Tasting Room Radio
November 22nd 2025- The spectacular, award winning winemaker Mary McDermott and Township 7
The spectacular, award winning winemaker Mary McDermott and Township 7 & seven stars Fall releases.

THE SHOW

At the 2025 “Nationals”  – (Wine Align National Wine Awards) – Township 7 received the highest number of awards of any sparkling producer in Canada.

Three Gold Medals
Three Silver Medals
The 2017 seven stars Sirius alone received a Gold Medal and 92 points from an elite judging panel.
Also handed a Gold Medal was the 2021 seven stars Polaris

“We craft these vintage sparklings in very small lots, in the true traditional method, with time, care, and uncompromising standards. To be recognized as the most highly awarded sparkling producer in Canada is a tremendous honour for both myself and our entire team.”
Mary McDermott.

Township 7 has two main vineyard locations.
The original, right next door to where I  started Tasting Room Radio, in a studio in a barn, on the Naramata Bench and their surprising vineyard in Langley..

Why surprising?  Well, 15 years ago when I asked about vineyards in the Fraser Valley, the response from all was immediate “you can’t grow grapes there, not enough heat.”
What they and I didn’t know was that sparkling wines can do very well without “heat” because they make up for it with character and minerality and finesse.
Basically, everything that sparkling wine showcases.  All with outstanding aging potential.

Mary is kindly going to walk you and I through 4 new releases.  Each deserves a grand moment in the spotlight.

2021  seven stars Polaris  A Blanc de Blancs Brut,  100% unoaked Chardonnay.  Grown at Hidden Terrace vineyard in North Oliver and Township 7 in Naramata. Aged en tirage for 21 months to develop delicate autolytic notes.  Following disgorgement,  Polaris was bottle aged for 18 months.  $37.97 (at winery)

2017 seven stars Sirius.
Amazing blend,  crafted from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Harvested, pressed and co-fermented together.
Left en tirage for 60 months and carefully crafted by Mary to enhance depth, texture and complexity.  Then spent an additional two years in bottle before release. The payoff, a wine with depth, nuance and balance. Gorgeous  mouthfeel.   Crafted by a true artist Mary McDermott. $79.97 (at winery)

2017 seven stars Sirius  (late disgorged)
Made by the same process and care as the wine above. However, the wine was left en tirage for 72 months (12 months longer)  What followed was complexity and softness on the acidity. The additional year developed “character”.   Something to celebrate?  Or, the end of a weird year?  Here’s your reward.   $79.97 (at winery)  Highly Recommended.

2022 Provenance Series Cabernet Merlot. – a delicious blend of 78% Cab and 22% Merlot. Grown in part in Naramata and Osoyoos. This is a wow wine.
Finding the best of her barrels Mary crafted a fruit forward blend, , driven by tannins and complexity.  Aged for 18 months in a combo of French and American oak.  Lots of character, yummy moments and balance.  $29.97 (at winery)

November 1st, 2025- Tasting Room Radio with David Paterson and Tantalus Winery.
A Complete Tasting Room Radio with David Paterson and Tantalus Winery.

THE SHOW
I’ve been counting down the days to the end of 2025 Harvest.
It marks the end of the 2025 growing season AND my first chance to interview Tantalus Winery GM and Winemaker David Paterson.
First,  to talk about the National Wine Awards where Tantalus was named #6 winery in BC, one of the Top 10 wineries in Canada and #10 of the Top 25 in Canada.
www.winealign.com/awards

“This year’s results—five Golds, three Silvers, and a Bronze—reflect the thoughtful work happening across our vineyard sites and in our cellar. With over 1,700 wines entered from 250 wineries across the country, we’re truly honoured to be recognized among such a strong showing from coast to coast.
A sincere congratulations to our growing and winemaking teams for their care in bringing these wines to life. It hasn’t been an easy few years for viticulture in the Interior, and so we’re feeling pretty grateful for a few feathers in our cap as we approach vintage 2025.”

David covers a lot of subjects

Tantalus Crafted in BC wines, crop loss, using his extensive winemaking contacts in Oregon and Ontario. The resilience of BC wineries to survive what nature throws at them, finding vineyards growing the same Riesling clones Tantalus grows.

David takes us through various Tantalus wines.

2024 Pinot Noir Rose (Oregon)
2024 Riesling (Ontario)
Old Vines Riesling (21B) 95 Decanter
Tantalus Riesling LAB (Experiment #14)
Pinot Gris (Oregon)

(I love the fact that the Ontario grapes were harvested, packed in special containers and two drivers drove the truck 16 hours to reach Kelowna)

David also takes us through pairing Tantalus wines with the demanding flavors from Angus An’s Maenam menu and finishes with an extended and passionate rant about wine trade between our provinces and who’s standing in the way.

