Another season of Trust the Process has come and gone!
I love doing these highlight reels because I get to actually listen to the episodes in depth to put them together for you!
I hope you have learned much and applied even more, to your recovery journey or your prevention journey as well.
Most of all, I hope that you feel know that you are worth it. You are worth the extra time that investing in prevention techniques will necessitate. You are worth the care that you need to recover from an injury, even if it means putting a strain on finances. Your career is worth it, because you are worth it.
We are entering a new and exciting time for the podcast because now that Musician Unchained is up and running, I will be going to grad school for applied performance psychology, to better serve you and our community!
In the offseason, reach out to tell me your experiences listening to the show!
Also, I have extremely limited space in my coaching program (at a HUGELY discounted rate btw) so reach out if that is something you want to explore!
Keep on keepin’ on!
If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show!

I love getting to interview people who are referred to me from previous guests!
Especially ones who are trained in NLP and love teaching like I do!
In this episode, Alison Garner shares her story of how her injury led her to learn about somatic awareness, essentially how our body interprets and reacts to stress and anxiety
She shares how the gaining of her own sense of curiosity has helped her develop a curriculum (Musical Minds, check it out in the link below!), and help countless clients transform their playing, recover from injuries, and more.
One of my favorite things to talk about: the impact of teachers on students, is something that Alison knows a thing or two about, and she doesn’t hold back here!
Not a better way to end our interviews from season 3!

Today's message is simple.
Imagine if someone gave you a random seed, and you didn't know what it would turn into?
What would happen if you planted it?
What would happen if you took care of it?
Your injury is that seed. You have the choice to plant it or not, and see if it will grow into something beautiful.
It will take work, but it will be worth it!
Keep on keepin' on!
If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show!

This show has primarily addressed the difficulties that injured musicians deal with
That was my goal from the start
Dr Jordi Albert helped me realize that there is another group of individuals who also deal with a lot - those who help injured musicians rehabilitate
The fact is, there are not a lot of practitioners out there who really know how to help injured musicians rehabilitate and come back from injury, in physical, psychological, and pedagogical ways
That means that those that do know how become quite inundated with pleas for help
I wish there were more of us to share the load, and make these resources more accessible to musicians
One day we will reach that goal
Dr Jordi Albert clues us into those struggles and how to stay balanced through them
This episode covers a lot of ground, Dr Albert knows his stuff (he even got braces just to research how to play trumpet healthily with them!)
But our message to you wonderful educators and practitioners is - keep on keepin' on. You are doing amazing work!
If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show!

This episode is dedicated to my incredible cousin, Ivy Foley (2011-2025) and her amazing family. Foleys Strong!
For most of my life, I thought getting through things meant becoming mentally tough - just gritting my teeth and pushing through the pain and discomfort.
Joy and fulfillment were completely out of the equation
But then I learned about a new way to go through hard times - being resilient
Today I share how my recently departed cousin taught me how to live life in the face of true adversity
I share how resiliency is the key to getting all we can get out of our trials
I share how mental toughness is not the thing to strive for - but instead it is mental fitness
This episode may be what is missing from your injury recovery journey, or your journey through injury prevention
Keep on keepin' on!
Ivy Strong Forever.

Burnout.
We always talk about it, but only give lip service on what truly causes it.
Until I talked to today's guest, Dr Tracy Qian, I never considered that it could be classified as a "psychological injury," as in, you need to allow yourself to recover from it just like a physical injury
I also didn't even consider until our conversation the fact that burnout (and what Dr Qian calls "musical trauma") has many different causes, ranging from performance anxiety, to abusive teacher-pupil relationships.
We talk about her research studying the experiences of other musicians who have experienced musical trauma (28/32 injured musicians studied didn't know of any resources at the start of their injury!)
And for the first time on TTP, we talk about organist health, and how to stay physically healthy for the demanding instrument that the organ is.
As an added but critical bonus, we also talk about hearing health, both for organists and for all musicians in general.
And that is where I think you will learn some things that are hard to hear (no pun intended).
Click here for all the resources Dr Qian mentions on the show!

Have you ever wondered what approach to injury recovery is most effective?
Now, don't get me wrong - everybody needs something different when it comes to their recovery
However, this week's study shows how music students going through injury recovery had more success when they took an active approach.
For our last Research and Development episode of Season 3, I share a study that was shared with me by Dr Carina Joly, a recent guest of the show.
It was entitled "Epidemiology, Treatment Efficacy, and Anxiety Aspects of Music Students Affected by Playing-Related Pain" and one of the co-authors, Dr Eckart Altenmüller, is one of the leading experts in musicians dystonia research!
They studied the cases of over 180 music students who visited their clinic in Hanover, Germany with playing related pain.
I am sure you will find that this study proves things that you may have already known, but now it gives data to that knowledge.

