— BIOGRAPHY —
Annalisa C. Chang is Director of Orchestras at Roswell High School in Roswell, Georgia. Prior to this position, she served as Associate Professor of Music and Director of Music Education at Clayton State University. At Clayton State, Dr. Chang taught general music education courses, string methods, music for early childhood, music appreciation, and supervised student teachers. She was named the 2022-2023 Gene Hatfield Teacher of the Year by the CSU College of Arts and Sciences and received the 2023 Pearson Excellence in Higher Education Award in the Transformational Thought Leadership category. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she served as the Director of the CSU Music Preparatory School.
Her research on string teacher education, the inclusion of students with disabilities in string classrooms, and equitable access to music education has been presented at state, national, and international music education conferences. Her work has been published in the String Research Journal, the Florida Music Director, and the ArkMEA Journal.
As a clinician, Dr. Chang has presented sessions on teaching students with disabilities, string education, classroom management, and traditional (folk) music instruction in the schools at many state in-service conferences, the American String Teachers Association National Conference, and the Midwest Clinic.
Dr. Chang holds degrees in Music Education from Florida State University (Ph.D), and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (M.M., B.M) where she was a North Carolina Teaching Fellow.

A talented and versatile musician, Nathaniel F. Parker has conducted professional orchestras in the United States, Peru, Russia, Poland, England, and the Czech Republic. Equally at home working with professionals and training future generations of musicians, Dr. Parker is Director of Orchestral Studies and Associate Professor of Music at the Kennesaw State University Bailey School of Music. Concurrent appointments include the positions of Associate Conductor of the Georgia Symphony Orchestra, the Dr. Bobbie Bailey Artistic Director of the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestras (GYSO), and Music Director and Conductor of the GYSO Symphony. Parker’s work as a conductor, scholar, and educator has been recognized by the New World Symphony (FL), Tanglewood Music Center, the American Prize, the College Music Society (CMS), the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) and the College Orchestra Directors Association (CODA), among others. He is also the recipient of a Citation of Excellence in Teaching from the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association. Parker earned graduate degrees in orchestral conducting from Michigan State University (DMA) and Bowling Green State University (MM). He also earned a BM in Bassoon Performance, magna cum laude, from Arizona State University. His mentors and teachers include Raphael Jiménez, Leon Gregorian, Stephen Osmond, and Emily Freeman Brown (conducting), and Jeffrey Lyman and Catherine Lewis (bassoon).

Abigail is the orchestra director at Eversole Run Middle School in Dublin City Schools. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baldwin Wallace University in 2019. Before joining Dublin City Schools in 2025, Abigail taught 5th–12th grade orchestra in Perrysburg Schools in Perrysburg, Ohio, where her ensembles consistently earned superior ratings at OMEA Large Group contests. Her groups also performed at the OMEA State Professional Development Conference and the 2024 National Orchestra Festival in Louisville, Kentucky, as part of the ASTA National Convention.
In addition to her work in the classroom, Abigail is an active performer and conductor. She has conducted the Baldwin Wallace University Middle School Strings Camp, Ohio State Morning Strings Camp and actively performs her cello throughout the state of Ohio. Abigail is passionate about providing inclusive, high-quality music education and fostering a lifelong love of music in her students.

His music has been performed by groups ranging from professional symphony orchestras to elementary schools in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Sydney Opera House, Toronto Centre for the Arts, and many more. As a conductor, he has performed in nearly all 50 states with notable engagements including “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, United States Air Force Band, performances at the Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, Maryborough Music Conference (Australia), numerous state ASTA conferences, Teatro dell’Aquila (Italy), and others. He is an elected member of the American Bandmasters Association and won the 2024 Outstanding Contributor Award presented by the Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity. Currently, he is Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred Music and MakeMusic.

Perry Holbrook serves as the Artistic Director of Orchestras at Walton High School. Over the past 25 years he has guided the program’s growth from 130 to more than 300 students. Under his leadership, Walton ensembles have earned multiple invitations to perform at The Midwest Clinic, the ASTA National Conference, and the Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference, as well as completing several European concert tours.
Beyond his own program, Dr. Holbrook is a sought-after guest conductor and clinician. He has led state, regional, and national honor orchestras and has presented sessions at major professional gatherings, including The Midwest Clinic, ASTA, the Georgia Music Educators Association, and the Texas Music Educators Association. He also teaches AP Music Theory at Walton.
In addition to his teaching and conducting, Dr. Holbrook is an accomplished composer. His original works, including Someday, Never Summer Mountain, Acadian Solstice, and Bear on the Square, have been recognized as JW Pepper Editor’s Choice selections and are performed by ensembles nationwide. Notably, Someday has been featured by all-state orchestras and at state music educator conventions, reflecting his commitment to creating music that is both pedagogically meaningful and artistically engaging for developing orchestra students. Dr. Holbrook is looking forward to four new releases in 2026.

