ਜਦ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਪਿੰਡ ਛੁੱਟੀ ਆਏ ਸਨ, ਤਦ ਜ਼ਿਮੀਂਦਾਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਪਿੰਡ ਬਡਰੁੱਖੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਇੱਕ ਦੋ ਵਾਰੀ ਚੀਮੇਂ ਆਇਆ। ਏਸ ਨੇ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਬੜਾ ਸੁਡੋਲ, ਸੁੰਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਨਹਾਰ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਪੁੱਤਰੀ ਮਹਾਂ ਕੌਰ ਲਈ ਯੋਗ ਵਰ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਪਰ ਸਾਕਾਂ-ਸੰਬੰਧੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ-ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕੱਤਕ ਦਾ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਗਿਆ। ਹੁਣ ਸੰਤ ਕੋਹਾਟ ਪਲਟਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਪਸ ਜਾ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਸਨ।

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਕਾਟਿ ਕਾਟਿ ਸਭੁ ਅਰਪੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਗਨੀ ਆਪੁ ਜਲਾਈ ॥੪॥
ਪਖਾ ਫੇਰੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਢੋਵਾ ਜੋ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਸੋ ਖਾਈ ॥੫॥
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗਰੀਬੁ ਢਹਿ ਪਇਆ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੬॥ (੭੫੭)
ਫੌਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਰਤੀ
ਹੁਣ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਜ ਲਈ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਸੀ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਫਿਕਰ ਕਰੋ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਜੁਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਮੋਹ-ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲੋ। ਮਾਤਾ ਭੋਲੀ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਅਤਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਲ ਬੜਾ ਹੀ ਡੂੰਘਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਵੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਨਿੱਕੀ ਉਮਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ।

ਘਰ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਾਜ ਕਰਨਾ
ਸੰਮਤ ੧੯੩੯ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮੀ (ਸੰਨ ੧੮੮੨ ਈਸਵੀ), ਸੌਲ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਖੇਤੀ-ਬਾੜੀ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ। ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਆਪ ਜਦ ਹਲ਼ ਵਾਹ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ, ਤਾਂ ਦੋ ਚੋਬਰ ’ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਬੁੱਢਾ (ਸੱਤਰ-ਪਚੱਤਰ ਸਾਲ ਦਾ) ਮਿਲੇ। ਬੁੱਢਾ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਚਿਹਨ-ਚੱਕਰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਠਹਿਰ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਚਿਹਰੇ ਵੱਲ ਵੇਖਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ। ਚੋਬਰ ਨੇ ਅਵਾਜ਼ ਦਿੱਤੀ, “ਬੁੱਢਿਆ ਛੇਤੀ ਆ, ਆਪਾਂ ਦੂਰ ਜਾਣਾ ਏ।” ਬੁੱਢੇ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਲੈਣ ਦਿਓ। ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਕਲਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਹੈ।”

ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਵੰਡ ਕੇ ਛਕਣ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਸੀ। ਇੱਕ ਅਦੁੱਤੀ ਖੇਡ ਇਸ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਰਤੀ ਕਿ ਜਦ ਬੇਬੇ ਜੀ (ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਦੀ ਵੱਡੀ ਭੈਣ ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ) ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਸੀ, ਮਾਤਾ ਭੋਲੀ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਇੱਕ ਭੜੋਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁੜ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਜਦ ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਭੜੋਲੀ ਦਾ ਚਾਪੜ ਚੁੱਕਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਕੀ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਭੜੋਲੀ ਕੁਝ ਖਾਲ਼ੀ ਹੈ। ਦਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਸਮਝ ਆਈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਅਤਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਿੱਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁੜ ਵੰਡ ਆਇਆ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।

ਡੰਗਰ ਚਾਰਨੇ
ਕੁਝ ਚਿਰ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਡੰਗਰ ਚਾਰਨ ’ਤੇ ਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਜਦ ਡੰਗਰ ਬਾਹਰ ਲਿਜਾਂਦੇ ਚੁੰਨੀ ਦੇ ਪੱਲੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੱਕਦੇ, ਸੋਟੀ ਕਦੀ ਵੀ ਨਾ ਮਾਰਦੇ। ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਹੋਰ ਮੁੰਡੇ ਵੀ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਨਾਲ ਡੰਗਰ ਰਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਕਰਨ। ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਬਾਲਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਲ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਰੁੱਖ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਬੈਠ ਜਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਣ ’ਤੇ ਡੰਗਰ ਖੁੱਲੇ੍ਹ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਣ। ਜਦ ਡੰਗਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਖੇਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈਣ ਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਦੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਵਾਰੀ-ਵਾਰੀ ਮੋੜ ਲਿਆ ਕਰਨ। ਦੁਪਹਿਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਡੰਗਰ ਰੱਜ ਕੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਦਰਖਤਾਂ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਆ ਜਾਇਆ ਕਰਨ।

ਪੜ੍ਹਨੇ ਪੈਣਾ
ਜਦ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਸੱਤ ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਤਾਂ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਆਖਣ ਲੱਗੇ ਕਿ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਾਖ਼ਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਓ। ਬਾਲਕ-ਰੂਪ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਬੜੇ ਹੀ ਅਦਬ ਨਾਲ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ! ਅਸੀਂ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਨੀ, ਅਸੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਪਾੜ੍ਹਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਂਗੇ।’ ਇਹ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਭਾਈ ਰਾਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਦੇ ਡੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਪਾਸ ਪੜ੍ਹਨੇ ਪਾਇਆ।

ਬਾਲ ਲੀਲ੍ਹਾ
ਜਦ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਰਿੜ੍ਹਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ, ਕਈ ਵਾਰੀ ਕੁੱਛਾਂ, ਕੂੱਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੁਕ ਕੇ ਬੈਠ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਤੇ ਭੋਲੀ ਜੀ ਢੂੰਡ-ਢੂੰਡ ਕੇ ਫਾਵੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ। ਜਦ ਢਾਈ ਵਰਿ੍ਹਆਂ ਦੇ ਹੋਏ, ਤਾਂ ਬੜੀਆਂ ਮਿੱਠੀਆਂ-ਮਿੱਠੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੱਡੀ ਭੈਣ ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਨਾਲ ਬੜਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿਨ ਭੈਣ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਚੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ। ਜਦ ਪੰਜ ਛੇ ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਤਾਂ ਬਾਲਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਖੇਡਣ ਲੱਗੇ। ਜਿਹੜਾ ਬਾਲਕ ਘਰ ਆਵੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ, “ਆ ਭਈ ਭਗਤਾ! ਆ ਭਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀਆਂ!” ਖੇਡਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੜੇ ਮਿੱਠੇ ਵਚਨ ਵਰਤਦੇ। ਕਈ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਲੇ-ਦੁਆਲੇ ਬਿਠਾ ਲਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਤੇ ਲੀਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਮਾਲਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਫੇਰਨ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਰਾਵਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਣ।
