In this episode, Gene & Matt take on the concept of intention vs. perception. We talk about how it can create rifts or misunderstandings in interpersonal communication, and why apologizing on account of intent may come across more as dismissive than reparative. We brainstorm other ways to approach those conversations to move to a place of aligned understanding and growth in our relationships. We discuss the idea that our perceptions in day-to-day exchanges are heavily influenced by our past experiences, our environment, as well as what we’re thinking and feeling in that moment. And we extend this line of logic to discussion about bias and prejudice when having conversations related to cultural identity and social justice. The social environments we’ve grown up in inadvertently contribute to those biases, and being attentive to others’ perception of our bias can help us to show up more inclusively in the world.