Michal Mosny (Winemakers Cut) & James Lester (Sons of Vancouver)

The SHOW

Michal Mosny – co-founder and winemaker Winemaker’s Cut

Michal and Martina Mosny were making wine in Slovakia years ago.
They watched a tv series called Hollywood and Vines. They saw the hosts walking vineyards and talking to the winemakers of the Okanagan Valley.
Jason Priestley and I were the hosts.
Impressed with the wines being grown and the beauty of the Okanagan Valley,  they decided to move to Oliver, BC and make their own wines. Called the winery Winemaker’s Cut.

Years later,  I finally meet Michal at a Victoria wine gathering. He’s pouring  the very popular Winemaker’s Cut portfolio and tells me the story behind the wines and their dreams.
Michal suggested making a wine with Jason and myself to celebrate the story. That’s how Q&A wines became part of Michals portfolio.

So, here we are much later,  meeting again in Victoria. His portfolio continues to grow at District Wine Village in Oliver.
Chard, Cab Franc, Pinot Noir,  the Bohemian Wines, Boho wines, Madama Butterfly Sparkling and the “Crafted in BC”
Sparkling, Sauv Blanc, Rose, Muscat and  Gruner. Plus the NO/Low from The Opera Room next door.

Winemakers Cut has a some surprises coming.  Michal walks us through some of them.
Some stay secret projects.

James Lester – Founding Partner at Sons of Vancouver.

“One of the benefits of being a small, independent distillery is that we each have our hands on every part of the whisky-making process, from mashing to bottling. Every bottle is hand-filled, sealed, and labelled with care by a member of our whisky-making team.”

I first met James after SOV had be named Canadian Whisky of the Year in 2023 for their Palm Trees and a Tropical Breeze.
It was so unexpected no one from SOV bothered to go to the event. It was David beating a gang of Goliath’s.
Now, of course, everything they make is followed so much they have their own YouTube Channel.

By allowing the whisky itself to guide the blend, each bottling is unique and provides an outlet to highlight the spectrum of flavours naturally developed through fermentation, distillation, and maturation. Expressions are often left at cask-strength to provide a well-rounded whisky with a robust mouthfeel.
Sons of Vancouver Numbered Whiskies are released 8 – 10 times per year, in very limited quantities. Releases tend to sell out the same day (or sometimes within a few minutes). Signing up for their whisky mailing list is the best way to find out about releases and get your hands on a bottle.
Recent limited releases include
#15 Palm Trees and a Tropical Breeze (2025)
#16 Palm trees and a Tropical Storm (2025)
Both are Sold Out BUT if you get yourself signed up on the whisky mailing list, you can make your own game plan.
Check out the yearly RYE HARD Whisky Advent Calendar. 24 bottles of sheer adventure.

Also don’t miss Realms of Rye – Release #3 “menthol and evergreen”. Unfiltered, no flavouring, no colouring.
And finally –
Congratulations to James on his marriage this year. Ceremony in Ucluelet and Honeymoon in Mexico City.

October 18th, 2025- Cobble Hill Winery!
This is such a great story.
Three professionals had a wine dream that turned into a plan and now a winery.
Steve Beecroft,  was born in a farming family in Trenton, Ont. Had a successful career in banking.
The love of his life, Tricia Huebner was a highly respected marketing and communications specialist.
Dylan Sheldon grew up on Kauai, Hawaii. He became a winemaker. His talent and success turned him into a flying winemaker. Working in Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania,  France and Sonoma he developed a desire to make singular wines. Dylan had a personal vineyard near Napa. Sheldon Wines. When pulled, the cork said “free at last”
That’s exactly what Steve and Tricia wanted to do. When they happened to meet each other in Napa/Sonoma, it became apparent that they had each met a wine soul mate.
Each of them wanted to grow and create outstanding wines in regions that hadn’t been overrun.
Alberino, Viognier, Gamay, Zweigelt, Sauvignon Blanc, a legendary Pinot Noir clone named Calera, Chenin Blanc, Gruner Veltliner, muscat & Gewurztraminer, Verdelho,   etc.
They took 5 trips to Italy. Then decided to try Canada. Stops in Ontario and the Okanagan.
Finally,  all agreed that if they were changing their lives , the destination must include water…a lot of water. As in the Pacific Ocean.
All of which is how Steve, Tricia and Dylan ended up several miles from me at Cobble Hill  in the Cowichan Valley, on Vancouver Island.  They bought a lavender and vineyard property called Denali.
They have turned it into a beautiful vineyard with slopes ,  hollows and 1000’s of new plantings.
Tricia was amazed to discover that no one had taken the name Cobble Hill Wine.

Here is the complete story as told by Dylan, Tricia and Steve from the exciting new   – Cobble Hill Winery.
You’ll want to keep an eye on their releases. They don’t yet make a lot of wine but those days are coming.
Cobble Hill will become a destination as soon as those new wines come out.

They have a newsletter and a great website.
