Ep. 43 -Be Present

Embracing the Present: How Dads Can Be Present and Accounted For

Introduction: In today’s fast-paced world, many dads find themselves caught between the demands of work, family, and personal aspirations. In a recent episode of the Just Call Dad podcast, Coach Sean Patrick emphasizes the importance of being present and accounted for in our children's lives. He shares valuable insights and practical tips for fathers looking to improve their connection with their families while navigating daily challenges.

Main Content:

1. Understanding the Concept of Being Present

Coach Sean Patrick opens the episode by discussing the necessity of being genuinely present for our families. He reminds listeners that material possessions and accolades pale in comparison to the value of quality time spent with loved ones. As he puts it, "my present to my family... is far more significant than any gift I can buy."

2. The Importance of Connection

In a world where social media often portrays a filtered version of reality, Sean highlights the significance of authentic connections. He recounts a personal experience of reaching out to friends and feeling disappointed when they didn’t reciprocate. This reflects a common struggle among dads who often invest in friendships that may not be as fulfilling. Sean encourages fathers to focus on those who do connect and to appreciate those relationships more deeply.

3. The Focus 10 and Focus 5 Techniques

To help dads become more present, Sean introduces two techniques: the Focus 10 and Focus 5. The Focus 10 involves dedicating ten uninterrupted minutes to engage in an activity with your child, such as coloring or building with Legos. The Focus 5, on the other hand, encourages quick, active moments like playing tag or having a dance party. These short bursts of focused time can lead to deeper connections and a more engaged parenting experience.

4. Accountability Among Dads

Sean emphasizes the importance of accountability among fathers. He suggests creating a list of four to five dad friends to check in with regularly. By sharing parenting experiences and challenges, dads can support each other in their journeys. This camaraderie can provide motivation and inspiration, reminding each other of the importance of being present for their families.

5. Overcoming the Pressure to Be Perfect

As the holiday season approaches, Sean addresses the pressure many dads feel to be perfect. He encourages listeners to let go of unrealistic expectations and focus instead on simply being present. He reassures that today can still be their best day, regardless of past challenges.

Conclusion: In this enlightening episode, Coach Sean Patrick reminds fathers of the profound impact they can have on their families by simply being present. By implementing techniques like the Focus 10 and Focus 5, and fostering connections with fellow dads, they can enhance their roles as parents. The key takeaway is that being present is more important than striving for perfection. Dads can make a difference by embracing the moments they have now.

The Just Call Dad Podcast is where real dads have real conversations. Hosted by Coach Sean Patrick, we talk fatherhood, manhood, and the messy middle between who you were and who you’re becoming. No fluff—just stories, advice, and community to help you make today your Day One.

The Just Call Dad Podcast is about connection, community, and conversations with dads who want to be present, intentional, and real. What started after a doctor’s visit where I thought I was dying has turned into a global conversation about fatherhood, manhood, and the messy middle between who we were and who we’re becoming.

In this episode, I talk about navigating the past, present, and future—from the dad-bod moments and receding hairlines to the deeper emotional stuff we don’t always talk about. I share my journey from starting on a borrowed mic to interviewing incredible dads, and realizing that fatherhood isn’t a solo mission—it’s a team sport.

Whether you’re crushing your goals or just trying to make it through the day, this is a space where you can connect, learn, and remember: Today can be your Day One.

30. SEASONS

Ep. 30 - Camp, Seasons, & The Loss of a friend

Warm up - Camp

• We all have places in our lives we go back to at different checkpoints of our lives.

• We need to have spaces like that we can evaluate our progress and be honest with our ups or downs emotionally.

• Find your own “camp” or check in place you can be honest with yourself.

Workout - Seasons

• Life is seasonal so just be you, and be ok to adjust your energy accordingly.

• Don’t search for the past you, because the current you is amazing, even if you are a mess, embrace it.

• Trust that you’re right where you need to be, but don’t be afraid to make a change too.

Cool Down - Losing a friend

• Losing a friend is hard, and as a dad I feel this loss deeply.

• Talk about your feelings, worries, and things like this… don’t bottle it up.

