Host Jackie Tantillo is proud to announce that "Should Have Listened To My Mother " has won a 2024 People's Choice Podcast Award for best podcast in the Society and Culture Category. SHLTMM is also a 2024 Nominee in two additional categories including, "Best Female" Hosted Podcast & "Best Podcast" in the Kids and Family category.
SHLTMM is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the role they play/played in ones life. The mother/son, mother/daughter bond is unique for each of us and it is like no other. "You'll be amazed at human nature and how we can overcome our obstacles, says the podcast host. Our mother/son--mother/daughter relationship is such an integral part of who we are. What we choose to do with it, is up to us, not our mother.
"Did your mom influence you by her actions or words or both? Are you who you are today because of or in spite of, your mother? What would you say to your mother if you could speak with her again today?
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from others about who and/or what shaped their life. My guests, some of which share similar backgrounds, interestingly enough, had completely different outcomes in their future. Why is that?
I hope you enjoy these timeless oral history recordings of the role mothers and maternal figures have played throughout society. The impact these women have on our lives is insurmountable. What the women that preceded us overcame has undeniably given us liberties and knowledge enabling us to have the bright future that we have. They opened so many doors regardless if they were in the eye of the nation or merely in the hearts of their children, and they should be given a voice. Yes hindsight is 20/20, but by sharing these stories now, we can help the next generations of mothers and give them the tools they need to stay healthy, balanced and strong for the betterment of their children and themselves.

Such a wonderful opportunity for me to have a conversation with Dr. Kamille Richardson. You're about to hear many telling stories about Kamille and her mother Jackie. Jackie just got down to business when finally a doctor agreed with her assessment that her daughter was born blind. Other medical professionals beat around the bush suggesting Kamille perhaps had lazy eyes, but in fact her mother knew almost immediately after she was born, that her daughter was blind. Jackie started the "Center For the Blind" in North Carolina because not only was there no school system that could accommodate her daughter, but there were non educational programs for any visually impaired students in the area. That's just one of the many wonders of Jackie and just one of the many wonderful stories my guest shares of her "no-nonsense" mother.
I’M EXCITED TO INTRODUCE THIS WEEK’S GUEST. SHE’S A MOM, FORMER “IT” CONSULTANT, SHE REFERS TO HERSELF AS A “TRAVEL JOURNALIST/TRAVEL VLOGGER.” MY GUEST IS A COMMERCIAL HELICOPTER PILOT AND TEACHES AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY-A CONTINUING STUDIES COURSE TITLED “NAVIGATING MIDLIFE FOR WOMEN.”

KRISTY, MY GUEST'S MOTHER WAS PREGNANT AT 19 YEARS OLD AND A MOTHER OF TWINS AT 20 YEARS OLD. TERRI EXPLAINS HOW HER MOTHER'S LIFE WAS COMPLETELY INTERRUPTED AS A YOUNG AGE. KRISTY WAS KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL BECAUSE SHE WAS PREGNANT. ALL OF THESE ISSUES AND MORE, PLAYED A ROLE IN WHO KRISTY IS TODAY AND WHO TERRI, HER DAUGHTER IS TODAY.
Karina Vartanian, Soprana singler, completed her BA degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City in 2025. She and her mother, Norma shared conversations about their Armenian heritage and Karina's experience growing up having been a high risk preemie baby. Just wait till you hear all about her experiences and struggles that Karina overcame as a young child and even today. Norma had to watch her daughter struggle and often fall, but she wanted Karina to fully understand that in life you have to be able to pick yourself up and keep going.
Originally from Long Island, New York, Karina and Norma are very close and have been through so much together. Yet they're able to look back at some of the hard times and laugh in amazement at both of their accomplishments. Norma is a private music teacher and flutist.
This was a very special conversation. I'm so glad that both Melissa and her mother, Christina/Tina were able to make this happen.
To me this "mother-daughter" relationship is an example of the "arc" of a relationship. All that encompasses love-good and bad. The challenges that life throws at us and the bravery it takes to right the wrongs.
Dr. Bird is a nationally recognized lay preacher, author, life coach, social worker and mother. Her father was Native American. She is a descendant of the Shivwits Band of Paiutes, a sovereign, federally recognized Native American Tribe of Southwest Utah.
Melissa has said that she had trouble fitting in as a child. Tragically, her dad took his life when she was six. My guest remembers that her life was chaotic and often violent and yet mom loved me the best she could with her shattered heart.
Over the decades, these two women have been able to come to understand one another better, forgive on another, listen to one another, heal and come to terms with the trauma of what happened to both of them, so many years ago.

