Is Christmas really the same when you get older? Is the magic still there in your 20s, 30s, and 40s? Do you still feel the Christmas Spirit? Join us as we take a walk back to the greatness of all of our childhoods. The animated specials that make it feel like Christmas time. On this episode we look at the Rankin/Bass Specials, or rather, our favorites and discuss what makes them timeless and how they help bring the Christmas Spirit year after year!Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment (founded and formerly known as Videocraft International, Ltd. and Rankin/Bass Productions, Inc.) was an American production company located in New York City. It was known for its seasonal television specials, usually done in stop motion animation. Rankin/Bass's stop-motion productions are recognizable by their visual style of doll-like characters with spheroid body parts.Nearly all of the studio's animation was outsourced to Japanese animation companies, such as Toei Animation, MOM Production, Mushi Productions and Topcraft. Rankin/Bass was one of the first Western studios to outsource their low-budget animated television and film productions to animation studios in foreign countries; the others that already practiced animation outsourcing include Total Television and King Features Syndicate TV in New York City; and Hanna-Barbera and Jay Ward Productions in Los Angeles, California.Subscribe to our Patreon https://patreon.com/TheGrindhousePodcast Check out or Merch! https://grindhouse-merch.printify.me/ Watch Last Weeks Episode! https://youtu.be/dg9Vyj2TYXkFacebook @thegrindhousepodcast Instagram @thegrindhousepodcast TikTok @thegrindhousepodcast Check out New Episodes Every Saturday At 3:00pm EST

How The GRINCH Held Up A Mirror to SOCIETY (How The Grinch Stole Christmas 2000)

Do you ever feel like Christmas isn't quite... *Christmas* anymore? What if I told you the true spirit of the season has been slowly eroded, not by Ebenezer Scrooge, but by something far more pervasive? We're going to uncover how commercialism quietly stole the art and soul of Christmas, right from under our noses.Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a 2000 American Christmas fantasy comedy film directed by Ron Howard and written by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman, based on the 1957 children's book by Dr. Seuss. It was the first Dr. Seuss book to be adapted into a live-action feature film, and the second adaptation of the book, following the 1966 animated TV special. Narrated by Anthony Hopkins, the film stars Jim Carrey as the Grinch, with Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Bill Irwin and Molly Shannon in supporting roles. The story revolves around a grouchy, green recluse living on Mount Crumpit, who despises Christmas and the joyful residents of Whoville and sets out to sabotage their holiday celebration. How the Grinch Stole Christmas was released in the United States on November 17, 2000, by Universal Pictures. It received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $347 million, with a budget of $123 million, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2000 domestically, the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2000 worldwide, and the second highest-grossing holiday film of all time behind Home Alone (1990). At the 73rd Academy Awards, the film won Best Makeup and Hairstyling, in addition to earning nominations for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. Carrey's performance earned him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.Subscribe to our Patreon https://patreon.com/TheGrindhousePodcast Check out or Merch! https://grindhouse-merch.printify.me/ Watch Last Weeks Episode! https://youtu.be/D3ulMeI6id8 Facebook @thegrindhousepodcast Instagram @thegrindhousepodcast TikTok @thegrindhousepodcast Check out New Episodes Every Saturday At 3:00pm EST

Beyond the Pizza: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Enduring Legacy (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990)

Remember Saturday mornings, hunched over a bowl of cereal, watching four sewer-dwelling, pizza-loving ninjas? But what if I told you TMNT's impact goes way deeper than just cartoons? Get ready to unearth the secret sauce behind the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' enduring legacy that captured generations.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles A is a 1990 American superhero film based on the comic book characters created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. It is the first film in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Directed by Steve Barron and written by Todd W. Langen and Bobby Herbeck from a story by Herbeck, it stars Judith Hoag and Elias Koteas with the voices of Brian Tochi, Josh Pais, Corey Feldman, and Robbie Rist. The film follows the Turtles on a quest to save their master, Splinter, with their new allies, April O'Neil and Casey Jones, from the Shredder and his Foot Clan. The film adapts the early Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics, with several elements taken from the animated series airing at the time. Filming took place in 1989 in North Carolina and New York City. Many major studios turned down distribution for the film, worrying that it could be a box office disappointment. New Line Cinema, at that time a small independent production company, acquired the rights halfway through production. The turtle costumes were developed by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, one of Jim Henson's last projects before his death shortly after the premiere.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was released theatrically in the United States on March 30, 1990, by New Line Cinema. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $202 million on a budget of $13.5 million; it was the highest-grossing independent film up to that time and the ninth-highest-grossing film worldwide of 1990. It was followed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993).Subscribe to our Patreon https://patreon.com/TheGrindhousePodcast Check out or Merch! https://grindhouse-merch.printify.me/ Watch Last Weeks Episode! https://youtu.be/D3ulMeI6id8 Facebook @thegrindhousepodcast Instagram @thegrindhousepodcast TikTok @thegrindhousepodcast Check out New Episodes Every Saturday At 3:00pm EST

