S6E7 Patriarcha and Locke

In this episode, Kelsie and Brooke discuss the legacy of John Locke: democracy for patriarchs, not people. In dismantling absolute monarchy, Locke left the family intact, subjecting women, children, chattel, enslaved people, animals, and all dependents to the whim of the patriarch of the home. With little structural resources to subvert his will, dependents remained oppressed in an era where human rights were “self-evident.” Let’s get into this!

S6E3 Suffragist Margaret Brent (1601-1671)

They want to repeal the 19th Amendment. In this episode, Kelsie and Brooke examine the real life of a colonial woman in Maryland who met all the hallmarks of earning the right to vote: she was a landowner, trusted by the Colonial Governor, a talented lawyer who never lost a case, and the head of her household– still they denied her the vote. Anti-suffrage was never about efficiency or meritocracy– it was about controlling women. Let’s back the timeline up for women’s landownership, self advocacy, and efficacy in law and business with the incredible Margaret Brent.

Forty years, five children, other careers, and countless books read later, they founded Quite Literally Books, a publishing company devoted to bringing awareness to ought-to-be-in-print books by women authors and sparking essential conversations about the American literary canon: Who is included? And who gets to decide?
