In celebration for my anniversary of releasing the 1st episode as well as the monumental 50th episode I am sharing with you the parts of my recording that usually hit the "cutting room floor" all Renee chat, no Sustainability chat.
You may end up using this episode as a little mental break when you need to go on a short walk to talk to dogs, birds, squirrels and puppies.

In this episode I walk you through my experience at Seattle Coffee Festival and what they did to have GREAT SUCCESS at their sustainability initiative.
They were working on reducing landfill waste and aiming for a compostable waste festival. It went super well, hear what worked, what needs improvement for next time, and hopefully take away a better understanding of how to jump in and start making sustainability a priority at your next event (even if you don't get to Net Zero!)

ONE SMALL CHANGE TODAY
Behavioral Psychology (n) the study of the connection between the human mind and people's behavior.
Bystander Effect: a phenomenon in which people fail to offer needed help in emergencies, especially when other people are present in the same setting. Studies of this tendency, initially described in response to well-publicized failures of bystanders to render aid in emergencies, have identified a number of psychological and interpersonal processes that inhibit helping, including misinterpreting other people’s lack of response as an indication that help is not needed, confusion of responsibility, and diffusion of responsibility.

My first ever RERUN! This is a re-edited version of the classic episode, #9 Event Pros are LEADERS:
In this episode, I dive into the premise of event planning as a powerful form of leadership. Event planners shape environments that influence attendees' actions, ideas, and emotions, making us natural leaders in the process. I how to incorporate sustainability as a benefit of your leadership.
I share my perspective on how we, as event professionals, can lead by example—setting high standards, influencing client perceptions, and fostering a culture of collaboration and sustainability within our communities.

Buzzword: defined as "A buzzword is a word or phrase, new or already existing, that becomes popular for a period of time. Buzzwords often derive from technical terms yet often have much of the original technical meaning removed through fashionable use, being simply used to impress others."
If you listen to this podcast then for you Sustainability should NOT be a buzzword... But if you don't feel like you have the literacy and feel like you can't use the techincal terms with any comfort it's time to do a refresh.

Educating the world about what is sustainable, how to make more sustainable choices, and how to support real sustainable action is the 12th of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
In this episode I talk about the power of educating your attendees, clients, audience, and marketing about your sustainability goals, action steps, and expectations. I also challenge you to convert the style of some of your marketing communications from a promotional tone, to an educational tone.

*One Simple Change TODAY*
Signage - Your ONE simple change for today is (for planners) ask for and/or (for printers) make a policy that all Signage materials must be recyclable.
I would NEVER advocate for less signage - so that means we need to be smart about the qualities of all our helpful signs. As with all materials it is part of the "know how every item exits the event" policy, in this case recycle is superior to landfill.
Benefits:
-Recycling is a better option than Landfill
-Making 100% of materials recyclable and communicating that to all teams (planning/strike, venue, client) reduces confusion and extra management of supplies during strike
-You never have to worry about guests or staff asking "where does this go?" again and get to confidently tell your client and attendees that you are a Leader in recycling event materials.

The next evolution of event planning is cooperative sustainability! Have you heard of events sharing a carpet install?
This week I talk about maximizing your environmental and economic sustainability by collaborating with your venue and the events before and after yours to preserve things like carpet installs, expensive tech rentals/deliveries, and other drop off/pick-up decor.
You could wind up with big discounts, reduced waste, a great report for your event footprint, and more collaborators in your network! How have you made your supplies more sustainable through sharing?

Looking for a simple method to improve your sustainability metrics (in any Pillar: environmental, social/community, personal health, economic) that doesn't change your workload? Consider what The Sound Hotel in Seattle did with their Cocktails for a Cause. By doing a charitable donation profit share they:
1) Do good in the community
2) Let consumers know their company values by which charities they feature
3) Get great content for their social media - rotating menu item!
4) Encourage repeat business from locals to support the new cause each month
If you were to try something like this in your business it might look like: Pledging with 1% For the Planet {https://www.onepercentfortheplanet.org/} doing a similar monthly or annual profit % donation, pledge a flat amount or percent per contract, offer employees paid hours to donate their time, donate your time on chariable boards, feature a cause for education in your business communications, donate in-kind services to a charity as a content partnership, or something completely unique!
Remember, whether you're supplimenting what your company already does, showcasing a goal that means a lot to you from the UN Sustainable Development Goals, or using it as an offset for an area that your business doesn't normally effect or struggles to improve, charitable donations can be a GREAT way for wins all around.