How can I turn something that has cost me so much in my life into a positive that can help others?
I don't think Kenny would claim he has completely found THE answer to that question, but he definitely has an idea of what that could look like.
A life long cold sore sufferer and professional trumpeter, Kenny Robinson knew that he had to find a solution to his cold sores if he was going to be able to continue in his trumpet career.
He shares how a little bottle of solution that he had made with the help of a research book eventually became Robinson's Remedies
He shares how his desire to serve his community of fellow cold sore sufferers became his mission in life.
He even shares a story about how his old boss, MAYNARD FERGUSON gave him the grace to heal, and still feel included in the band, while his cold sores were particularly bad.
If there is anyone who can teach us how to turn a negative into a positive, it is Kenny Robinson!
Keep on keepin' on!

Have you ever thought about that?
Who goes through an injury on purpose?
Especially with overuse injuries, where the injury often occurs from a misunderstanding of technique or body mapping, it can be really easy to put the blame on ourselves, or even those who originally taught us.
Sometimes that blame can be debilitating, and we fail to give ourselves the grace we need to move through recovery healthily.
Here is a life principle that I hope helps you like it does me: Most everyone is doing the best they can with what they have.
What does that mean?
It means that we didn't play incorrectly on purpose, it was something that we were unaware of!
Part of recovery is becoming aware of those things that caused our injury.
But no one talks about the other side of that coin: giving yourself credit for the good you were already doing.
Your best thinking got you this far...but your best learning will get you on the right path of recovery.
Keep on keepin' on!

One of my favorite quotes by a guest on the show happened in this interview.
But you are going to have to listen to find out what it was!
Dr Carina Joly hails from Brazil, and was someone recommended to me from Dr Lesley McCallister, another wonderful pianist and researcher in this field
We talk about how one of the best things that healthy musicians can do for their PLAYING (as in, you will become a better performer) is invest in their health and knowledge about how their body works while performing.
Because sometimes, if you haven't gone through an injury, it can be hard to see the importance of the things on this show, right?
So at least do it for the benefit of your playing, if not for the benefit of your health.
If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show!

Why do you want to come back to performing on your instrument?
Really think deeply about this.
Is it because you are trying to finish a degree "on time?"
Is it because you miss performing with your friends?
Is it because you love performing on your instrument?
For me, I originally wanted to come back as soon as possible so my future plans, including graduation would not get pushed back.
After a while though, I realized this was not healthy!
In this episode I share the experience I had last spring that reshaped how I view my comeback in a way that serves me, and does not put undue pressure on my rehabilitation timeline.

The age old question: How can I balance life and (insert instrument)?
We all love our musical lives, and they bring us a lot of fulfillment. But we also want to feel like we are living a life outside of our instrument. How do we do both?
While this is a question everyone must answer themselves, renowned trumpeter and my friend Josh Kauffman of The Army Blues humbly submits his experience as a potential answer for people.
He talks about how one injury taught him about slowing down, and not expecting to "figure everything out" by the end of college.
He talks about how his SECOND injury taught him the importance of choosing gear that will help us play well but ALSO play HEALTHY.
And my personal favorite part, he talks about how becoming a father has taught him about cultivating and curating a meaningful career as a trumpet artist.
I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

Welcome back to another Research and Development episode!
This week's study is essentially a "Day in the Life of an Injured Musician."
Why do musicians hide their injuries until they are completely debilitated?
Why is it sometimes difficult to find proper medical help for musicians?
Whose responsibility is it to get this research out to those who need it?
All of these questions are answered in today's episode, and I am so grateful to Drs Rickert, Ackermann and Barrett for publishing their 3 part study: Injury and the Orchestral Environment.
Just remember this: Your injury is not your fault, but your recovery is your responsibility.
This includes educators to do their part in educating themselves on these subjects to prevent further injury to themselves and their students!
Keep on keepin' on!
Check out the three parts of this incredible study here:
Injury and the Orchestral Environment: Part I: The Role of Work Organisation and Psychosocial Factors in Injury Risk
Injury and the Orchestral Environment: Part II: Organisational Culture, Behavioural Norms, and Attitudes to Injury
If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show!

