The Song: Inside & Out
The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0020 “Son”
As Jeff Shepherd prepares to release his first self titled album, “Jeff Shepherd and The Jailhouse Poets” we invited him on the show to talk about the final track “Son”. This is a special interview for a couple reasons. First we have been eager to have Jeff on since we saw him 2 years ago at Moonrunner Music Festival. The second reason is because Jeff was kind enough to discuss this song, which was spawned from the loss of both of his parents. In the interview we discuss his career in music, his family, songwriting, and of course his favorite football team The Green Bay Packers (this was recorded prior to the Packers loss to Phoenix). We were honored to have Jeff tell the story behind this amazing song.

The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0017 “Glad To See You Go”
Many of you may know Brett Conlin from his many appearances and interviews on IBWIP, but for the first time he joins me on The Song to talk about the title track from his brand new album, “Glad To See You Go”. Brett and I talk about the process of making this album as well as his favorite and least favorite part of putting the album together. We also talk about influences and his time in the punk scene. Brett was in studio so of course Mollz had to offer him some dinner… in the middle of the interview. We discuss the origins of the song “Glad To See You Go” and even dive deep into the tech of the guitar parts for the song. It was great having Brett back in the studio. Make sure you go grab a copy of the new CD or even listen to it on Spotify.

The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0011 “Husk”
I think this was one of the funnest interviews I have done in a long time. I also found out very quickly that I didn’t do enough research for this interview. Michael Rank has been played many times on IBWIP but this was my first chance to talk to him. In this episode we talk about his song “Husk” from his brand new album “Horsehair” that was released on September 22nd. We also talk about songwriting, goats, and his the difference from being an independent artist vs. being with a label. This is where I wasn’t educated… Michael was in a band called Snatches of Pink in the mid 80’s. Michael talks a little about that experience as well as provides us with the track “Rocks” which we play at the end of the interview. We had a great time and hope you have as much fun learning about Michael as we did.

The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0007 “Willy Tea Taylor”
I can’t describe what it felt like to get a text message from the one and only Willy Tea Taylor saying that he would be happy to be on the show. Thanks to Ray Vietti from The Harmed Brothers for helping make my bucket list complete. Willy Tea is one of those songwriters that comes along once in a lifetime. In this interview (besides stumbling over my words the whole time) Willy talks about his song “Hummingbird”. He talks about how a chord progression made it’s way back to him and how a bird lead him to write this amazing song. We talked about what baseball and songwriting have in common and for the first time ever on the show, we find ourselves finding out the story behind another song “Molly Rose”. It’s a double hit of Willy Tea Taylor in this special episode of the show.

Even though Fifth On The Floor is no longer making music together, Justin Wells ventures on to a new solo career. When I approached Justin about doing the show, I asked him which of his songs was the most intimate that he had written. He chose “Shotgun” from Fifth On The Floors 2013 album, “Ashes and Angels”. We talk about the first time we met, the inspiration and story behind the song, and disruptive people in the crowd at shows. We also discuss Justin preparing to hit the studio for his upcoming solo album. Justin is an amazing singer/songwriter and you don’t want to miss this interview.

The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0005 “Paul James”
I have had a bucket list of people that I have wanted to interview over the past 8 years and my guest for this episode, Possessed By Paul James, was at the top of that list. A longtime friend of IBWIP, Brooklyn Hellbetty, requested we ask him to discuss his song “The Color Of My Bloody Nose” from his 2010 release “Feed The Family”. In the interview he talks about what inspired him to write the song, the amount of requests for the song he still gets, and much more. He also talks about his late start into music, and how he would explain this song to his children when they get older. I could have talked to PPJ for hours but his 4 year old son wanted to play legos and that was a good enough reason to wrap up the interview in my book. It was a perfect example of a man with the right priorities. It was an honor to finally have the chance to talk to this amazing songwriter, musician, and all around person in Possessed By Paul James.

The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0004 “Ray Vietti”
In this episode we welcome long time friend, Ray Vietti of The Harmed Brothers, to the show. We last talked to Ray on EP119 of IBWIP. In this episode Ray and I discuss his song, “Greetings From Mardi Gras” from the album, “All The Lies You Wanna Hear”. Although the song was released in 2010, I thought it would be a great song to talk about and find out about his inspiration. Ray did an amazing job discussing the origins of the song in great detail. It’s a really interesting story that prompted Ray to write the song. The events that he wrote about in this song were instrumental in the forming of The Harmed Brothers as well. The guys have even recently re-recorded the song for an album that is slated to be released in February 2016. Ray even discusses the chord progression for the song and he and I come to the conclusion that everything in life ALWAYS leads back to the F. It was great having Ray on and this episode and it s shaping up to be one of the best I have done in my 8 years of interviewing artists.

But don’t let him fool you it’s the song’s message that is what blows listeners away. James also talks about how he tries to live life with positive energy and love as well as how he deals with the struggles that life sometimes brings.