She completed her postdoctoral studies from Harvard University and is the author of many highly acclaimed and endorsed books. Here is the link to Marni's website https://godcametomygaragesale.com/. Marni says she reached out to SHLTMM to share stories about the positive influence her late mother had on her.
Writer, photographer and musician Jennifer Finch is my guest this week on SHLTMM. We had a wonderful conversation about her life that is full of ups and downs and finding family and love in all kinds of places and people. Jennifer's adoptive mother, Sandy, had an adventurous life when she was younger and then things seemed to fall apart for her. Jennifer has been sober for decades and loves being able to express herself in her own way.
Truly interesting conversation this week with Physician and author, Dr. Greg Hammer. Greg shared stories of his maternal grandmother, Kay. Kay's grandparents immigrated to the United States from Germany. Kay's mother and Kay were both born in the US.
Greg says his grandmother was an aristocrat. She and Greg's grandfather started collecting art at a young age and the walls of their home, in the suburbs of Chicago, were covered in large canvases of work by Picasso, Manet, Monet, Calder, Modigliani and more. Greg would spend time with his grandmother going to museums in the Chicago area where he grew up. Grateful for all his memories of his grandmother and her sharing her passion for art, Greg claims to be an art collector now as well.
US Navy Veteran and author Rob Greene is joining SHLTMM from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where he currently lives. He is the author of the book "Unfiltered Wisdom," a complete guide to PTSD recovery through Mindfullness. Rob is offering FREE copies of his book on his website-https://unfiltered-wisdom.com/the-book/. At the time of publishing this episode, Rob had gotten a deal through Amazon. This link will work for 90 days. https://a.co/d/9knHSno. We had an open conversation not only pertaining to his PTSD but about both his biological mother Marie who died in her mid thirties when Rob was only four, and his Stepmother, Debra, who survived a troubled past yet tried very hard to help out in a complicated situation.
So grateful to Rob for joining us and the work he put into finding himself and healing his wounds of his past. The few memories he has of his biological mom are significant especially after he shared that he had recently completed his first book about his journey and his ties to his biological mom.
My guest this episode is Michael (Mike) Schloff from Maplewood, New Jersey. Mike is the founder of “TheMaplewoodShop,” which is a portable woodworking system or “shop” class in a box. Mike mother, Linda has always been influential in his life. She was right by his side every step of the way guiding him through the personal, social and educational challenges.
Today, TheMaplewoodshop is in hundreds of charter and public Schools, used with homeschoolers, camps and more.
With the help of both his mom and dad, Mike was able to figure out activities/hobbies and “work arounds” to help him with his "Willfullness Disorder," as a professional diagnosis indicated back in the 1970's. Apparently, this was something that was a precursor to ADHD.
Early on, Mike's parents had discovered that their son had a wonderful mechanical aptitude. And today, decades later, that passion has turned into TheMaplewoodShop, helping many students find their new strengths and interests.
This week on SHLTMM, hear stories of Robert (Bob) Boog and his mother Joan. My guest's mom and dad opened a real estate business in California in 1978 and Robert still runs the business today. His mom affectionately referred to him as a SOB (son of a realtor). As Robert says, "my mom was more of the readers are leaders, be creative, stay positive and say yes to adventure type."
Hope you enjoy this episode.

There's so many wonderful aspects of this conversation. I want to thank Josh O'Neill, who is a Certified Green Project Manager, sustainability advocate and the Founder and Project Lead of "The Litter Club Network" for joining me on SHLTMM. It's not every day that I get to speak with someone in Phuket, Thailand, so this was enjoyable for many reasons. You'll get to know more about Josh's mother, Pattie, who was of Irish descent, one of eleven children and born and raised in New Zealand. My guest, Josh, was the youngest of the family and nine years younger than his sister. He's been a very successful project manager for many years and now he's living by the sea and helping clean up the beaches of Phuket and teaching others how precious the sea is and that it needs to be protected and kept litter free.
I'm fortunate to speak with guests each week who are open to discussing their relationship with their mother/female role model. This week my guests is Parita Puttakkan. Parita is a certified professional "mind set" and confidence coach. She also is the founder of "Awarify Coaching." Mina, her mother immigrated to the United States from India. An arranged marriage brought Parita's parents together when they were in their teens. We all know too well the challenges of moving to a foreign country, not speaking the language, and missing your own family back home. In this interview, we'll hear a number of stories where Mina, Parita's mother, has really been a remarkable woman, mother and role model.
My guest, Andy Semotiuk, pronounced, Sem-a-chuck, is a US/Canadian Immigration Attorney now living in Toronto, Canada. He had lived and practiced Immigration Law here in the United states for more than ten years before returning to Canada. This is the story of his mother, Solomea, who was fiercely independent, didn't want anyone to take pity on her and she'd say "I can deal with whatever life has to give me." And that's exactly what she did.
Corporate Lawyer to Foodie! It's such a pleasure to introduce this week's guest. Rachel Simons is Co-Founder and CEO of Seed + Mill, located at Chelsea Market in New York City. Seed + Mill, is a women-owned business, selling a variety of products made from Ethiopian Organic sesame seeds. Rachel joins me for this episode to share stories of her mother, Jane and her grandmother, Annika. She's recently published a cookbook titled "Sesame," which she dedicated to her mother, Jane as well as her grandparents. Rachel inscribed the book saying, "thank you for teaching me to plant seeds, but also empowering me to hitch a ride with the wind, scattering those seeds to far and distant places."
This week, we're taking a look back at S3E22. My guest is Grace De Angeli which translates to The Angels of Grace. She joined me via Zoom from Australia to share her stories of her life and how she remains optimistic. Please be advised that some of the content of this episode may be disturbing but if anyone can turn a series of events of their life around, it's my guest, Grace. She is the host of the podcast "Breast Cancer Heroes Journey."
This episode, a wonderful conversation with French singer-songwriter, Plume. He was immediately open to speaking with SHLTMM. Plume was excited to share his stories of all the significant women in his life, including his mother, Valerie, his grandmother, Paule as well as his girlfriend, Elsa.