What do musicians, athletes, and entrepreneurs have in common?
They need coaching to succeed!
In this episode, renowned tubist, Life Coach/NLP Master Practitioner, and my PERSONAL COACH, Steve Rossé shares with us how life coaching and neurolinguistic programming can help injured musicians put themselves in the best possible situation to succeed at their recovery.
He shares how the developing field of timeline therapy can help injured musicians navigate the difficult emotions that an injury elicits
We talk about how we can't afford NOT to invest in ourselves through coaching!
He teaches how developing an ideal mindset can inform auditions, practice sessions, and especially build resilience through injury!
Keep on keepin' on!
If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show!

I gotta say, I went all out on this episode...
Sometimes we struggle keeping the main thing the main thing
Sometimes we struggle to get to the root issue of what we are going through
Sometimes we don't even WANT to get to the root issue of what we are going through
We just want the easy answer, the easy solution.
But as they say,
Easy come, easy go!
This episode I talk about how you can change the way you view the MENTAL SIDE of your recovery, in three main ways, or "roots" to your recovery.
1. Understanding the mindsets that may have led to an injury (talking mostly about overuse related injuries)
2. Learning to grieve your injury
3. Capitalizing on the mental optimization that comes through RECOVERY
I hope this episode impacts you the way it has done to me!
Keep on keepin' on!
If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show!

Often with injured musicians, we can fall into the trap of finding a "pot of gold" with our recovery, that we think will completely fix everything we went through, and will make it as if we were never injured.
VERY rarely is that ever the case.
Instead it is a process, to be trusted (;
Today we get to learn from the 3rd horn player from the Toronto Symphony and founder of The Embouchure Project, Gabriel Radford!
He shares his experience with embouchure dysfunction and eventual dystonia diagnosis, and how he was able to get back from it.
He shares the frustrations he had going to people for help who did not have his best interests at heart.
He shares how his experience led him to create The Embouchure Project, which is an "ever-growing network" of scientists, neurologists, physiotherapists and other practitioners to promote well-researched practices to help musicians struggling with any type of embouchure dysfunction
Musicians can now go to The Embouchure Project for a free consultation to be matched up with a provider that best meets their needs!
I am so grateful to have been able to partner up with Gabe and The Embouchure Project in this way, and hope those who need that resource will take it!
Keep on keepin' on!

Ever thought about that?
I can’t tell you how many times that I, as an injured trumpet player, have been asked the question “Who were you kissing?” when I tell people that I tore my lip while playing trumpet.
There are times to grieve your injury, and there are times to laugh about it.
Just like there are times to grieve the loss of a loved one, and there are times to laugh about funny memories shared with that person.
In this episode I share several strategies to help you navigate your recovery, thanks to the great work of Adam Grant.
Adam Grant, a renowned organizational psychologist, in his book Hidden Potential, talks about harmonious passion and deliberate play.
To boil those concepts down, it is about finding joy in the process.
These are tactical strategies to help you succeed in your recovery journeys, not just happy-go-lucky hacks, so everyone should implement them!
Keep on keepin’ on and trust the process!

We have talked about identity a lot on this show
How hard it is to reconcile when we go through an injury
My fellow Amish Country neighbor, José Johnson gives us a way to view our injury and our identity
He gives a new way to think about why we are musicians in the first place
He shares how Eastern philosophy and martial arts has helped him navigate performance anxiety, as well as how those principles can help a musician going through injury.
I love the uniqueness of the topics we covered on this episode and I know you will too!
Keep on keepin' on!

How can we know if the goals for our recovery are realistic or not?
How can we know if we are pushing ourselves too hard or too little?
As a podcaster, I listen to a few podcasts myself!
One of them, The Injured Athletes Club Podcast, hosted by Carrie Jackson, CMPC, and sports journalist Cindy Kuzma, is one that all of you should be listening to as well, regardless if you have ever played a sport or not.
In one of their episodes, they mention a concept called “adaptive excellence” which Cindy had learned by a marathoner she interviewed by the name of Amby Burfoot.
Adaptive excellence is not diminishing our effort to cater to the circumstances. It is about setting goals that are within our reach, relative to the circumstances, and going all-in to achieve them.
With your recovery, you wouldn’t practice the same amount of hours as you did healthy when you are coming back from an injury, right?
So adaptive excellence tells us - what is the best I can do in this environment? How can I reframe my concept of excellence to this situation?
Adaptive excellence is about giving yourself the grace you deserve, to help you become the best you can be.