The Counterculture's Anthem: Alice's Restaurants' Enduring Message (Alice's Restaurant 1969)

What if a song about a Thanksgiving dinner gone wrong became an anthem for an entire generation? We're diving deep into 'Alice's Restaurant,' not just as a folk classic, but as a hilarious and profound commentary on freedom, authority, and the spirit of the 1960s counterculture that still echoes today. You won't believe how relevant this nearly 60-year-old story remains.Alice's Restaurant is a 1969 American comedy film directed by Arthur Penn. It is an adaptation of the 1967 folk song "Alice's Restaurant Massacree", originally written and sung by Arlo Guthrie. The film stars Guthrie as himself, with Pat Quinn as Alice Brock and James Broderick as Ray Brock. Penn, who resided in the story's setting of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, co-wrote the screenplay in 1967 with Venable Herndon after hearing the song and more of the story from Brock's father, who was on the board of directors at The Berkshire Playhouse, and shortly after directing Bonnie & Clyde.Alice's Restaurant premiered in Boston on August 19, 1969, a few days after Guthrie appeared at the Woodstock Festival. A soundtrack album for the film was also released by United Artists Records. The soundtrack includes a studio version of the title song, which was originally divided into two parts (one for each album side); a 1998 CD reissue on the Rykodisc label presents this version of the song in full, and adds several bonus tracks to the original LP.Subscribe to our Patreon https://patreon.com/TheGrindhousePodcast Check out or Merch! https://grindhouse-merch.printify.me/ Watch Last Weeks Episode! https://youtu.be/LaarQJcBmvo Facebook @thegrindhousepodcast Instagram @thegrindhousepodcast TikTok @thegrindhousepodcast Check out New Episodes Every Saturday At 3:00pm EST

The Movie That Wanted To Be A CULT CLASSIC (Snakes on a Plane 2006)

Picture this: a movie title so literal, a marketing campaign so hyped, and yet, 'Snakes on a Plane' completely defied expectations. It wasn't the cinematic event of the year, but somehow, it slithered its way into the hearts of millions. How did this seemingly average action film become an unexpected, beloved cult phenomenon? Let's dive into its bizarre journey.Snakes on a Plane is a 2006 American action thriller  film directed by David R. Ellis and starring Samuel L. Jackson. It was released by New Line Cinema on August 18, 2006, in North America and the UK. The film was written by David Dalessandro, John Heffernan, and Sebastian Gutierrez and follows the events of dozens of venomous snakes being released on a passenger plane in an attempt to kill a trial witness. The film gained a considerable amount of attention before its release, forming large fanbases online and becoming an Internet phenomenon, due to the film's title, casting, and premise. In response to the Internet fan base, New Line Cinema incorporated feedback from online users into its production, and added five days of reshooting. Before and after the film was released, it was parodied and alluded to on television shows and films, fan-made videos, video games, and various forms of literature. The film received mixed reviews and was a "box office disappointment". Despite the immense Internet buzz, the film's gross revenue did not live up to expectations; it earned US $15.25 million in its opening weekend. The film grossed US $62 million worldwide before its release on home video on January 2, 2007.Subscribe to our Patreon https://patreon.com/TheGrindhousePodcast Check out or Merch! https://grindhouse-merch.printify.me/ Watch Last Weeks Episode! https://youtu.be/lQCI6v1juSk Facebook @thegrindhousepodcast Instagram @thegrindhousepodcast TikTok @thegrindhousepodcast Check out New Episodes Every Saturday At 3:00pm EST

It: Welcome to Derry is an American supernatural horror television series based on Stephen King's 1986 novel It. Serving as a prequel to the films It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), the series was developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs, all of whom were involved in the It films. Leone's "Man With No Name" Trilogy BEGINNING (A Fist Full of Dollars 1967)

This isn't just a movie series; it's the genesis of an entire film movement. Before 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' became a cultural touchstone, there was a beginning, a raw, gritty blueprint laid by Sergio Leone. Join us as we journey back to the very first shots fired in the iconic 'Man With No Name' trilogy, films that didn't just break the mold, they shattered it.

A Fistful of Dollars  is a 1964 spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood in his first leading role, alongside Gian Maria Volonté, Marianne Koch, Wolfgang Lukschy, Sieghardt Rupp, José Calvo, Antonio Prieto and Joseph Egger. The film, an international co-production between Italy, West Germany and Spain, was filmed on a low budget (reported to be US$200,000), and Eastwood was paid $15,000 for his role.

