The Head Angle BMX Podcast #11: Vince Byron

From the sleepy Central Coast of Australia to the bright lights and glory of 14 XGames Medals, Vince Byron ain’t scared of stepping it up.

His rise from shredding Queensland parks and mini ramps to dominating vert and mega ramps around the world has been meteoric to say the least.

Laid back and funny as ever, Vince sat down for a solid talk on his journey in BMX, the vert riding dilemma, riding snowboard half pipes, ending the Bestwick legacy, Olympic Coaching and of course, the legend of the HiVis. Enjoy! With a VB of course….

The Head Angle BMX Podcast
The Head Angle #10: Dennis McCoy

To ride BMX consistently from the early 80’s to the here and now is virtually unheard of. To have a pro career that’s lasted that long is even rarer. It’s not that much of a stretch of the imagination to simply call it legendary.

Dennis McCoy is a rider that has defined BMX from the day he began riding one. From flatland runs that linked so much into one run, to spinning 900’s on vert along with shredding the streets of Kansas City and the world, his riding has inspired generations.

We sat down with DMC to go deep on his riding career, his early days racing, to wild times with the KC Rogues, a chance meeting with Bob Haro and the amazing ride he embarked on, choosing BMX over an engineering degree at a time when freestyle BMX barely existed. We sat down with DMC to go deep on his riding career, his early days racing, to wild times with the KC Rogues, a chance meeting with Bob Haro and the amazing ride he embarked on, choosing BMX over an engineering degree at a time when freestyle BMX barely existed. To say he made a success of his riding career is an understatement and he ain't showing any signs of slowing down if his recent sessions at our local concrete bowl in Sydney Park are anything to go by.

Come 2024, DMC’s legacy stretches beyond simply a rider. He’s been the spokesman for the riders through the XGames years to redefining course design for the likes of Gravity Games, the Dew Tour and Vans Triple Crown. More recently, his involvement in events saw the epic Vans Pro Cup come to life, heralding in a new generation of transition riders not unlike the OG pipe riders of the 80’s. And his return to Haro is a story in itself.

Lucky for us, Dennis ain’t short on stories, so sit back and enjoy tales from one of BMX’s most legendary and animated characters.

A huge thanks goes out to Mick Nieland for making this happen and showing DMC the Sydney sights!

The Head Angle BMX Podcast
The Head Angle #9: Remy Morton is live now!
After a big ol hiatus, The Head Angle is back! We wanted to be back in studio, but continued lock-downs mean we're still social distancing and finally took the plunge into podcasting via the internet.
So what better time to catch up with a rider that's blurring the boundaries between BMX and MTB; Remy Morton!

We sat down with Remy in his Queenstown shack, well he was, and talk all things BMX, MTB, riding and building big ol trails, bike design and more. We're stoked on this one even if we battled tech and connection difficulties!

We hope you enjoy the Head Angle #9.

The Head Angle #8: Ben ‘Beechy’ Hoysted
His exploits are worldwide, both on and off the bike. From his low-key rural Victorian upbringing, to really coming of age riding wise in Adelaide, to making waves at events like the Battle of Hastings and Swampfest, Beechy’s all in attitude has become something of legend.
The ability to combine his early circus training with vision and straight balls to the wall commitment has seen him grace magazine covers and ground breaking video parts. Never defined by genre, yet, his riding is bigger and badder than most will ever attempt.

We’re very stoked to sit down with a rider not content with the status quo and one that has travelled Australia and the world in search of both epic riding spots and even bigger life experiences. Enjoy!

Watch it above, or listen below. We’re on iTunes and Spotify as well. Get some!

The Head Angle #7: Brandon Loupos
If you had of asked me where 'Mini Mirra' was destined to go when I first met him, I doubt that World Champion and Olympic medal contender would have been on the list!
But thats where Brandon's drive and determination has shone, less than 15 years later, he became the first UCI World Champion proving to many and himself that anything is possible.

We were stoked to sit down with Brandon and talk his early years through to the current day. Kick back and have a listen to a rider that's ensuring the Australian BMX scene is represented on the biggest stage.

The Head Angle BMX Podcast
The Head Angle #6: Eddie FIola
There aren’t many who have stood at the top of a generation of riders, untouchable for their unmatchable style, progressive riding and wins in competition.
Names like Hoffman, Mirra, Aitken and Reynolds spring to mind. Yet before them, one name defined freestyle in its infancy, possibly more than anyone will ever do again. We were stoked and more than a little humbled to sit down with one of the greatest that has ever rolled on 20's (and 20 & 1 3/8...).
We go deep with Eddie, from his humble beginnings in the fabled Cali concrete park scene, to his multiple rolls in the movie based around his life in 'RAD', to his career to date in the Hollywood stunt industry.

So stoked to drop this one. For those that grew up with Eddie's photos on their walls, to those that are just getting their first taste of BMX now. Eddie is nothing short of BMX royalty and his tales are those of legends. Kick back and enjoy!

The Head Angle BMX Podcast
The Head Angle #5: Colin Mackay
If there's one rider that showcases just how far you can go on hard work and determination it's gotta be Colin Mackay.

From humble beginnings not unlike any Australian rider, his drive and determination to take his riding to the world saw him forge a path that nearly every Australian rider since has followed.

His time spent on US soil now spans twenty years, yet his Australian pride runs deeper than ever. From the podiums, his sponsor changes, his place in a video game and current role as Team Manager for the biggest team in BMX under Vans, we delve into Colin’s rich BMX life. A life that still revolves around the simple thing that started it all…

Listen up or if you ain't driving/riding or otherwise, watch the vid!

The Head Angle BMX Podcast
The Head Angle #3: Danger Chris O’Donnell
Every city has its mythical stories about big moves going down on wild spots which can often become legend. In Sydney the man responsible for many of these stories is a bit of a mystery himself. Chris O’Donnell is known to many simply as Danger and his influence over Sydney’s bmx scene spans cultures and generations.

The man is as illusive as he is talented, wherever I travel - the most asked question that riders have about Sydney is "What's Danger doing?"

In episode 3, Danger goes deep. We talk about his solid early bmx roots and influences, his bmx journey, using A.D.D. to get more out of life and he fills us all in on how he keeps it so real.

This episode is gonna be a hard one to top - we hope you all enjoy as much as we all did.

The Head Angle #2: Lewis Mills and Ben Norris
For over 5 years Ben Norris has been the man behind the lens crafting the worlds perception of Lewis Mills as he rose to be notoriety as Garrett's Australian recruit. They take us back to how they found BMX on the Northern Beaches to the trappings of Sydney city culture that pushed them to pursue riding and making videos 100%.

We talk about how weird Sydney is, passing through phases, making art for a living and the journey to potential future projects together. These 2 are the future, you'll be seeing plenty more from these guys don't you worry. Editors note: Ben's recent videos are proof of a young master craftsman on the rise. He released one of our favourite videos of 2018 with Jacman Hinss and I have no doubt he's gonna make another favourite in 2019.

8 days after we recorded this, Lewis debuted in Sydney X-games and won silver in his hometown.

The Head Angle #1: Matt Holmes
If there's a story to tell about documenting BMX in Australia, then it's going to have to include Matt. His early years of riding began in the 80's, of which the spark to document the journey began which lead to travelling, competing, zines, jams, VHS productions and of course 2020 BMX Magazine, he's seen the BMX world go through as many challenges and changes as his own.
