Sometimes the simplest stories leave the most lasting impression. Jesus used a similar technique when he spoke to his followers. Jesus uses common, everyday imagery–one more sign that He made the Gospel accessible enough for people to relate to if they seek Him. Jesus wants to be found and to connect with us. He’s not trying to make it difficult. This in itself is contrasting to the Pharisees.

They say “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” but honestly most of the time imitation is just so very funny… When comedians imitate others, or when our kids imitate us!  Jesus wasn’t just imitating his Father though–Jesus was the same as His Father, and this is crucial for us to know in terms of our relationship with God.

Waiting can feel passive—like sitting at a bus stop with no control over when it arrives. Anticipating, though, is different; it’s active, like packing your bags and standing ready for the journey. Mary’s story reminds us that preparation for God’s promises often looks like worship, even when the full picture isn’t clear.
