Salaam Mymoena!
On this lovely Sunday @marroushti welcomes @mymoena on the show to share her most memorable music from growing up in South Africa! (originally aired 24/8/25)“Growing up on the Cape Flats during apartheid, maintaining connection to home after political exile, music has been the threads that tethered my identity. Immigrant experience in Aotearoa strengthened my commitment to keep the home song stories embedded to Bo Kaap, and the Cape Flats. The tracks I selected are informed by my journey with being a teenager back home and the memories that shaped what growing up as an adult physically separated, but music cemented the identity.Brenda Fassie’s Weekend Special released in 1983 still maintains the core memory for the house I grew up in on the Cape Flats, my Mum brought joy to life through dance in our home. Which was a stark juxtaposition to the deeply Muslim religious community I was raised in. The essence of this track reminds me of my Mum. Brenda as an artist was an idol who grew up on the township of Langa in the Cape Flats.”We can’t wait to share with you Mymoena’s track list and learn more about South Africa’s rich music
