Being a two-time HBCU alumna, active member of her sorority, co-founder and COO of an Atlanta-based company serving predominantly Black health needs, and lecturer at the #1-ranked HBCU in the country, Dr. James knows a thing or two about managing multiple projects and put them into this tool. On today’s episode, we meet Kiersten Brydie is a writer, fitness instructor, and wellness content creater based in Atlanta, GA. She earned her 200 HR yoga certification from Core Power Yoga in 2021 and her mat Pilates certification from Power Pilates in 2023. Guided by the motto: “living well, inside and out,” Kiersten is passionate about encouraging women of color to view wellness as a standard and not a luxury. She uses her knowledge to build online communities of women who share resources around mindfulness, movement, food and everything in between. Her Tik Tok boasts a nearly 28k+ followers and growing.

Kiersten is the author of “Shedding to Grow,” a coming-of-age collection of poems and short stories. On the outside cover of her book, she leaves a note she hopes to continually live by - “this is the good I bring into the world, and it, into me.”

EP 51: Yoga Nidra Meditation Practice: A Data-Backed Path to Deep Relaxation and Improved Mental Health

On today's episode, I share one of my favorite guided meditations, the practice of yoga nidra. If you’re driving, I highly recommend that you pause and return to this episode when you can give your undivided attention as this is a total body relaxation technique.


Yoga Nidra, often known as "Yogic Sleep," is a meditation and relaxation technique that has been supported by compelling statistics showcasing its remarkable benefits for relaxation, anxiety reduction, and depression management.


Again, it’s recommended that you listen to this episode when you have time to slow down and relax. Do NOT listen while operating a vehicle. 


Here are a few reasons why I love this particular meditation practice:


Relaxation: Numerous studies have demonstrated that Yoga Nidra is a highly effective method for relaxation. Research from the National Library of Medicine has shown that consistent practice significantly reduces stress levels, with as much as a 44% decrease in cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. This makes it an invaluable practice for individuals dealing with high levels of stress, sleep disturbances, or tension-related ailments.

Anxiety: Statistics further confirm the effectiveness of Yoga Nidra in reducing anxiety. A study published in the Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine revealed that participants who practiced Yoga Nidra experienced a 56% reduction in anxiety levels after just eight weeks. This indicates its potential to offer substantial relief for individuals grappling with anxiety disorders.

Depression: Yoga Nidra has also demonstrated promise in alleviating symptoms of depression. In a clinical trial published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, participants who engaged in regular Yoga Nidra sessions reported a 45% improvement in their depressive symptoms. This suggests that Yoga Nidra can be a valuable component of a comprehensive approach to managing and mitigating the effects of depression.
