EP074 "Kevin Macleod - Mentorship, Milestones, and the Road to the Next 1,000 Songs!"
The Journey of Music Production In this episode, I sit down with mentor, inspiration and friend Kevin MacLeod to talk about the real journey of music production — the highs, the milestones, and everything in between, while celebrating my recent win of publishing 1,000 songs. We dive into how the creative process evolves over time, how technology has completely changed the way we make music, and why staying authentic still matters more than ever. Kevin and I discuss experimenting with different genres, chasing new sounds, and the magic that happens when collaboration clicks. There’s something powerful about making music that tells a story — not just to fill space, but to say something. Every project, whether it hits or misses, teaches me something new about who I am as a composer and what I want my music to stand for. I also share a few reflections with Kevin on how the tools have changed — from early VSTs to the advanced setups we have now — and how those changes have opened doors for creativity we couldn’t have imagined twenty years ago. Still, no matter how far technology takes us, the core remains the same: it’s about emotion, connection, and creating something that resonates with people. Music is storytelling. It’s about capturing those moments — joy, pain, growth — and turning them into sound. That’s the journey I'm on as a composer, an artist, and a content creator. 💡 Takeaways Every step in music production is a milestone — celebrate them. Exploring new genres keeps creativity alive. Technology has changed the game, but authenticity is what connects. Collaboration makes the creative process richer and more inspired. Music is storytelling — it brings emotion, texture, and depth to everything we create. Looking back helps shape where we go next. Good advice can redirect an entire career. The creative process is full of trial and error — and that’s how growth happens. 🎤 Sound Bites “You have to become the instrument.” “It’s all about making it better.” 🔑 Keywords music production, creative process, technology in music, authenticity, collaboration, music genres, storytelling, composition, milestones, advice ⏱ Chapters 00:00 – Introduction and Weather Talk02:43 – Milestones in Music Production05:24 – Exploring Genres and Creative Process07:44 – The Evolution of VST Technology10:32 – Reflections on Musical Growth13:26 – Future Directions in Music Composition16:29 – The Joy of Polka Music17:42 – Filling the Gaps in Music18:57 – Immersive Music in Gaming20:52 – The Evolution of Music Creation22:27 – Creating for Yourself vs. Clients24:50 – The Challenges of Client-Based Work26:43 – The Role of Temp Music28:31 – The Collaborative Nature of Music29:31 – The Future of the Music Industry30:22 – Advice for Future Projects

EP073b "Olivia - Part 2"
This is part two of my conversation with Olivia, where we dive deep into the creative process and what it really means to stay authentic as an artist. We talk about how music shapes content creation, the power of collaboration, and the balance between discipline and flow. I also share my thoughts on why taking breaks is essential for keeping creativity alive, and how different art forms influence and inspire one another. We explore the healing power of sound, the evolution of music through technology, and the importance of creating from a place of truth—doing it for yourself first, not for approval. Takeaways Rick Rubin’s philosophy reminds me: create for yourself first. Authenticity is everything—it’s what gives music its soul. Music doesn’t just complement content creation; it transforms it. Collaboration can unlock levels of creativity you can’t reach alone. Discipline isn’t the opposite of creativity—it’s the structure that supports it. Rest and recharge time are part of the creative process, not separate from it. Art forms are interconnected—painting, film, music, writing—all feed each other. Music has the power to heal, both creator and listener. Experimentation keeps the artistic fire alive. The future of music will always be driven by curiosity, connection, and collaboration.   Sound Bites “Create for yourself first.” “Experimentation is key in art.” “Music can heal the human being.”

EP064 "VHS Massacre Goes Commercial!"
This week, Tom & I are starting an interesting journey... Once we've taken our most recent movie project to the festival circuit, and it's been spending some time running through and being selected / gaining wins, we often get inspired to start iterating on our NEXT project.  This week, we're exploring something we've affectionately pre-titled "VHS Massacre Goes Commercial". Growing up Gen X and experiencing the height of cable television, Tom & I both remember some very crazy commercials from back in the day.  And it got us thinking - what if we started a podcast series about this, explored the idea, and see what happens? With that, we give you Session 1 - ENJOY!   Follow me for more royalty free music: https://timkulig.com/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063945225723 https://www.patreon.com/timkulig https://www.instagram.com/timkuligfreemusic/ Tim Kulig \ timkulig.com

EP063 "In the Studio with Output's Analog Strings!"
Another studio session week! Yes, I'm back in the studio - feels like I haven't left lol!  I'm auditioning / sampling patches in Occular Sound's Analog Strings pack to get ready for some massive orchestral / DnD writing coming up.  Need new patches / ideas to stimulate ideating and creativity, so I'm revisiting some tolls I haven't played around with in awhile and finding some real inspiration here! I talk a bit about the process today, and how to find / use / articulate with each patch, knowing that you in essence have to "Learn" each patch as a new instrument based on how it was programmed and layered.  Fun stuff - and it gets into the nitty gritty nuance of the creative process here. (I may have mistakenly called this Ocular Sounds in the recording - it is in fact Output that put this and Analog Brass out, so apologies for the confusion). EP062 "In The Studio! 8.19.2025"
This week, I delve into some software patches and demo them live.  Showing my process of listening and playing to find the next tune is something I need to do more of, and this week the updates on the albums and the festival run with Video Dreams was lacking. So I did a thing - I just recorded myself doing what I do to climb the 1,000 published tunes ladder. So here it is.  Raw.  Unedited.  Fun.  (I assure you, it is, even if I didn't seem super excited this week!) All part of the process - thanks for checking it out! ~Tim
