What is life like for an African living in Europe. Femi Soewu and Christine Nyotta compare generational views about how they see life and living in Europe.
Christine Nyotta (3 years in Europe) is coming into the conversation with the fresh eyes of someone still adapting and learning, while Femi Soewu (35 years in Europe) has lived through so much change and transition over three decades.
We are diving deep into issues of racial bias, gender identity, social integration, and how we as Africans fit into European society in ways that are often not so visible. We also tackle job opportunities, the stereotypes we face, dating and relationships, and what it means to navigate Europe with both the burden and beauty of being African.
So sit back, get comfortable, and let’s take this journey together as we unpack The African Experience in Europe.

Dissecting the myth that European colonialists built Africa. The West has long controlled the global narrative through media, academia, and industry. So when African cultures do something first, it’s often ignored and vilified. When the West adopts the same thing, it’s seen as a breakthrough. Africans have often been made to feel ashamed of their own innovations, only to see the same ideas celebrated globally once the West finds a way to adopt, and sell them. Africa Web TV's creative director, Femi Soewu says in this, the latest edition of The African Narratives Podcast that, Africans must stop allowing others to define who we are. Because when we don’t tell our stories, they tell them for us and they leave out our brilliance. But we are not what they say we are. We are what we say we are. We should teach African children African heroes and be proud of African achievements.

When we, as Africans, talk about our pain — the centuries of loss, the degradation, the theft of land, dignity, history, culture, names and identity — we are not attacking you. We are healing. We are reaching into our past not to throw stones, but to pick up the pieces of our shattered story. When we speak of our pain, we are not asking for pity or for you to feel guilty. We are asking for something much simpler: acknowledgment. Acknowledge the role that your ancestors played in the shaping of the world we live in today.
We are not asking you to carry the weight of that past but we are asking for your recognition. We are asking for a chance to heal, to move forward, and to reclaim what was stolen from us. Because without acknowledgment, healing is impossible. Without recognition, reconciliation is impossible.
Don’t tell us how to feel. Walk beside us. Acknowledge. Learn. Reflect. Teach your children about the whole story not just the parts that make Europe and The USA look noble.
Support African businesses. Celebrate African art without appropriating it. Give space in the global conversation for African voices, not just African tragedies. Ultimately, we don’t want division. We want dignity. We don’t want revenge. We want restoration. We want to arrive on the other side — where our children, yours and mine, can sit at the same table, proud of their histories, respectful of each other’s roots, building a future that is whole.
Where we are no longer fighting to be seen as equals — but simply are. Watch the visual podcast here: https://youtu.be/k5pPccLPGAM

It is time for Africans to embrace their African names and and their rich heritage. When we call ourselves or someone else by a name, we’re acknowledging their history and, in many cases, the story of where they come from. Names carry meaning, often specific meanings that can relate to family history, significant events, or even spiritual beliefs. Names are more than just labels; they are the first reflection of our identity to the world. A name carries with it history, culture, time, and place. It’s a bridge that connects us to our roots, our ancestors, and our heritage.
For many Africans, that connection has been severed, disrupted, or altered due to centuries of colonialism, the transatlantic and trans-Saharan slave trades, and cultural erasure. many African-Americans, Afro-Caribbeans, and Africans in the diaspora still bear European names, names that were not chosen by their ancestors but imposed upon them as part of a process to dehumanise and dominate.
For Africans who were enslaved, names were tools of control—tools that erased their original identity. Enslaved Africans could no longer trace their ancestors to a specific African region or community. This has created a generation of Africans in the diaspora who struggle with an identity crisis, disconnected from the cultural histories of their African forebears.

Ali Abdi says environmental pollution by Western countries is destroying Africa. Instead of sending troops to invade Africa, the west is now sending men in suits to do their dirty work.
