Welcome to Episode 139 – Knowing Our Limits
Happy birthday to Mindful Men! Yes, this episode coincides with the 2nd birthday of our therapy services, the 1stbirthday of our Facebook Community, and also… 1 year sober for yours truly (yay I did it!).
To mark the occasion, we’re reflecting on what’s happening behind the scenes at Mindful Men – and more importantly – we talk about how knowing our limits can help us pivot from the path we’re on. Hitting the limit has been a theme of my therapy sessions of late (and my personal life), and so I wanted to give it some airtime to normalise the process of recognising when we need to pivot, and then being ok to pivot.
I’m also making a BIG announcement in this episode… so tune in, get mindful with me on our birthday… and spread the love by sharing with a mate!
In this episode, I share:
Key Quotes:
“I got into small business to be more present as a husband and father, but I've been working way too much”
“when it's your own family, it becomes very difficult. And so that got me thinking, okay, what's got to change?”
“I need to take my foot off the gas. I need to pivot.”

Welcome to Episode 138 – Going Loco with Georgia and Amanda
Discussions about mental health can be heavy, draining, challenging and outright depressing. And this is why so many people shy away from them. But they can also be insightful, uplifting and even… funny! In fact humour is a great way to engage with mental health discussions because it lifts the mood on issues that can be weighing us down.
And this is exactly what Georgia and Amanda do with The Going Loco Podcast. Georgia and Amanda are two mates on a mission – talking about all the funny and fucked up things about living with mental health conditions. Georgia (Bipolar 1) and Amanda (Depression) combine humour and humility with deep discussions about the messed up world that mental health challenges bring… and this discussion came at the right moment for me!
As someone who talks mental health every single day, it was refreshing to sit back and crack a few jokes about the loco within my mind. So grab yourself a cuppa, sit back and let’s get loco!
In this episode, Georgia and Amanda share:
Key Quotes:
“It is super hard to watch the disassociation and the depression. Because like when you're flat, you know, like you can see the tumbleweeds.”
“So many men suffer in silence and I feel like they [don’t] always have a space to go to speak”
“I have this mental health condition. I have to take meds. It's not optional”

Welcome to Episode 135 – Redefining success with Matthew Jodouin
When we think of success, we often associate it with success at work. We climb the ladder, or land the big deal… but success is so much more than what we do in our career. Success extends to family, friends, relationships. It is developed over time, and is not simply the end goal – but the growth we achieve throughout the journey.
Helping us to put this into perspective, is a fellow mindful man, Matt Jodouin. Matt is a husband and father, mentor, men’s coach, speaker, and author who guides high-performing men away from the brink of professional burnout towards a state of balance and fulfillment.
Join us as we explore success through a personal development lens; and learn how taking off the mask, getting vulnerable and authentic can lead to success at a whole new level.
In this episode, Matt shares:
Key quotes:
"Success as a father is being a safe place for my kids to come."
"Success in marriage is having a genuine connection and being a safe place for each other."
"Real success comes back to … learning to enjoy the process and be happy now."

Welcome to Episode 134 - Hope (Hold On Pain Ends)
Over the last 6-12 months, there have been a whole range of things going on that have been slowly weighing me down. And it all came to a head recently after a phone conversation that triggered me big time. The phone call had me feeling helpless, and I broke down. I could no longer hold things together, and the emotions all came out.
But as the tears dried, I started to reflect on Hope. A good friend of mine Kerrie Atherton always talks about Hope being defined as Hold On, Pain Ends. I needed this reminder this week, and it enabled me to reflect on where I was at, but also where I was going. So join me as I talk about regaining Hope when all seems lost.
In this episode, I share:
· The concept of hope
· Housing, financial and business stress
· Dealing with a toxic workplace
· Supporting loved ones through health challenges
· Hold On, Pain ends
· Why talking helps
Key Quotes
"Hold on, pain ends"
“I'm sharing this because I want to reflect on it and sharing and verbalizing these challenges gets it out of your head”
“I'm rediscovering hope with different tools”

Welcome to Episode 133 - Life as a Trans Man with Carlos Munez
Imagine being born into a body that didn’t feel right. On the outside, your adopted mother called you her “Incan princess”, but on the inside you were a boy wanting to become a man. This was the experience of Carlos Munez.
Carlos was born in Peru, and moved to the UK after being adopted. This in itself can raise significant questions about one’s place in the world, and for Carlos this was amplified by questions about his gender identity too. Carlos joins me to get mindful about life as a trans man; from questioning his identity, to coming out, transitioning and now life as a husband and father.
After listening to this episode, make sure you check out Carlos’ TedX talk (link below). I for one was left inspired by Carlos’ journey, and am thankful that he has also shared some websites that can help those needing support with gender identity.