In this episode, we welcome H. Marc Kaufman, orchestra director at Lovinggood Middle School in Cobb County, Georgia. After a several successful decades teaching band, Marc made the transition to strings. His previous collaborative work with full symphony orchestra and chorus concerts sparked his passion for orchestra, leading him to his current role.
Marc’s career spans nearly four decades and a wide variety of experiences: science teacher, textbook writer, content developer for Turner Networks, curriculum and technology coordinator for the Georgia Department of Education, band director, music and movement technician with marching ensembles, and now orchestra director. He shares how this unique path has shaped his teaching, his perspective on building successful programs, and the lessons he’s learned along the way.

— BIOGRAPHY —
Marc Kaufman is in his second year as the orchestra director at Lovinggood Middle School in Cobb County, Georgia. Prior to making the move to strings, he spent the previous ten years as the Director of Bands at Couch Middle School in Grayson, Georgia. In his tenure at CMS, Marc doubled the size of the program. His ensembles consistently earned superior ratings at GMEA performance evaluations, and were an invited ensemble at the Music For All Southeastern Regional Concert Festival at Georgia State University in 2024. In addition to his conducting responsibilities, Marc also arranged many pieces for the CMS Ram Jam, concert band classes, and most importantly, the full symphony orchestra with chorus concerts held every December. It was his experience with the collaborative December concerts that got him started on the road to being an orchestra director.
In a career that has spanned nearly four decades, Marc has been a science teacher, textbook writer, content developer for Turner Networks, curriculum/technology coordinator for the Georgia Department of Education, a high school and middle school band director, a music and movement technician for high school bands, DCI and DCA Drum Corps, and is currently in his second year as an orchestra director.
Marc holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Middle Grades Education from Kennesaw State University and a Master of Arts in Music Education Degree from Piedmont University.
Marc and Jackie Kaufman live in Sugar Hill, Georgia with their beloved Australian Cattle Dog Maddie, and are close to their three children (all teachers!), two daughters-in law, two grandchildren, five granddogs and one grandcat.

Ashley Culley is the director of orchestras at Dodgen Middle School in Cobb County, Georgia. She has been an orchestra director for 25 years with the last 19 years at Dodgen. While at Dodgen, the orchestra program has grown from 190 students to 380 students. She is a Cobb County Teacher Leader for middle school orchestras. Her prior teaching experiences include Kell High School in Cobb County, Georgia and Milton High School, Northwestern Middle School and several elementary schools in Fulton County, Georgia.
Mrs.Culley earned a Bachelor of Music Education with Performance Certificate from the University of South Carolina. While at USC, she worked in the USC String Project. She earned a Master of Music in Cello Performance and a Master of Arts in String Pedagogy from the Ohio State University. Mrs.Culley is an active performer, clinician and adjudicator. As an adjudicator and clinician, she has worked with orchestras in Georgia, Ohio and South Carolina.

Taniesha M. Pooser is a dedicated music educator, conductor, and administrator with over sixteen years of experience in music education, including more than a decade in public school orchestra instruction. She has served as an orchestra director and county lead orchestra teacher in Gwinnett County Public Schools, Georgia, where her exceptional work was recognized in 2022 when she was named the GCPS Middle School Teacher of the Year.
A passionate advocate for equity and excellence in the arts, Mrs. Pooser served as a member at large with the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). She also served as the chair for the inaugural Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access committee. In March 2023, Mrs. Pooser was honored with ASTA’s prestigious Presidential Award for Outstanding Service, recognizing her exemplary commitment to the organization and the broader music education community.
Now serving as an assistant principal, Mrs. Pooser continues to influence the field of music education through her leadership. She remains active as a guest clinician, conductor, presenter, and adjudicator at regional and state orchestral events. Additionally, she serves as the conductor of the Heart Youth Orchestra in Athens, Georgia, where she continues to inspire the next generation of young musicians.

