Why do we need Staying Power? For a Better Life!

We all want to make their lives better, but what exactly does that really mean? And how do we do it without burdening ourselves and others with expectations and demands? While “a better life” might look different for each of us in the details, we can still learn so much from one another’s journeys, experiences, ideas, and vulnerabilities. Above all, a better life is based in connection – with ourselves and others and the world around us – and in curiosity, possibility, love, and meaning. Oh, and FUN!

Staying Power is a show about all these and more. Hosts JDK Wyneken and Ashley Knebel – friends, entrepreneurs, Certified Human Potential Coaches, and all-around fun humans – invite you to join them each week to explore the numerous ways we can build better lives on our own terms and improve how we show up in the world. Sharing their own lives along the way and basing their topics in the latest research, JD and Ashley range their discussions around things like personal health and nutrition, emotional intelligence, the challenges we face in an increasingly interconnected yet tenser world, and living in the Now with more acceptance and less fear. Their show guests bring the same and so much more!

Always high energy, always fun, always thoughtful, and always practical and useful right away, Staying Power is your weekly dose of empowerment to better build the best thing out there – yourself!

Staying Power
When Hope Helps - And When It Holds Us Back
Episode 103: “When Hope Helps — And When It Holds Us Back” It’s Christmas Eve — a night filled with symbolism, expectation, longing, and hope. But what is “hope” in real human terms? And how do we hold hope without drifting into passivity, denial, or waiting for someone else to rescue us? In this episode, JDK and Ashley gently explore hope’s emotional, spiritual, and psychological dimensions. They examine how hope can be a powerful motivator — and how, when misunderstood, it can keep us stuck, waiting, or disconnected from the present moment. Drawing on research from neuroscience, behavioral psychology, and meaning-based therapies, they reframe hope as an active, values-driven practice rather than a passive wish. With stories, reflection, and practical guidance, this Christmas Eve conversation invites listeners into a grounded, compassionate, and intentional way of bringing hope into each new day. From ‘Should’ to ‘Want’: Creating Your Own Holiday Season
Episode 102: From ‘Should’ to ‘Want’: Creating Your Own Holiday Season The holidays can easily become a season of autopilot — traditions we never question, expectations we silently carry, and routines that leave little room for what we actually want. In this episode of Staying Power, JDK and Ashley explore the power of setting clear intentions — and actually following through on them — especially during a time when the world around us pulls hard in every direction. Drawing on insights from psychology, behavioral science, and nervous system research, they unpack why intention-setting works better than goal-setting, how to break out of holiday “shoulds,” and what it takes to make choices that protect our emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Through personal stories (including Ashley’s Thanksgiving unplugging), they offer practical tools to help listeners create a season — and a new year — that feels aligned and nourishing. Why Time With Our Elders Matters
Episode 101: “Why Time With Our Elders Matters” We say we “should” spend more time with our aging parents and elders — but life gets busy, visits get delayed, and loneliness quietly grows. In this episode of Staying Power, JDK and Ashley explore why time with seniors is far more than a nice gesture. It’s medicine: for their bodies and brains, for our own mental health, and for a culture that often sidelines older adults. Drawing on geriatric medicine, the psychology of aging, neuroscience, and social interaction research — plus wisdom from ancient traditions — they unpack how intergenerational connection protects against dementia, depression, and early mortality, while also deepening meaning, perspective, and resilience for younger generations. The episode closes with practical, doable ways to show up for the elders in your life — and what pitfalls to avoid so those interactions feel dignified, mutual, and genuinely life-giving. Nine Lessons From Our Hardest Moments
Episode 099: "Nine Lessons From Our Hardest Moments"  As we all enter the season of gratitude, the show takes a look back — not at achievements, but at adversity. In this special episode, JDK and Ashley each share three personal challenges they’ve overcome that have shaped them, revealing them to each other for the first time live on air. Through spontaneous reflection, they explore what those experiences taught them about resilience, growth, and the process of integrating life’s hardest moments into lasting wisdom. Along the way, they’ll highlight the common threads that help all of us turn pain into purpose — and how to support others as they do the same. That Awkward Bridge Between Chapters
