In this edition of UBC "Sermon Discussions" Jason Wing discusses questions related to Sunday’s Sermon out of Micah 4:1-5. The main idea for the sermon was: True peace is found in Christ who came and is coming again Questions discussed in this episode: Q. Do you believe the church is called to build peace now, or will true shalom only come when Christ returns? Q. How should believers pursue peace when the cultural issues all around us are divisive—immigration, war, policing, or elections? Q. Is violence an acceptable biblical means to use to bring peace? Q. You mentioned how our culture is full of people who don’t have peace in their hearts, and how that is seen in so many people dealing with mental health issues related to anxiety. Do you believe that it’s okay for people to seek professional medical help for issues related to anxiety and such? What about a person who is saved but still deals with mental health issues? Can you have spiritual peace with God, but not have mental health inside yourself? As a reminder we have created a place where you can send us your questions regarding the sermons or topics we discuss in these podcasts. Send them to sermonquestions@ubcbeavercreek.com.

Sermon Discussions | Advent Part 1: Hope - Romans 15:8-13
In this edition of UBC "Sermon Discussions" Jason Wing discuss questions related to Sunday’s Sermon out of Romans 15:8-13. The main idea for the sermon was: True hope is found in Christ, who came and is coming again. Questions discussed in this episode: Q. The passage mentions being filled with the Holy Spirit as being part of the way we have hope. What does it mean to be filled with the spirit? Is it any different than being indwelt with the spirit? Q. In Rom 15, Paul writes to address the tension and division between Jews and Gentiles. What are some contemporary examples of cultural differences that tend to segregate churches? How can we overcome these? Q. In your sermon you explained the difference between hoping for something and wishing for something. Briefly explain the difference again. Have you witnessed Christians “wishing” for the promises of Christ instead of “hoping” for them? Sermon Discussions | Genesis Pt. 66: Genesis Ch. 50
In this edition of UBC "Sermon Discussions" Jason Wing and Deacon Chairman Cory Thomas discuss questions related to Sunday’s Sermon out of Genesis 50. The main idea for the sermon was: The Christ foreshadowed in the Genesis story, and featured in the Bible's story, is the Christ who fulfills your story. Questions discussed in this episode: Q. We wrapped up the Genesis series with the account of the end of Joseph’s life in chapter 50. Jason did a good job of hitting the highlights, but he couldn’t touch on everything. Corey, what other thoughts on the end of the Joseph account would you like to share? Q. Both Jacob and Joseph have their sons swear to them that they will bury their father’s bones in Canaan. Should we swear? Matthew 5 - Jesus says do not swear. Let your yes be yes. Explain what the meaning of swearing is in this chapter and should we swear to others today? Q. In chapter 50, we saw Joseph’s lack of vengeance toward his brothers and his spirit of forgiveness toward them. It is hard for me to forgive. How do I forgive someone that abused me? I want to follow God well. Help me navigate this. As a reminder we have created a place where you can send us your questions regarding the sermons or topics we discuss in these podcasts. Sermon Discussions | Genesis Pt. 65: Genesis 49
In this edition of UBC "Sermon Discussions" Jason Wing and Deacon Chairman Cory Thomas discuss questions related to Sunday’s Sermon out of Genesis 49. The main idea for the sermon was: The fullness of God’s covenant blessings are ultimately found in Christ Questions discussed in this episode: Q. Past sin has consequences - In this story Jacob’s son’s sin prevent them from their father’s blessing. In a grace upon grace upon grace culture - Is this how God still works among his children today? Q. The scriptures hold Joseph in high esteem. I can’t really think of a place where God rebukes / calls out sin in the story of Joseph - I’d love to hear your commentary on this. Q. Jacob has great words of blessing for Joseph. In some ways, it seems like he is the truly blessed son, not really Judah. So, who received the blessing - Judah or Joseph? Q. Joseph endured a lot of perdition / trials / troubles - should Jesus followers expect to endure the same? What are ways to prepare for persecution? Sermon Discussions | Genesis Pt. 64: 47:13-48:22