Released in Italy in 1964 and in the United States in 1967, the film initiated the popularity of the spaghetti Western genre. It is considered a landmark in cinema and one of the greatest and most influential films of all time. It was followed by For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, both also starring Eastwood. Collectively, these three films became known as the Dollars Trilogy, or the Man with No Name Trilogy, after the United Artists publicity campaign referred to Eastwood's characters in all three films as the "Man with No Name". All three films were released in sequence in the United States in 1967, making Eastwood a national celebrity.

The film has been identified as an unofficial remake of the Akira Kurosawa film Yojimbo (1961), which resulted in a successful lawsuit by Toho, Yojimbo's production company. Kurosawa wrote to Leone directly, saying, "Signor Leone, I have just had the chance to see your film. It is a very fine film, but it is my film. Since Japan is a signatory of the Berne Convention on the international copyright, you must pay me." He and Toho received 15 percent of the film's revenue. Kurosawa earned more money from this settlement than from Yojimbo.

Few spaghetti Westerns had been released in the United States at the time, so many of the European cast and crew adopted American-sounding stage names. These included Leone ("Bob Robertson"), Gian Maria Volonté ("Johnny Wels") and the composer, Ennio Morricone ("Dan Savio"). A Fistful of Dollars was shot in Spain, mostly near Hoyo de Manzanares close to Madrid, but also (like its two sequels) in the Tabernas Desert and in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, both in the Province of Almería.

Unpacking the IMPOSSIBLE (Escape from Alcatraz 1979)

The infamous Alcatraz escape is analyzed, dissecting the cinematic portrayals of its "impossible" elements. The thrilling attempts at freedom are explored, distinguishing fact from Hollywood's dramatic embellishments.

Escape from Alcatraz is a 1979 American prison drama film directed and produced by Don Siegel, that depicts the June 1962 prisoner escape from the federal penitentiary on Alcatraz Island. The screenplay, written by Richard Tuggle, is based on the 1963 non-fiction book of the same name by J. Campbell Bruce, and stars Clint Eastwood as escape ringleader Frank Morris, alongside Patrick McGoohan, Fred Ward, Jack Thibeau, and Larry Hankin with Danny Glover appearing in his film debut.

Shot on location at Alcatraz, the film marks the fifth and final collaboration between Siegel and Eastwood, following Coogan's Bluff (1968), Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970), The Beguiled (1971), and Dirty Harry (1971). Released by Paramount Pictures on June 22, 1979, Escape from Alcatraz received critical acclaim and was a financial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 1979

He is aided by his successor (Banderas), who is pursuing his own vendetta against the governor's right-hand man while falling in love with de la Vega's daughter.

Executive producer Steven Spielberg had initially developed the film for TriStar Pictures with directors Mikael Salomon and Robert Rodriguez, before Campbell signed on in 1996. Salomon cast Sean Connery as Don Diego de la Vega, while Rodriguez brought Banderas in the lead role. Connery dropped out and was replaced with Hopkins, and The Mask of Zorro began filming in January 1997 at Estudios Churubusco in Mexico City, Mexico.

The Mask of Zorro was released in the United States on July 17, 1998, to critical and commercial success, grossing $250.3 million against a $95 million budget. The film was nominated for two awards at the 71st Academy Awards, and two awards at the 56th Golden Globe Awards. A sequel, The Legend of Zorro, also starring Banderas and Zeta-Jones and directed by Campbell, was released in 2005, but did not fare as well as its predecessor.

That Time NICOLAS CAGE Played ELVIS (Wild at Heart 1990)

What do you get when you combine one of the most outlandish actors with the most outlandish directors? You get Wild at Heart. A David Lynch movie starring Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern that is guaranteed to keep you questioning how this is a romantic crime drama.

Wild at Heart is a 1990 American black comedy romantic crime drama thriller film written and directed by David Lynch, based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Barry Gifford. Starring Nicolas Cage, Laura Dern, Willem Dafoe, Crispin Glover, Diane Ladd, Isabella Rossellini, and Harry Dean Stanton, the film follows Sailor Ripley and Lula Fortune, a young couple who go on the run from Lula's domineering mother and the criminals she hires to kill Sailor.

Lynch intended only to produce the film, but after reading Gifford's book, he decided to write and direct it as well. He disliked the ending of the novel and decided to change it to fit his vision of the main characters. The film is noted for its allusions to The Wizard of Oz and Elvis Presley. Early test screenings for the film were poorly received, with Lynch estimating that at least 300 people walked out due to its sexual and violent content.

Wild at Heart won the Palme d'Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival, which at the time was considered a controversial decision. The film was theatrically released in the United States on August 17, 1990, to polarized reviews from critics and grossed $14 million against its $10 million budget. At the 6th Independent Spirit Awards, Dafoe was nominated for Best Supporting Male and Elmes won for Best Cinematography. Ladd was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture at the 63rd Academy Awards and the 48th Golden Globe Awards, respectively. The film has been positively reevaluated by critics in the years since its release.