Episode 098: "That Awkward Bridge Between Chapters" We all know that strange emotional space between life chapters — when something has ended or changed, but the next thing hasn’t quite begun. It’s awkward, disorienting, and often filled with doubt, waiting, and mixed feelings. In this episode of Staying Power, JDK and Ashley explore what happens inside us — psychologically, neurologically, and emotionally — during those “in-between” periods. Together they unpack why transitions can feel so heavy, how to navigate uncertainty without forcing clarity, and how to build trust in what’s still unfolding. They give on-the-spot answers to questions ranging from the deeply serious to downright silly, all revealing a great deal about the hosts as they build an even deeper connection! The Space Between My Truth and Yours
Episode 097: “The Space Between My Truth and Yours” Disagreement doesn’t have to mean disconnection. In an age of constant polarization, we’re quick to assume that difference equals danger — but it doesn’t have to. In this episode of Staying Power, JDK and Ashley explore how two people can both “be right” from their own lived experience, and still stay curious, compassionate, and connected. They unpack what psychology and neuroscience say about cognitive flexibility, emotional safety, and why the brain craves certainty even when it costs us closeness. Learn practical ways to hold space for “two truths” in your relationships — from partners and coworkers to friends and family — and why the capacity to do so might be one of the most important resilience skills of our time. Letting People Be Themselves (Without Losing Yourself)
Episode 096: “Letting People Be Themselves (Without Losing Yourself)” Why is it so hard to stop trying to “fix” or “improve” other people — even when we know it rarely works? Whether it’s a partner, co-worker, or family member, most of us try to shape others to meet our comfort zones, beliefs, or needs for control. In this episode of Staying Power, JDK and Ashley unpack the deep human drive behind this habit — from nervous system survival patterns to attachment conditioning — and explore how we can build healthier, more authentic connections through acceptance and self-awareness. Learn how to recognize manipulation (even subtle, well-intended kinds), set compassionate boundaries, and shift your focus from control to connection through both mindset and somatic tools. The Bright Side Has Clouds Too
Episode 095: “The Bright Side Has Clouds Too” We often think of “happy” people as immune to bad days — or that those who struggle with sadness or stress can’t genuinely embrace positivity. In this episode of Staying Power, JDK and Ashley explore why both ideas miss the mark. True happiness isn’t about constant positivity; it’s about balance — the ability to hold space for hard emotions and good ones without falling into toxic positivity or hopeless pessimism. With insights from psychology and neuroscience, they unpack how resilient people manage emotional ups and downs, what happiness actually means in research terms, and how to cultivate emotional flexibility in daily life. Episode 094: "When Inner Turmoil Hijacks Your Best Habits" We all know the feeling: endless tasks, heavy responsibilities, and the pressure to perform—while at the same time trying to honor our health with sleep, exercise, food, connection, and calm. In this episode, JD and Ashley explore what happens inside us when inner turmoil disrupts our routines, why our brains make bad trade-offs under stress, and how to reset without guilt. Healing is Hard, Healing is Worth It
Episode 089: “Healing is Hard, Healing is Worth It” First responders see and experience trauma daily — and often carry those wounds long after the sirens fade. In this episode of Staying Power, JD Wyneken and Ashley Knebel talk with trauma psychologist Dr. Denise Haselwood about how trauma rewires the brain, why it changes thoughts and behavior, and most importantly, how it can be healed. Denise shares practical insights, science-based therapies, and real stories from her work with firefighters, police, EMTs, and more. If you’re a first responder — or someone who loves one — this episode offers knowledge, hope, and proof that healing is possible, even if it feels a little “weird” along the way. Learner-Driven Kids, Life-Ready Adults
Episode 088: “Learner-Driven Kids, Life-Ready Adults” Branching off of last week’s episode, JDK and Ashley are joined by Chris Wolf, co-founder of Pathfinders, a learner-driven school in Sammamish, WA that is part of the Acton Academy network. In a wide-ranging conversation, they explore why structured, Socratic-focused learning helps kids become resilient problem-solvers familiar with failures and successes, and how those same practices translate to healthier adult life. They also address the philosophical foundations of Acton, discuss how parents and home life are keys to success, and identify some important ways in which Pathfinders helps kids develop how to Do, how to Learn, and how to Be. Fail Better: The Case for Small Stumbles
Episode 087 - Fail Better: The Case for Small Stumbles Failure gets a bad rap. But what if failure — especially small, everyday stumbles — is one of the best tools we have for building strength and confidence? In this episode, JD Wyneken and Ashley Knebel explore why our brains are wired to avoid mistakes at all costs, why that avoidance often holds us back, and how embracing “micro-fails” can actually supercharge resilience. With stories, laughter, and science, they show how tripping up can be the best way to move forward.
