Summary

Peevy walks off to talk to Goose while Cliff and Jenny kiss. Bystanders admire the Gee Bee on a sunny Sunday morning in front of the Bull Dog Cafe.

Patsy, with a saucepan on her head, chases a boy in a fedora around the front of the Gee Bee.

“Rocketeer to the rescue!” she shouts. Patsy laughs, and continues the chase.

The camera rises above the scene. A crowd of people surround the Gee Bee. Malcolm chats with Jenny and Cliff; Millie, hands on hips, looks at the Gee Bee’s left wing. Peevy continues to scan the plans of the X-3, Skeets chats with a local taking a photo, Goose walks to the front of the plane, and shakes hands with Cliff. Cliff then hugs Jenny again.

The scene fades to CREDITS…

Minute 104: The Look on Your Face

Summary

Hughes’s limo backs on to the Encino Road as Cliff watches him leave. Behind Secord, a crowd admires his new GeeBee Model R.

Cliff waves to the limo as it drives away, then turns back to his friends gathered around the GeeBee.

“Isn’t it pretty?” says Millie.

Cliff stands next to Peevy and gestures at the plane.  “Peevy, I-,” says Cliff, “I didn’t even get a chance to thank him!”

Peevy shakes his head. “You don’t have to, son,” replies Peevy,  “He saw the look on your face.” Cliff smiles.

“Cliff, I have something for you, too!” says Jenny.  “Actually, it’s for Peevy.”  She hands Peevy his handmade, stolen schematics for the Cirrus X-3 that she grabbed from Sinclair’s secret room.

“Oh, no!” says Peevy, laughing. Jenny and Cliff also laugh, then Cliff draws Jenny close to him.

“What was that line again?” asks Cliff. “O, my Prince…”

“Would that you drink of my lips…” begins Jenny.

“Thanks,” says Cliff, “I don’t mind if I do.” Both smile, and kiss.

“Clifford,” says Peevy, “Take a look at this here. Here, look! I bet if we increase the manifold pressure up about twenty-five percent, so then switch the fuel-to-air ratio, just favoring the fuel, just a little, so…” Peevy notices Cliff and Jenny are too busy kissing to pay any attention to him. Peevy looks around to see who else he can talk to about this idea. “Hey, Goose!’ he shouts, “Do you wanna take a — take a look here…”  and walks off-camera.

Minute 103: The Closest I’ll Ever Get

Guest Host: Martt Clupper

Martt was raised around a wide range of aviation influences. With an airline pilot dad who was a sailplane pilot and skydiver, he quickly became an fan of everything aviation oriented.

After unofficially learning to fly at 13, he soloed a glider on his 14th birthday, then powered aircraft at 16. As a junior in High School he started building a homebuilt airplane.

Currently, he’s restoring a 1959 Piper Super Cub, an airplane built using the same principles of construction as seen in the Gee Bee racer.

Martt’s been a Rocketeer fan since before the movie was released, having read various articles about the film before it was in theaters. Favorite quote : “the rock-a-who?”

Summary

Howard Hughes is standing next to a GeeBee Model R he’s just taxied to a stop in front of the Bulldog Cafe. A small crowd from the diner has gathered around the aircraft. Hughes is talking to Jenny and Cliff.

“Would you excuse us for just a moment?” says Howard to Jenny.

“Of course,” says Jenny. Howard puts his hand on Cliff’s shoulder as they walk away from Jenny.  They take a few steps, then Hughes faces Secord.

“I’ve been meaning to ask you,” says Howard in a quiet voice, “What was it like — strapping that thing to your back, and flying like a bat out of Hell?”

Cliff exhales, smiles, and looks back at Hughes. “It was the closest I’ll ever get to Heaven, Mr Hughes,” replies Cliff. Hughes smiles and nods.

Cliff looks past Howard toward a smiling Jenny. “Well,” says Clifford, “maybe not…”  Hughes turns and sees Jenny talking to Peevy.

Howard turns back to Cliff, shakes his head, and grins. “See ya around, Rocketeer!” says Hughes. As Howard walks toward his waiting limousine, he turns back to Cliff.

“Oh,” says Howard, “Don’t ever fly her without this.” He tosses a small object to Secord. Cliff catches it, and looks closely at it. It’s a pack of Beeman’s Pepsin Gum. Secord looks back, puzzled — but Hughes has already entered his car. He turns to look back at the plane. A man in sunglasses reaches for a piece of tape on the side of the fuselage. He reveals a painted inscription:  “PILOT * Cliff Secord” written under the canopy.

Cliff, stunned, looks back at Hughes’s limo. Secord  laughs. The limo backs on to the Encino Road.

Minute 102: That was a Nice Car

Summary

In their usual booth inside the diner, Peevy reads the morning paper to Jenny and Cliff.

“Neville Sinclair was killed in the tragedy when flaming debris fell on his touring car, ” says Peevy. “That’s terrible. That was a nice car.”

“You look awful blue,” says Jenny to Cliff, “for a guy who pretty much saved the world.” Cliff laughs.

