Jake and Max Newport, Founders of Finnmark Sauna, welcome Stig Arild Pettersen, who is the Secretary General of the Norwegian Sauna Association (Norges Badstulaug), where he has been instrumental in building and strengthening Norway's sauna movement since taking on the role in 2023. A lifelong sauna enthusiast who lives on a small farm in Isfjorden in Møre og Romsdal, Stig oversees the day-to-day operations of the national organisation and serves as the primary liaison with members across Norway. Under his leadership, the Norwegian Sauna Association has experienced remarkable growth, expanding to include more than 120 sauna operators and several hundred private individuals throughout the country.
In his role, Stig is dedicated to promoting Norwegian sauna culture both domestically and internationally, working to fulfil the association's mission of creating an inclusive and accessible sauna culture for all. His work focuses on three key areas: fostering a generous and open sauna environment where everyone feels welcome regardless of background, promoting research and awareness of sauna's significant health benefits, and ensuring that saunas are genuinely accessible to all Norwegians irrespective of financial means or physical ability. Welcome to episode 10 of the Sauna Twins Podcast! In this wide-ranging conversation we are joined by a special guest all the way from Australia, Nikita Miltiadou from Blue Mountains Sauna. Nikita is approaching the end of an exciting expedition to experience as many different types of saunas across Europe as possible, with the goal of finding out how quirky, authentic and modernised sauna can be. Nikita is the co-founder of Blue Mountains Sauna in Leura, a town in New South Wales about 1.5 hours drive from Sydney.
Nikita shares the story behind Blue Mountains Sauna and their vision, attributing credit to his partner Inga Sommerfeld, who is half Russian, half German. Having grown up accustomed to the sauna culture, she was surprised at how hard it was to find a proper one in Australia. The idea for creating a Finnish-style public sauna came from her yearning for a traditional, European sauna experience. Blue Mountains Sauna was founded in 2022 and together with the team, they are on a mission to “spread the good heat.”
Nikita made a detour at Finnmark towards the end of his sauna pilgrimage to chat about the places he’s visited, most memorable “löylys,” how a public Finnish sauna found its way to the Australian mountains, sauna hats, heating methods, how sauna culture has spread across the world and is finding its footing in different countries, the global influx towards public saunas post COVID-19 and much more.
