Advent Day 21 - Woodinville Port Barrels Cask Finish Straight Bourbon WhiskeyA great craft Bourbon made even better with a Port wood finish for a delectable dram.The story of Woodinville Whiskey Co. starts in 2010 with two best friends — founders Orlin Sorensen and Brett Carlile. They set out to create a great craft Whiskey, and these two gentlemen started things off right by enlisting the help of industry icon David Pickerell — the former master distiller at Maker’s Mark. So although their business is young, they’ve already won both Craft Whiskey of the Year and Craft Rye Whiskey of the Year for two years running from the American Distilling Institute.Sometimes you CAN improve on a good thing.The team at Woodinville starts with the signature, award-winning Straight Bourbon. The mash bill is a tradition corn/rye/barley mix, but the barrels make it unique. The wood is slowly air-dried for eighteen months before being coopered into barrels and slow-roasted to a dark char. The Bourbon is aged in those casks in the extreme weather of central Washington for five years. That’s ALL good stuff. But then they finish it in Ruby Port pipes for an additional six months, making it simply a delectable tribute to wood. As you can imagine, this is limited quantity stuff. Advent Day 17 - New Riff 6 Year Old Malted RyeMade entirely from malted rye, this is a subtle sipper.Ken Lewis has been selling Spirits for more than thirty years. He owned and ran one of the most successful retail stores in the country — The Party Source in Bellevue, Kentucky. He sold the company to his employees in 2014 and used the funds to launch New Riff Distillery with co-founder Jay Erisman in Newport that same year — just across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio. As head distiller Brian Sprance was distilling Spirits and laying down casks for aging, they sourced Spirits from MGP in Indiana and sold them under the O.K.I. band (now retired). They are now releasing their own complete line of house-crafted Spirits and are an official stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.New Riff Malted Rye 6 Years Old is a bonded Whiskey that’s made entirely from malted rye. Now, that’s not unseen but it is rare. The result is much more subtle than unmalted rye and begins with a light and sweet nose that evolves into a fruity and malty palate with apple, fresh berries, and brown sugar.