Grief is a complex topic, and one that is often associated with the loss of a loved one. However grief can show up in different ways, and doesn’t have to associated with death. And like our mental health, no two people experience grief in the same way.
Helping us unpack this BIG topic is licensed therapist Katie Rössler. Katie shares her personal experience of losing a parent and experiencing multiple miscarriages. We discuss hidden grief and how men and women express is differently. We also talk about how therapy can help us to grow through grief, and the valuable work Katie does through her therapy and podcast – The Balance Code.
Key points
In this episode, Katie shares:
Key quotes
“We've all felt grief. We have just only seen it as mourning the sadness and the loss of a person”
“the losses completely rocked my world, totally changed who I am, completely shifted my identity”
“we got to get on our little boat and go off to our own island and have solitude. But we have to be very careful that that time on that island doesn't become isolation”

Welcome to Episode 131 - Neurodiversity and Autism with Caitlin Hughes and Teena Mogler
Neurodiversity is becoming increasingly recognised in our community, and I’m hearing more and more stories of adults getting late diagnosed Autism and ADHD (often after our children have been diagnosed). What I didn’t realise is that other conditions fall under the neurodiversity umbrella – including OCD!
So this week we’re exploring neurodiversity and what it means to have a neurodiversity affirming therapy practice – with a specific focus on Autism. And helping me unpack this huge topic is Accredited Mental Health Social Workers Caitlin Hughes and Teena Mogler. Caitlin and Teena are lived experience therapists, and provide a great insight into how we as practitioners can position ourselves to provide neurodiversity affirming practices to our clients.
But if you’re not a therapist, but live with Autism (or even ADHD as we talk about this), make sure you tune in. You’ll hear about some great therapeutic approaches that may be helpful to you!
Key points
In this episode Caitlin and Teena share:
Key quotes
"Neurodiversity is about approaching different brains and understanding them through our diversity lens."
"Neurodiversity affirming practice is about working with the neurodivergent person and not causing harm."
“The issue with saying someone's high functioning is that it's kind of invalidating the fact that they have a disability and they do have support needs."

Welcome to Episode 129 - Mens Health Week
June 10th-16th is Mens Health Week here in Australia, and coincides with Mens Mental Health Month across the globe. And to promote these initiatives across the globe, I thought I would chat about the most commonly asked question I receive – “how do I get this man I know into therapy?”
This is a really challenging question, because the answer isn’t simple. Its not easy when the man in your life isn’t ready for therapy. And theres a range of reasons for this, including shame, stigma, not having the words, toxic masculinity… the list goes on! But despite the challenge, I also have a solution. So join me as we explore this commonly asked question and hopefully inspire you – or someone you know – to start talking about their mental health!
In this episode I share:
Key quotes
“Better blokes make for a better world.”
“Therapy doesn't have to be you going in there, bawling your eyes out.”
“Stop hiding from yourself. Listen to those who are asking you to get help.”

Welcome to Episode 128 - Private practice social work with Tammy Roche
There’s immense freedom that comes with starting a small business, but that freedom comes at a cost. You’re wearing multiple hats from doing the therapy to marketing, to admin, finances, legal, health and safety… and so much more. The time freedom you yearned for coming into private practice is often exchanged for longer hours, fear and the unknown.
And this might sound daunting (and trust me it is!), but it’s also rewarding. Watching something blossom from nothing but your hard work gives you much more satisfaction than working for big corporations. I’ve been there before, and whilst I am working harder and longer in private practice; I doubt I could ever go back to a standard 9-5.
Join me as I explore private practice social work with fellow social worker Tammy Roche. Tammy shares her story of coming into private practice and how her entrepreneurial mindset has seen her succeed with businesses in both Australia and Canada. It’s a great episode for those social workers (but anyone in the helping professions) seeking a move into private practice.
In this episode Tammy shares:
Key quotes
“social work to me is me living and doing life, doing work with my values first, leading the way”
“who is it somebody said that quote, shame disappears when your stories can be heard in safe places”
“how can you strengthen other people's voices if you don't strengthen your own first?”