Mr. Lestina started his teaching career in Danville, Illinois where he taught orchestra at Southview Middle School and Danville High School. In 1986, Mr. Lestina accepted the Orchestra Director position at Libertyville High School, Libertyville, Illinois. The Symphony Orchestra was invited to perform at the Midwest Clinic in 1991 and again in 1996. In addition, the LHS Orchestras traveled extensively, including three tours to Europe. In the fall of 2000, Mr. Lestina accepted the position of Fine Arts Supervisor and Orchestra Director at the new school in District 128, Vernon Hills High School, where the string enrollment eventually grew to 150 students in three orchestras. Mr. Lestina retired from Vernon Hills High School in June of 2013 and currently serves as adjunct faculty in Music Education at DePaul University and VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. In addition, Mr. Lestina currently serves on the Advisory Board of The Midwest Clinic and moderates the New Music Reading Session for Orchestra. Mr. Lestina is very active as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator and has served as guest conductor for many of the ILMEA District Orchestras at both the Middle School and High School levels. Mr. Lestina conducted the ILMEA All-State Orchestra for the 2014 Conference in Peoria, Illinois. Mac Mayer is Orchestra Director at Whiteaker Middle School and feeder elementary schools in Keizer, Oregon. He holds undergraduate degrees in Music Performance and Music Education from The Ohio State University, studying with Dr. Rober Gillespie and Dr. Paul Robinson in Music Education and Double Bass, respectively. He holds a Master of Music Education from the University of Kansas, studying with Dr. Jacob Dakon, as well as Dr. Martin Bergee and Dr. Paul Popiel. Prior to teaching in the Salem-Keizer School District Mac taught orchestra in Olathe, Kansas, as well as Cobb County, Georgia and Pickerington, Ohio.
Mac Mayer is a certified orchestra adjudicator for the state of Oregon, and works frequently as an adjudicator, clinician, and conductor throughout the state and region. Mac serves as Co-Chair for the Oregon Middle School All-State Orchestra and is on staff with Salem Youth Symphony as conductor of the Amadeus Orchestra.

— BIOGRAPHY —
Harrison is currently the Director of Orchestras at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Cobb County, Georgia. He is currently in his ninth year of teaching, after having a full career as a professional musician. He has previously directed orchestras as Simpson Middle School and Sprayberry High School, all within Cobb County. His orchestras have consistently scored superior rating at LGPE. He has had the honor of presenting sessions on cello pedagogy, and has performed as a soloist with several orchestras and choirs at the annual Georgia Music educators Association conference. Harrison received his BA from Georgia State University and his Masters in Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon University for cello performance. He has played in various professional ensembles including the Atlanta Symphony, Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet, Greenville Symphony, and many others. As a performer, Harrison has had the opportunity to play around the world in over 10 countries, including performances in Italy, Monaco, and a solo tour in China. In addition to his symphonic work, Harrison is an active member of the Atlanta music scene, doing studio work for films, games, and performing artists. Harrison has a robust private studio, with students consistently performing at All State and Honor Orchestra, attending summer institutes such as Brevard, Franklin Pond, Suwanee, and Interlochen, as well as universities such as Peabody Conservatory, Indiana University, Cincinnati Conservatory, and the Cleveland Institute of Music.— REFERRAL LINKS —

— BIOGRAPHY —
Annie Ray currently serves as both the Orchestra Director and Performing Arts Department Chair at Annandale High School (AHS) in the Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) system. Annie is an advocate for providing universal access to quality music education and is known for founding and developing creative opportunities to make music accessible to students of all demographics.
Her establishment of the Fairfax Arts Coalition for Education Parent Orchestra annually teaches about 225 caregivers in FCPS to learn to play their child’s instrument and provides mentorship to upcoming music teachers. Annie also founded the Crescendo Orchestra program to make Orchestra curriculum accessible to students with significant developmental or intellectual disabilities. In April 2020, TEDx invited Annie to give the talk, The Sounds of Success, based on her approach in the classroom and what it means to meet all students where they are at.
Annie is a highly sought after keynote speaker and headliner at over 50 music and general education conferences from 2023-2025 alone, regular guest lecturer and artist-in-residence at the collegiate level, and an impactful performing arts advocate at the state and national level. Her accolades include being named the 2024 GRAMMY Music Educator Award winner, Yamaha “40 Under 40” class of 2025, recipient of the Dr. Alice M. Hammel Inclusion in Music Education Award, and a four time Teacher of the Year winner including the 2023 FCPS Outstanding Secondary Teacher of the Year for her work with historically resilient communities and equity in education. Annie is the co-founder of Motherhood and Music Education and is a member of the StringRise professional development team.
Her mentors include Dennis Langevin, Brian Coatney, Dr. Elizabeth Chappell, Dr. Jaymee Haefner, and Naoko Nakamura. She is an active professional harpist, proud University of North Texas alumna, and currently resides in Arlington, Virginia with her husband Dr. Irving Ray and their daughters Eloise and Millie. Annie is an adventurer at heart, and her biggest bucket list item is to one day win The Amazing Race.