29. VISION

NO Goal BUT Full of Vision

  • Episode 29 (when I recorded it I thought it was 30 hahaha dad fail but so funny... I need more sleep lol) is full of no outline and just talking!
  • Dads need more community, conversations, and connections.
  • I recorded this episode with the kids noise in the background, and that is how some of these episodes should feel. It is the Just Call Dad Podcast for a reason, we are dads who need to figure out how to manage the daily while managing the mess in our minds.
  • The goal of this episode is simple, to show you that we do not always have to have some big goal in life, and this is tough because I am a goal setter. Driven by success, and honestly addicted to winning or competing at things in life. This can either be incredible, or awful, it really comes down to my vision.
  • Vision is different than goals or having a goal.
  • To have vision means you can see the end and the now. You can understand some of the past, and not seek to understand everything.
  • It is like a hidden superpower we all have inside of us, ready, waiting for us to just let go and trust ourselves fully. We need to have media that can replace all the crap out there right now too. So, maybe if we fill up with good stuff, we can find that we trust or believe in ourselvves more each day as dads.
  • I am really prone to dumb rabbit holes of time sucking videos, watching too much "fast food" social media or just wasting the few free moments I get because I am just so tired. My brain needs a break. Maybe the JCD podcast can fill a gap in your consumption time with some positive energy, I know I need that too.

28. TIME

JCD 28: Smart Watch Problems, Stop & Praise, John Wooden’s Wisdom

Warm Up:

I am going no smart watch for a week! Let’s see how I do and how long I make it!

  • Is there something good in your life that may actually be distracting you from living life without distractions today?
  • How do you like to receive praise? Stop and praise (admire & respect) yourself frequently today.

Read more about the one on purpose stop & praise idea I share in the book below.

My book: One On Purpose

Workout:

Stop & Praise your progress today.

  • Are you making today your masterpiece? What are you focused on today?

My book on competing: Designed To Compete

Cool Down:

John Wooden’s 7 life principles are life changing! Is there a coach or teaching like this that has impacted your life too?

  • Take notes on what is informing your belief on yourself today.
  • “Be true to yourself.”

Read this book with your kids to help them get ahead of some of these emotional ideas that can attack us as adults. Can we work together to help our kids form their identity from a place of strength and courage instead of fear? Let’s work together on this challenge! 27. BENCHED

JCD 27: Yep I Got Benched, Find Your Bench, Unlock Your Today

Warm Up:

The song that was stuck in my head was so fun!

I do not own the rights to Forrest Frank’s song but here is the credit:

Forrest Frank, Child of God 2, LIVE YOUR LIFE - GO CHECK OUT THIS ALBUM IF YOU NEED SOME ENCOURAGEMENT!

This song got me thinking about living my life by finding my own bench moment that I need to have a reset on my perspective, maybe you do too!

Read more about the bench idea I share in the book below.

My book: One On Purpose

Workout:

The bench is somewhere you can learn how to compete if you have the right COACH. Who is or better yet, what is your coach? Struggle? Fear? Worry? Or are you listening to the coach that is preparing you to get back into the game and compete better today (tomorrow too).

My book on competing: Designed To Compete

Cool Down:

Perspective is the key to have purpose from the pain you feel. What pain are you feeling today? Do you see the purpose in that pain? Can you pause for a bit today and journal about how you are going to make the bench a place you feel calm, comfortable, and ready to attack life after you regain perspective.

Read this book with your kids to help them get ahead of some of these emotional ideas that can attack us as adults. 26. PURPOSE

JCD 26: Just Call Dad Podcast

Warm Up:

What does it mean for you to be one on purpose? Do you believe that one on purpose action can change your day?

My book: One On Purpose

Workout:

No one can place value on things in your life... the value that you choose is the value that you take with you. So, set your own expectations on what you value so someone else does not tell you what you are worth. Also, we have so many things that compete for our attention as humans (sports too) so I wrote my own battle down in a book.

My book on competing: Designed To Compete

Cool Down:

The emotional value that I found from writing books that were failures ended with me making something that was very special and unique. I want to help every kid, dad, and human have a book (or series to read) that can change the narrative on competing in life. We can flip the script one book at a time, taking identity off of outcome, and place that on the process.