Welcome to Episode 124 - Organisational Psychology with Clifford Morgan
Have you ever wondered why some workplaces are amazing places to be a part of, whilst others simply… suck? I have, and I’ve experienced both types of workplaces. And what I’ve come to understand is that workplace culture has a big part to play in how well an organisation operates.
Great workplaces have inspiring leaders, engaged employees, shared values and strong work ethics. They’re adaptable, efficient, and effective; but they don’t forget the human side of doing business. The challenge is how do we arrive at this workplace utopia – and helping us do this are Organisational Psychologists.
Joining me this week is Clifford Morgan from Lumian Consulting. Clifford served in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) for over 17 years before moving into organisational psychology. Clifford now combines his military discipline and focus with psychology to support workplaces to thrive. He’s also the author of the Coaching Leader, and provides great insight into workplace culture, values, conflict and teamwork.
Key points
In this episode Clifford shares:
· Understanding Organisational Psychology
· Addressing Workplace Challenges and Leadership Dynamics
· Exploring Context-Based Leadership
· The Balance of Flexibility and Responsibility in the Workplace
· The Role of Organisational Values in Conflict Resolution
· Leveraging Team Dynamics for Success
Key quotes
“A workplace that doesn't suck is probably where the leader’s expectations are met by the staff and the staff's expectations are met by the leaders.”
“the mechanics are the things that the team does … the dynamics is how they go about it”
“The primary benefit of [team profiling] … is the conversation that it sparks rather than the profile itself.”

Welcome to Episode 123 - Is this helpful?
Over the last few months, my mental health has been declining. Anxiety, stress and depression have been having a party, and this has had me re-visit my self-care and support systems.
One of the most crucial supports I’ve had is my business wellness coach. He has helped me to reflect on my thoughts, feelings and behaviours and ask myself “is this helpful?”. The more I ask myself this question, the easier it is for me to switch off my emotional brain, and switch on my rational brain. This switch has improved my problem solving skills during my heightened moments.
So let me share this tool with you, so you too can regain control of negative thoughts, feelings or behaviours.
Key points
In this episode I share:
Key quotes
“Simon, is this helpful?”
“this is a powerful phrase that we can use to challenge these negative mindsets, or these feelings that we're having, or the behaviours that we're having, that are no longer serving us”
“We're switching on the rational brain. And so we can start problem solving here”

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a complex system for people living with disability to navigate. It’s not just about getting funding for disability supports. In this episode Hannah shares:

“you taught me that I have choice and control”
“I also work with the LGBTIQ+ community and in particular, transgender participants, because although I am cis, I do understand a lot more about it than most support coordinators”

Trigger Warning: Assault, Abuse, Rape, Mental Health, Trauma
Welcome to Episode 121 - I Survived A Hate Crime with David Keck
One of the few things in life that doesn’t discriminate is trauma. And this week’s episode explores trauma and recovery with David Keck.
David is the host of the Surviving Podcast, and he bravely shares how he survived a violent gay hate crime. He describes the events of the night that changed his life forever, including the abuse he received, the memory loss, the court case, media, and the impacts off all of this on his mental and physical health.
David’s story is raw, vulnerable and powerful. It explores notions of masculinity and sexuality; and despite the profound impact this event has had on David’s life, he shares how he regained control with hope and healing (and just a little bit of therapy!).
Key points
In this episode David shares:
Key quotes
“David, if hell is filled with people like you, it can't be that bad of a place”
“A hate crime is if someone picks you out, points you out, targets you based on religion, gender, sexual orientation”
“I'm here right now and running my mouth right now because I refuse to let him win”

Trigger warning: Mental Health, Suicide, Drugs and Alcohol
Welcome to Episode 120. Running for mental health with Lachy Cameron
Our mental health journey often starts long before we recognise it. This is why therapists ask you about your childhood. It helps set the scene for how you’re thinking, feeling and behaving as an adult. And this week’s guest shares how his childhood impacted his mental health right into adulthood.
Lachy Cameron is a man on a mission. He shares his story of feeling abandoned by his father, and how alcohol and drugs helped mask the pain. He also shares how his house of cards fell down, and how this prompted him to make positive changes in his life… including learning to run long distances!
In May 2024, Lachy is running over 1000km from Brisbane to Sydney for mental health. He’s doing it to promote awareness of mental health, and raise money for charity Heart On My Sleeve. Join us as we explore how running has helped Lachy turn a rock bottom moment into inspiration for all of us.
Key points
In this episode Lachy shares:
Key quotes
"All I ever wanted to be was someone else. I never wanted to be myself because I didn't think I was good enough.”
"I went through my life and I always believed I was destined for greatness. And I think I lent on that to assume something was just going to happen in my life.”
"For so long, vulnerability has been disguised as weakness when it's really a strength."