“Yeah,” says Cliff, “Well, I guess I got the cracked ribs to prove it.”

Jenny sighs. “You got me, ” she replies. Cliff kisses her on the cheek.

Peevy smiles, and goes back to reading his paper. He’s interrupted by the sound of an aircraft engine outside the Bulldog Cafe.

Cliff leaps up and walks out the front door of the Cafe.  On the street outside the Cafe, a man in a business suit is marshaling a GeeBee Model R with the number 5 on the wing and a tail number of NA73 to a halt.

Howard Hughes is at the controls. He opens the canopy as Cliff steps closer, with Jenny standing next to him.

“She’s a beauty, Mister Hughes, ” says Cliff.

“Isn’t she?” agrees Hughes. He removes his flight goggles. “Another month, she’ll be ready for the Nationals.” Howard hops out of the cockpit and turns to Jenny. “Miss Blake,” says Hughes, “Would you excuse us for just a -”

Minute 100: One Pass at This

Summary

The explosion of the X-3 has destroyed the last four letters of the famous “HOLLYWOODLAND” sign.

D-LZ130’s bridge cabin is ablaze, as the ship sinks toward the Hollywood Hills. Cliff lifts Jenny to the top outer surface of the ship through Hatch #7. He shuts the hatch and looks at her.

“Jenny,” says Cliff, “This thing’s full of hydrogen. When the fire hits the envelope-”

“I love you, Cliff, ” says Jenny. They embrace and kiss.

Meanwhile, the wire attached to Lothar grows taut. Apparently Lothar survived the impact with the pilot’s window. He pulls himself along the wire, headed for Cliff and Jenny. Cliff sees him coming, and stands in front of Jenny to protect her. Lothar brandishes a switchblade. Cliff prepares for another fight. Lothar laughs.

Suddenly, the pilot cabin ignites the forward hydrogen envelopes. A gout of flame erupts behind Cliff and Jenny.  Lothar turns away from them and runs aft, with Cliff and Jenny following.  A cascade of explosions continues as the hydrogen envelopes ignite.

“Run, Jenny!” yells Cliff.

From out of the night sky, an autogyro with  “HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO.” written on its side appears.  Howard Hughes pilots the craft from the aft cockpit, while Peevy acts as forward observer.

“Steady as she goes, Howard!” yells Peevy. “We’re only gonna get one pass at this!”

Cliff, Jenny, and Lothar continue to run along the top of the Zeppelin Luxembourg, with explosions almost at their heels.  The sky behind them is completely aflame.

Hughes flies past the giant swastika pained on the airship’s vertical stabilizer.

The race to the tail of the ship still has Lothar in the lead, but suddenly the giant’s fortunes change. His tether, now stretched to its limit, pulls him back to a standstill. Cliff and Jenny run past him.

Summary

Neville Sinclair  and Cliff are fighting in the zeppelin cabin.  Sinclair just knocked Cliff to the deck with one punch.

“I do my own stunts,” says Sinclair. He lunges at the prone Cliff.  Sinclair grabs Cliff by the scalp, and administers a body blow to Secord, followed by a right hook that knocks Cliff to land on the navigator’s desk.  Secord begins repeatedly bashing Cliff’s head onto the desk, while reaching for a  sharp brass caliper left on a chart. He tries to bring the caliper down on Cliff’s face, but Secord dodges and the caliper winds up stuck in the wooden desktop.

Sinclair looks around for some implement to use against Cliff, and settles on a compressed air bottle. Neville swings and misses Cliff, knocking a hole in another window, instead.  Jenny watches helplessly as the two men struggle.

Cliff grabs Neville by the lapels, but Sinclair knocks Cliff’s arms away. Neville counters with another right cross, knocking open an emergency cabinet. A Very pistol falls to the deck with other survival equipment. The flare gun slides down t

Summary

Neville Sinclair has a pistol pressed up against Jenny as he squares off with Cliff in the zeppelin cabin.

“I’ve had a bellyful of you and your cheap heroics!” says Sinclair to Secord. “Hand over ze rocket, or I’ll blow her brains… all over ze cabin!”

Cliff, his head dripping blood,  looks at Sinclair.

“No!” says Jenny, “Don’t give it to him — Cliff, you can’t!” Jenny struggles but Sinclair’s grip is too strong.

“I have to,” says Cliff. He begins unbuttoning his jacket.

“Herr Capitan!” shouts Sinclair. The ship captain steps down from the wheelhouse.

Cliff unfastens the rocket pack and holds it out to Sinclair, but Neville shakes his head. “Slide it,” says Sinclair, motioning toward the deck of the cabin.

Cliff squats down and puts the rocket pack on the wooden deck. As he does so, he quietly dislodges the Beeman’s gum Peevy had used to plug up the fuel leak. A trickle of fuel drips to the side of the rocket pack. He gives the pack a shove, and the rocket pack slides over to Sinclair.

“If he moves,” says Sinclair to the Captain, “kill her.” The Captain moves away with Jenny to the front of the ship.