In this edition of UBC "Sermon Discussions" Jason Wing and Deacon Chairman Cory Thomas discuss questions related to Sunday’s Sermon out of Genesis 47:13-48:22. The main idea for the sermon was: When you believe who God is, you can live a life of faith Questions discussed in this episode: Q. Why didn’t Jacob just bless Joseph, but instead included Ephraim and Manasseh? Q. In the rest of the storyline of Scripture, what happens to Ephraim and Manasseh? Does Ephraim become greater than Manasseh? Does Manasseh end up like the other older brothers (Ishmael and Esau). Q. This blessing of Joseph’s boys seems to be a big, climactic point in the story of Genesis. Is it really that big of a  deal? What significance does it really have? Q. What are ways we can live by and demonstrate the kind of faith mentioned in this passage? Sermon Discussions | Genesis Pt. 63: Ch. 46-47:12
In this edition of UBC "Sermon Discussions" Jason Wing answers questions related to his Genesis 46-47:12 sermon. The main idea for the sermon was: When we trust who God is, we can go wherever He leads. Questions discussed in this episode: Quote: "Genealogies are not fillers. They are the bloodline leading to Jesus.”  ~ Pastor Jason There were three characteristics of God that you taught us to see in this passage. God is faithful. God is sovereign. God is present. Q. Why doesn’t it feel like God is present as he seems to be in scripture? (Audible, physical) You ended your sermon with encouraging Jesus' followers to heed to God's calling in their lives even if when it seems it could be uncomfortable. Q. Sharing the gospel is uncomfortable for me to do. Should this concern me? Submitting to God to go where he is leading takes trust. Not on myself by fully on God. Q. What are some warning signs that show I might be relying on myself rather than God? When I think of trusting God it makes me think of the old hymn I used to sing growing up "I Surrender All" Q. What does “surrender all” to God really look like? As a reminder we have created a place where you can send us your questions regarding the sermons or topics we discuss in these podcasts. Sermon Discussions | Genesis Part 61: Ch. 42 & 43 with Dan Turner
In this edition of UBC "Sermon Discussions" Dan Turner answers questions related to his Genesis 42 & 43 sermon. The main idea for the sermon was: In a land of sin and sadness, God forms a clan of song and gladness. Questions discussed in this episode: What are ways we can see (not miss) the beauty in a mess? What are some things that we allow to get in the way, sometimes blinding us, to realizing that God is bringing us to repentance? I have given my life to Jesus and repented of my sins but I keep falling into (committing sin). What is wrong with me? If I have drifted from God, is there ever time he will give up on me? Sermon Discussions | Genesis Part 58: Ch. 39:1-23
In this edition of UBC "Sermon Discussions" Pastor Jason answers questions related to his Genesis 39:1-23 sermon. The main idea for the sermon was: The blessing of God’s presence will help us in times of life’s trials. Questions discussed in this episode: Why does God put us through Trials? ...Faithfulness to God doesn't always result in worldly blessings (meaning losing job, friends, family, or even life). Why would God put me through something like this if I am faithful to him? How do I know that God is with me? Is there ever a time that God isn't with me? Sexual immorality is probably one of the hardest things to flee. What are ways I can be prepared to flee sexual temptation? Was Jesus ever tempted sexually? Sermon Discussions | Genesis Part 57: Ch. 38:1-30
In this edition of UBC "Sermon Discussions" Pastor Jason answers questions related to his Genesis 38:1-30 sermon. The main idea for the sermon was: The same God who has a startling response to sin has startling redemption for sinners. Questions discussed in this episode:  God struck down Er and Onan for being evil, but not Judah. Why does he kill some people who are evil, but not others? In our passage, we saw the practice of levirate marriage which required men to have sex with family members. In today’s world, it’s illegal for people to be sexually active with their own family members. Why was it OK back then? In your shepherding of God's church, do you feel as though Christians take sin seriously or do they have a carefree attitude towards it? In your sermon you encouraged people to turn from sexual immorality. Is sexual sin worse than other sins? Why or why not? Can you speak to the dangers of pornography and why it is not something Christians can just ignore?