We discuss her work expanding access to string education through community partnerships, her leadership with the Newark-Granville Youth Symphony, and her research. A passionate educator and clinician, Dr. Lofdahl shares a few tips for string teachers and some valuable insights.
— BIOGRAPHY —
Dr. Heather Lofdahl is Assistant Professor of Music Education at The Ohio State University, where she directs the string education program. In addition, she serves as Music Director of the Newark-Granville Youth Symphony and music education specialist for Play Us Forward, a community partnership aimed at increasing access to string instruction for underserved students. Dr. Lofdahl is the recipient of the 2025 Ohio State School of Music Distinguished Teaching Award.
Dr. Lofdahl is published in the String Research Journal and American String Teachers Journal. She is an active member of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) and the National Association for Music Education. Through these organizations as well as the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the International Society for Music Education, Dr. Lofdahl has presented research and pedagogy sessions at the Symposium for Music Teacher Education; International Society for Music Education Conference (Glasgow, Scotland and Helsinki, Finland); American String Teachers Association National Conference; and various state conferences. Her research is focused on equity and access in music education, best practices of outstanding string teachers, and practice behaviors of string players. In addition, Dr. Lofdahl serves on the ASTA Content Committee and is President-Elect of the Ohio String Teachers Association.
Dr. Lofdahl holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music Education and Viola Performance from Augustana College, Master of Music degrees in Music Education and Viola Performance from the University of North Carolina Greensboro, and a PhD in Music Education from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She is an active guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States and abroad.

American conductor Tamara Dworetz is driven by her belief in the power of classical music to inspire, spread joy and enrich the human experience. Dworetz's 2025-26 season includes debuts with the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestra of Northwest Arkansas (SONA). Her 2024-25 season includes debuts with the Cincinnati Symphony, Atlanta Ballet (The Rite of Spring & The Nutcracker), Sarasota Orchestra and Boulder Philharmonic. She was one of three conductors selected to participate in Leonard Slatkin's 80th Birthday Celebration with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Tamara is the Artistic Director & Conductor of the Georgia Philharmonic, which performs five subscription concerts a year, in addition to special events like World Wrestling Entertainment, DragonCon & Gospel Goes Classical. Recently, Tamara conducted her first staged opera, Bizet's Carmen.
Tamara is featured in a Netflix documentary called 'Maestra', directed by Maggie Contreras and produced by David Letterman. The film centers around 5 conducting participants in the 2022 La Maestra Conducting Competition and Academy for Women Conductors in Paris, France and has been highlighted by the NY Times, LA Times, CBS National News as well as international film festivals, including Tribeca, where it was premiered. In the 2022 competition, Tamara was the only US-born conductor and earned a spot as one of 6 semi-finalists.
A devoted music educator, Tamara’s musical beginnings took place in the Atlanta public school system and she is passionate about fostering enriching musical experiences for K-12 and pre-professional musicians. Tamara is Director of Orchestral Studies at Georgia State University and Charles Thomas Wurm Distinguished Professor in Instrumental Music. She has served guest conducting residencies at University of Texas Butler School of Music, Boston University School of Music, SUNY Fredonia School of Music, and the Longy Conservatory Orchestra at Bard College. She has guest conducted All-State Orchestras in Texas, Indiana, Virginia, Colorado, Georgia and Washington (All-Northwest) and worked with the Atlanta, Austin, Emory and Boston Youth Orchestras as well as the Atlanta Music Project. She has led conducting workshops for music educators (GMEA Conference) as well as with young musicians (ASO TDP program).
