For the God episode of the raptor jesus cult, I had to talk to blochead.
blochead is arguably the most recognizable commenter name on Stereogum (The argument being it's actually me). Then again, I cannot call Father John Misty's Josh Tillman a best friend.
Nevertheless, bloc & I are friends. This episode is all over the place and covers a lot of ground in its runtime. Here is a laundry list of bands and topics covered in this conversation:
Yves Tumor, the Pixies, the Killers, Bruce Springsteen, Hootie & The Blowfish, Phoebe Bridgers, Phoenix, Kendrick Lamar, Vince Staples, Shout Out Louds, Let's Eat Grandma, Charly Bliss, the 1975, The Rolling Stones vs. The Beatles, The Cure, the entire genre of Metal and the death of Arcade Fire.
Also, Doris Montgomery wrote a screenplay?
saturnian is a veteran Stereogum commenter who is one of the only people on this planet that loves The Field as much as I do.
On this episode we spend the bulk of our conversation ranking The Field's flawless discography. The ranking starts about 30 minutes into the episode.
Before the ranking, I talk to saturnian about his Stereogum origins and music production.
In 2023, my goal is to have conversations with Stereogum commenters.
For this episode, I talk to the person responsible for creating the raptor jesus cult theme song: Krillin.
This conversation took place December 18, 2022 after the World Cup Final Match. Topics discussed include:
Krillin's Stereogum origin story
SZA's S.O.S.
The best and worst albums of 2022
This is the final episode in the opening trilogy beginning with ep2 - 2001 echoes.
It is another playlist discussion episode, except this playlist was designed to synchronize with the entire movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Instructions to view involve queuing up the playlist found on the raptorjesus311 spotify (ad free needed): https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2m0PeooHmHFv6Xzfr6Bc1Z?si=b102cee074744b9d
Start the playlist at the 4 second mark at the beginning of a hard copy of 2001: A Space Odyssey. A streamed copy will not work. Either purchase a downloaded copy through iTunes or use a physical copy. Turn the volume down on 2001: A Space Odyssey and listen to the playlist.
Further instructions are outlined in the episode as well as a detailed discussion of this playlist's genesis. Artists and songs are analyzed along with their synchronizations to the movie as well as personal meanings to raptor jesus.
Remember: owning a copy of 2001: A Space Odyssey is required for cult membership.
This is the first of many playlist episode discussions. This playlist can be found on the Spotify profile for raptorjesus311 here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3igESbOCNg9K7lKiawJvEY?si=6922f337e2d14f5c
This episode discusses the creation, inspiration, sequencing and personal meaning of this playlist.
This episode discusses the audio/visual synchronization that occurs when watching the final scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey (Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite) with the audio of Pink Floyd's song "Echoes" from the album Meddle.
The first half is a live reaction to the sync in real time. The second half is a look into the history of Stanley Kubrick and Pink Floyd as well as what makes this one of the most amazing movie/music combinations of all time.
How to synchronize 2001 echoes:
Find a copy of 2001: A Space Odyssey (physical copy, downloaded copy, streaming copy) and pause the movie at the beginning of the Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite title card. Then turn the volume down on the TV, computer or application playing the movie.
Then queue up the song "Echoes" by Pink Floyd from the album Meddle and pause it at the beginning with the volume up.
Play both the movie and the song at the same time. You will know the the two are in sync if the second ping from the song "Echoes" hits about one second before the Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite title card disappears on the screen.
Reminder: owning a copy of 2001: A Space Odyssey is required for cult membership.
