Georgia Schools Get Opioid Reversal Kits
Georgias New Opioid Overdose Reversal Kits in Schools: A Lifesaving InitiativeGeorgia is making significant strides in combating the opioid crisis in schools by implementing new legislation. By the end of the next school year, every public school in the state will have an opioid overdose reversal kit stocked with Narcan. This initiative comes as a response to the alarming increase in fentanyl overdoses among teens, with a nearly three hundred percent spike and drug overdoses becoming the third leading cause of death for adolescents by 2022.The push for these kits is driven by heartbreaking losses, such as the fifteen-year-old Dunwoody High School student who died from an overdose in July 2024. Another student at the same school was saved by Narcan, inspiring a fellow teen to advocate for kits in every school.Narcan, or naloxone, is a fast-acting medication that can reverse overdoses by restoring breathing within minutes until help arrives. The kits will be available without a prescription, and schools will receive training for staff on how to use them. If a kit is used, schools can scan a QR code for an automatic replacement. This effort, funded by Georgias Opioid Abatement Trust from settlement money, aims to ensure that no child loses out on help due to their school. Its a crucial step towards safer communities for kids everywhere.

Democratic Governor Candidates Debate in Georgia
Seven Democratic candidates for Georgia governor, including former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and businessman Olu Brown, took the stage in Savannah for the first major policy forum of the election year. With Republican Governor Brian Kemp leaving office in 2026, Democrats see an opportunity to grab the powerful position, especially as economic troubles mount. The candidates, who included former Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan and state Representative Derrick Jackson, sounded strikingly similar, vowing to expand Medicaid, grow affordable housing funds, and make technical training and community college free for all adults. The forum, which drew about 1,000 attendees, launched the Savannah Debate Series, with a Republican version planned for spring and a head-to-head general election debate later. Candidates must qualify by March 6th, ahead of May 19th primaries that could reshape the race.
