Yeah, that’s a whole different kind of hangover.
Still, we managed to shape a conversation out of it.
In an age where words like toxic masculinity dominate the discourse, it’s interesting to revisit that male-bonding energy — that warm, chaotic comfort of the homosocial.
So, in a way, this episode turned into a reflection on how we — living in the 2020s — can look back and empathize with the anxieties and insecurities of men in 2009.
Stick around; the hangover might be gone, but the conversation’s just getting started.

今回はハロウィン特別企画ということで、あのいかれた家族です。
当時#アダムスファミリー のウェンズデーに心撃ち抜かれた少年は私たちだけではないはず。
２時間があっという間に感じるブラックユーモア溢れるコメディですが、今改めてみてみると社会的なメッセージを含む傑作だったことが見えてきます。
笑えるだけがコメディじゃない。
笑いの先に社会をすかしみて、少しウィットのある余韻を残すのが良質なコメディかもしれない。
そんなことを考えさせられるハロウィンの夜でした。
まあ皆さんが聞く時にはもうハロウィン終わってるんですけどね。

Let’s be honest — we weren’t the only ones who fell hopelessly in love with Wednesday back in the day.
It’s a pitch-black comedy full of morbid wit and charm, the kind that makes two hours fly by in a blink.
But rewatching it now, you start to notice something deeper:
behind the laughs, there’s a surprisingly sharp social message.
Comedy isn’t just about making people laugh — it’s about holding up a mirror to society and leaving that faint aftertaste of irony.
That, I think, is what makes good comedy.
Anyway… by the time you’re listening to this, Halloween’s probably long over.

今回は #ポケ沼 よりオーマを迎えての収録です。
今回はショーンオブザデッド。
誰でもピンとくると思いますがドーンオブザデッドをもじったタイトルのゾンビ映画パロディです。
・・・ホラー映画・・・・・・ではないですね。
コメディ映画でありながらシリアス展開も楽しめる本作。
笑い飛ばして気持ちよく終わってしまうのも良いですが、明確なメッセージが感じられて・・・
というよりメッセージが明確すぎて一般論に終始してしまった感がありました。
芸術が自由なら解釈も自由なわけで。
もう少し独自の解釈でもなんでも見つけられればよかったなと反省。
話は変わるけど商業施設の不審者対応用のさすまた、江戸時代のやつに戻した方が強いと思うんだけどな。

This time I’m joined by Orma from #ポケ沼 to dive into Shaun of the Dead.
As you can probably guess, the title riffs on Dawn of the Dead—but let’s be real, this isn’t exactly a horror flick. It’s a parody zombie comedy that still manages to slip in some surprisingly serious turns.
Sure, you can just laugh it off and enjoy the ride, but the film’s message comes through almost too clearly—so much so that our talk ended up circling around pretty general themes. Art is free, which means interpretations should be free too. Looking back, I kinda wish I had dug up a more off-beat take of my own.
Oh, and totally off topic—but you know those modern sasumata poles malls keep for intruder defense? Honestly, I think the Edo-period versions were way more effective… just saying.

But with famous films like this, there’s always that strange sense of intimidation — that feeling of how do I even begin to talk about something so mythic?
To explore its essence is, in a way, to question how far interpretation itself can go in art.

邦題は#サプライズ。
ホラー映画です。
・・・ホラー映画ですか？
というわけで今回はジャンルシフトものを一本見てみました。
面白い映画なことは確かなのですが、これってありなのかしら？
かなりライトにお話ししていますが、創作物におけるいわゆるハズしみたいなものをどこまで許容するのか、みたいな話になりました。
芸術は自由ですが、最終的に評価を下すのは大衆なわけで、どこに折り合いをつけるのかというのもまたその作品を表現した者の作家性なのでしょう。
小難しく考えずに意外性を楽しむくらいの姿勢で見るのが最高ですね。

Hey everyone, it’s Mako, your movie talk podcast host.
This time I’m joined by Orma from #ポケ沼, and we dove into the film You’re Next (released in Japan as Surprise).
So… is this really a horror movie? Well, that’s the fun of it.
We’re talking about genre-shift films—movies that pull the rug out from under you. It’s definitely entertaining, but is it fair play?
We kept it pretty light, but the conversation ended up circling around that bigger question: how much “bait-and-switch” is acceptable in storytelling? Art is free, sure—but at the end of the day, it’s the audience that passes judgment. That balance point between surprise and betrayal is where a creator’s personality shines through.
At the end of the day, maybe it’s best not to overthink it and just enjoy the unexpected. That’s when these movies hit the hardest.