In this episode I do a bit of a blinded audit on an event I visited last week. Rather than an episode of solutions it's an episode of reviewing an event and asking questions.
Questions like: Who needs to be responsible for making better decisions? How does chain of custody change waste management? Do we need to change the expectations of clients or planners? How can planners be sure to offer more sustainable plans for their events?

When you feel overwhelmed that the systems you work within can't handle the beautifully sustainable plan you've designed, A) you're not wrong or crazy, that is a real problem and it sucks; B) don't give up, send up the smoke signals that show the powers-that-be where the weaknesses are in our local systems. Remember events are invisible to the outside world, so regulating for us and solving our problems is hard. The bureaucrats and the government agencies need problems to be persistent and prolonged before they get addressed so we need to start documenting what doesn't work and letting them know. This applies to all 4 Pillars: environmental, social/community, personal health, and economic. Whether a law, an expense, a penalty, or simply the lack or solution or service is the reason we have to tell someone who can make an impact.
Whether it is your city council, mayor, health department, governor, state departments, or waste management here is an easy template you can keep in your email to send as soon as you run into a problem. Want the problem to seem more urgent? Have 3 friends send similar complaints from their businesses!
Here is your Email Template:
Dear [whoever I'm writing to],
I am an event planner, I work on community and corporate events, between 100 and 20,000 attendees large, depending on the event. I'm currently running into a problem with [X]. The demand from the community and the best course of action would be to [Y] but I cannot, because of [Z]. I feel due to the demand by the community, it's important that you know that this gap exists.
Thank you for your consideration. Feel free to reach out to me if you need clarification.
Sincerely,
[Me]
[Business Name]
[Address to show I'm in their constituency - or location of your event if that is more pertinent]
And sorry if you end up an advisor to government committees for people such a contributing member of your community! I told you already, you're smarter and probably better than lots of people out there.

In this episode, despite my victorious comments, I have not mastered the audio problems. You can tell I go straight back to pounding the pavement by the end.
In the bulk of the episode you'll hear about what kind of oversight and intervention will eventually creep into your events. Your decision is whether to be prepared and have the changes roll off you like water off a duck's back or wait and gamble the timing of involuntary enforcement.

SUMMER TIME!
Let's go over some ideas to make sure your Outdoor Events are maximizing your sustainability choices.
- Environmental - Try to use renewable power, or cleanER when that's not an option. Reduce trash onsite by encouraging water vessels be refilled and by getting outdoor friendly dish rentals (like Bold Reuse, R.World, even CORT.) If you use compostable be sure to check: is it commercial compost only? Do you have waste sorting? Do you have compost pickup?
- Social/Community - Do a review for accessibility based on physical access, safe resting places, and oases from the sunshine. Also, check out your subconscious bias. In America, we have a historic subconscious (from a very conscious) bias against black and other non-white people being allowed in outdoor spaces to have fun, practice getting ahead of that and reducing your biases in general.
- Personal Health/Well-Being - WATER, make sure people have access to it and there is enough. Bathrooms, now that the population is hydrated, be sure to have enough bathrooms easily accessible. SUNSCREEN, I go on a tangent here about how reef-safe sunscreen is important in all environments due to how all waterways eventually merge, we don't want aquatic-life killing chemicals in any part of the water system. Also all humans with skin need sunscreen and protection from UV, not just pale white people like me.
- Economic - Instead of recommending to make positive investments with your money this time, I remind you to NOT HARM your local economy in the area of your event. Be conscientious.
