REMEMBERING JELLYBEAN JOHNSON (Morris Day and The Time drummer)
1956 - 2025
with Prologue by Zapp Band drummer LESTER TROUTMAN, SR. and RICK FLYNN
This is a very special edition of the podcast RICK FLYNN PRESENTS as we celebrate the homegoing of one of the "Good Guys in Show Business," to say the very least,
JELLYBEAN JOHNSON.
As the drummer for THE TIME, Johnson worked alongside famed producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and recorded with and/or produced many notable artists including Alexander O'Neal, Cherrelle, New Edition, and Janet Jackson, with whom he had the 1990 No. 1 single, "Black Cat".
Jellybean appeared in the PRINCE movies “Purple Rain” and Graffiti Bridge"
Quote From Cincinnati DJ/Emcee RICK FLYNN on 11/25/2025:
“I first met Jellybean Johnson in Cincinnati, Ohio during the PRINCE “Controversy Tour” in which I was an emcee. This tour featured the headliner PRINCE and, in the middle slot, was a Greater Cincinnati area band called “ZAPP FEATURING ROGER” and the then, largely unknown local Minneapolis band, known as MORRIS DAY and THE TIME which featured Jellybean Johnson on the drums. I was instantly impressed by the raw talent and showmanship of, not only Jellybean, but of the whole organization. This man was someone I was fortunate to have met and I have never forgotten the experience ever! The resulting popularity and huge success of THE TIME band to follow did not surprise me at all. They deserved it and I will forever miss “Bean” but I will never, ever forget the times I spent with him.”
Thank-you MARTY for all you have done and my God bless you both!
Thank-you to my brother and ZAPP BAND drummer LESTER TROUTMAN, SR. for your gracious contribution to this memorial show. i hope you all enjoy it as we proudly remember and pay tribute to what I call "One of the Good Guys in Show Business"
JELLYBEAN JOHNSON!
RICK FLYNN PRESENTS: The worldwide podcast welcomes author ANNE HAND with her brand-new book published by Amsterdam Press on October 20, 2025, which is also the exact date of the recording of this worldwide podcast.
In this captivating memoir, the author embarks on a deeply personal journey to uncover her family's hidden history during the Holocaust while pursuing Austrian citizenship. As Austria opens the door to reparation citizenship for descendants of those victimized by the Nazi and Austrofascist regimes, Anne digs through fragments of family stories and documents to trace her Austrian and Czechoslovakian roots. Through her search, she pieces together the story her ancestors withheld from their children after World War II, while reflecting on identity, migration, and heritage.
Navigating the bureaucratic process of gaining citizenship, this journey becomes much more than just a legal pursuit. It transforms into a reflection on memory, loss, and resilience, culminating in the celebration of legacies both long buried and still cherished. Along the way, she confronts the silences and gaps in her family's past, grappling with the weight of history and its impact on future generations. This story is a heartfelt meditation on the intersection of personal and shared history, and a joyful tribute to the power of remembering and belonging.
This memoir stands out as a unique and contemporary story, offering a fresh perspective on historical reparations and the ongoing quest for identity in a rapidly changing world. By blending personal narrative with a modern-day journey through citizenship laws and collective memory, it highlights the enduring influence of history on modern life. It is a timely, thoughtful exploration of what it means to reclaim a lost heritage and gain a new place in today's world.

We are rolling out the red carpet once again for a distinguished professor and author, this time from the University of Central Florida, and welcoming him to the Rick Flynn Presents worldwide podcast.
The Paradox of Passion: How Rewards Covertly Control Motivation challenges conventional wisdom about motivation. It reveals why legacy research findings are often misinterpreted and overgeneralized, leading to unrealistic beliefs about the self and others that foster ineffective strategy use impeding optimal learning and performance. The book provides cross-disciplinary evidence emphasizing the essential role of rewards as a biological and behavioral driver of motivation. It challenges the clichéd idea of intrinsic motivation, pointing out the flaws in pursuing passion and purpose without considering how the brain regulates motivation through personalized rewards. Evidence reveals that a singular focus on passion is an unattainable ideal, akin to a mythical "motivation unicorn." Instead of hopes and dreams, the book offers practical insights and research-based strategies for enhancing learning and performance by effectively leveraging how the brain uses innate reward pathways to get what we want and sometimes obtain what we need. This book is availableright now, wherever books are sold, and it was a delight to have Dr. Bobby Hoffman on our show indeed!

Back by popular demand and making his second visit to the Rick Flynn Presents worldwide podcast is author and Theoretical Linguist SAMUEL JAY KEYSER in promotion of his new book "Play It Again, Sam: Repetition in the Arts." In the book Play It Again, Sam Samuel Jay Keyser explores in detail the way repetition works in poetry, music, and painting. He argues, for example, that the same cognitive function underlies both how poets write rhyme in metrical verse and the way songwriters like Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn (“Satin Doll”) and Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart (“My Funny Valentine”) construct their iconic melodies. Furthermore, the repetition found in these tunes can also be found in such classical compositions as Mozart's Rondo alla Turca and his German Dances, as well as in galant music in general.
