Skinny Thoughts on Christ's Peace
Being Breathed Upon By God
To date, this is my most popular sermon, preached 6 times for a variety of occasions. It contains excerpts of The Gift that Keeps on Giving the first preaching was in 2006 For the People of Color Awards in the Gary IN Diocese. the second preaching was in 2008 on the 2nd Sunday of Easter 10 years later I used an edited version for the 2018 Young Adult Summit hosted by the NCYAMA - National Catholic Young Adult Ministry Association in February of 2014 I preached a version for Fr. Richard Fragomeni’s installation to Full Professor at Catholic Theological Union Chicagothe final time was May 2021 for Partnered in Mission and included this introduction: I am anchoring this talk in the context of me, an African-American Roman Catholic woman, born in the United States in 1962. It is my hope that you enter in and find discomfort, challenge, joy, community, love, authentic witness, yourself. I find it interesting that this is the 4th sermon to use John 20:19-23 After you listen, send me a note telling me why you think this sermon was popular

Skinny Thoughts on Christ's Peace
You Have Been Asked to Go
this sermon was first preached some where in 2004. I have nothing by the year listed. Based on the scripture text, I will say that it was a Pentecost sermon What is interesting is that this is the 3rd sermon that uses the same scripture text. Well in this case we include a few more verses. I wonder why I never noticed this before? The 2nd time it was preached at Faith Community MB Church June 2014

Peace Be With You
This sermon has been preached twice. the first time was Pentecost 2008 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Chicago, now Our Lady of Africa  the 2nd time was June 2017 at Faith Community MB Church this sermon has not changed over the years.  an interesting fact is that this is the same scripture text as the previous episode, and yet I went into an entirely different direction. See if you notice. it won’t be Pentecost when you hear this sermon, but Jesus will still speak peace over you

The Gift That Keeps On Giving
This sermon has been preached only once before on Pentecost in 2005 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Chicago, now Our Lady of Africa this is a short sermon. you will find that my early sermons were short. written to fit into a Catholic liturgy that was a little over an hour. Is there still a message?  in the next episode you will hear another Pentecost sermon preached 3 years later on the same text

Journey to God Through the Needy
This sermon was preached on the Feast of Christ the King in 2005. The date tells me I preached it at Holy Angels in Chicago My footnote tells me it contains excerpts of “Let Me Be a Sheep!” preached at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. I can’t find that version, but it would have been preached between 1996 and 1999.

Praying Past Evil
This sermon was first preached on the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time in 2007. I preached it again at Faith Community MB Church in September 2015. This was a difficult sermon in that I ask people to pray differently. Listen and tell me if you find it difficult as well.

No Longer Playing Dress Up: It’s Live Action
I first preached this sermon under the title, Playing Dress Up in 2006 at Holy Angels on the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. I revised it 7 March 2017, but I don’t know where I preached it. Hmmm. I wonder if it was for Faith Community MB Church? I re-titled the sermon 18 November 2020 and preached it for the organization, the Center for FaithJustice now called GoodFaith.

Becoming Your True Self / Giving Your All
This sermon has two titles: “Becoming Your True Self” and “Giving Your All”. I don’t recall why?  Preached in 2006 at Holy Angels on the 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time, I preached it again 10 years later in April at Faith Community MB Church.  It has been enlightening to journey back through these sermons, re-discovering the time spent in the pulpit.

Tear the Roof Off
The first time I preached this sermon in October 2011 at Faith Community MB Church, I played the beginning of Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker) by Parliament before reading the scripture. What do you think happened? I preached this sermon again in April 2016 on the 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time. I played the same song then too.

God is Calling: Too Distracted to Listen
I have found that this sermon was preached 4 times. The first time was January 2006, you got it, the 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. I preached it again at the 2009 Harambee. The Augustus Tolton Pastoral Ministry Program at Catholic Theological Union Chicago, hosts an annual fundraiser for the scholarship program, entitled Harambee. That program was significant in my formation. Check it out. The 3rd preaching was for the RCIA—Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults—at Old St. Pat’s in November 2009. The 4th preaching was January 2015 at Faith Community MB Church.
