Nuestro hogar, la Tierra, está experimentando síntomas de enfermedad. La Selva Amazónica se está convirtiendo en un clima hipertropical debido a la sequía y los calores intensos. Al mismo tiempo, la EPA, agencia que protege el medio ambiente en EEUU está siendo desmantelada. Un documento aterrador que las Naciones Unidas acaban de publicar revela que el daño ambiental se tabuló en un total de US$5 billones cada hora que pasa. El informe advierte que sin cambios radicales en la governancia, la economía y las finanzas, el colapso de la sociedad sería una realidad inevitable. Marina Silva, ministra del medio ambiente del Brazil nos recuerda: "Sabemos lo que se nos viene encima, sabemos lo que necesitamos hacer, tenemos todo lo necesario para hacerlo y sin embargo, no tomamos las medidas necesarias." Un sapo minúsculo hallado en la Amazonía la semana pasada nos devuelve la esperanza, en esta temporada que celebra el renacer. Sebastiáo Salgado, una vez más, nos ofrece sabiduría para guiar nuestros pasos, y la hallamos en su majestuoso libro "Trabajadores". El texto y las imágenes de esta obra son testamento del hecho de que a pesar de todas las maquinaciones que conjuramos para sustituír la labor humana y la comunidad; nada reemplaza adecuadamente el poder de los esfuerzos humanos concertados.  

Our home planet, Earth, is showing signs of dis-ease. The Amazon Rainforest is becoming a hypertropical climate due to unprecedented drought and heat. At the same time, the EPA and other regulatory and safety agencies are being dismantled and co-opted. A sobering document recently released by the UN's Global Environmental Outlook asserts that unsustainable practices in food production and fossil fuel extraction are inflicting environmental harm valued at $5 billion every single hour. The report warns that without radical shifts in global governance, economics, and finance, societal collapse could become an unavoidable reality. Marina Silva, environmental minister of Brazil reminds us: "We know what is coming towards us, we know what needs to be done and we have the means to do it, yet we don’t take the necessary measures.” A minuscule new frog found in the Amazon last week heralds hope, as well as the season that celebrates rebirth. Sebastiáo Salgado once again, offers wisdom to guide our way, this time found in his majestic book "Workers". The text and images are testament to the fact that no matter how many machinations we conjure to substitute human endeavor and community; nothing adequately replaces the power of concerted human efforts.

Un centro de conferencias que ardía, los salones de reunión inundados, las voces de aquellos que defendían la ciencia de todo aquello que la humanidad, en colectivo, debe hacer para evitar la catástrofe; ignoradas; sin embargo la presencia de quienes protestaban era audible, colorida y llena de propósito, incluso los bebés estaban allí para rebelarse en contra de un sistema que valora los productos y las ganancias por encima de la vida humana. He aquí un mosaico que creé con los artículos que seleccioné como resumen de lo que la Conferencia de las Partes #30 nos ofreció. No estableció planes concretos para dejar de utilizar combustibles, y en efecto, no produjo un mapa que nos permita detener el calentamiento global. Escuchamos las voces de muchos de los asistentes y conocemos varias Victorias Amazónicas luchando en nombre de todos nosostros, insistiendo, tal como sus compañeros, los representantes indígenas: “Nada sobre nosotros sin nosotros”. Comparto un testimonio conmovedor de un periodista Xipai y concluyo con otro de los magníficos libros de Sebastiáo Salgado. Niños, Enfants, Kinder, presenta a 90 niños; ellos son los niños del pasado, el presente, el futuro, los más inocentes entre nosotros quienes de hecho, serán los más afectados si persistimos en dejar de actuar para enfrentar la emergencia climática.   

A venue on fire, flooded conference spaces, the voices of the people defending the science of what humanity, as a collective, has to do to avoid catastrophe, ignored; yet the presence of the protesters was loud, colorful and purposeful, even babies were there to rebel against a system that values commodities and profit over human life. Here's a mosaic I have created with the articles that I selected as a summary of what the Conference of the Parties offered us all. Offering no new plans to cut fossil fuels, the UN’s climate conference failed to produce a roadmap to stop global warming. We hear about many protesters and Victorias Amazonicas fighting for us all, insisting like their indigenous fellow protesters: NOTHING ABOUT, US WITHOUT US! I share a moving testimony by a Xipai journalist and conclude with another of Sebastiáo Salgado's magnificent publications. Children, Enfants, Kinder features 90 children; they mirror eyes of the past, the present, the feature; the most innocent among us who will in fact, suffer the most if we continue to fail to act to confront the climate emergency.

Comienzo con algunos conceptos básicos de la Compasión, los momentos edificantes y la Zona de Resiliencia, ideas que se concretaron como experiencias vividas al compartir una semana con mi hermana. La Amazonía me llamó de regreso a esta misión de contar sus historias en la forma de un regalo sin precio calculable: Amazonia, un libro extraordinario de Sebastiáo Salgado. Sus palabras poderosas e imágenes sublimes constituyen el prefacio perfecto para los reportajes que están saliendo de la COP30; opiniones contrarias, acción insuficiente, talvez demasiadas promesas y palabras sin peso. El hecho es que las comunidades indígenas han sido excluídas de los eventos principales y la Amazonía continúa ardiendo y siendo destruída. ¿  Seremos capaces de tener suficiente corazón para salvar el corazón mismo de la tierra? ¿Podemos, en colectividad, sostener a la majestuosa Amazonía con preocupación? ¿Te animas a unirte a mi intención de sostener a la Selva Amazónica dentro de nuestro propio corazón individual, con cariño, asombro y devoción?

I start by sharing some concepts of the basics of Compassion; edifying moments and our resilience zone, which became lived experiences as I welcomed my sister for a visit last week. Amazonia called me back to this mission of telling her stories in the form of a priceless gift; Amazonia, an extraordinary book by Sebastiáo Salgado. His powerful words and sublime images serve as the perfect preface to the news reports emerging from COP30, contradictory opinions, insufficient action, perhaps too many promises and empty words. The fact is, the indigenous peoples have been left out of the main event and Amazonia continues burning and being decimated. Will we care enough to save the heart of the Earth? Can we, collectively, hold the Majestic Amazon with concern? Can you join me today and hold the Amazon Rainforest within your own heart; with care, wonder and devotion?

Este episodio contiene las sorpresas que hallé durante mi viaje reciente a Newburyport, Mass, una ciudad costera con un rico pasado marítimo y encantos en cada esquina. Escucharemos la canción y los sabios llamados de las ballenas y las criaturas del océano, gracias a una invitación de una querida amiga quien es tan resiliente como un árbol gigante. Las criaturas que habitan el mar también nos recuerdan acerca de la naturaleza resiliente de la Tierra misma, y los mecanismos de adaptación desplegados por los árboles enormes de la Selva Esmeralda hacen eco de este mensaje.

This episode features the surprises I found during my recent trip to Newburyport, Mass, a seacoast city with a rich maritime past and charms that abound at every turn. We will listen to the song and wise calls of the whales and the creatures of the deep, thanks to an invitation of a dear friend who is as resilient as a towering tree herself. The creatures of the ocean will remind us about the resilient nature of mother Earth herself, echoed by the resilience mechanisms deployed by giant trees in the depth of the Emerald Forest.

La Canción de la Cigarra abre este, el primer episodio de nuestra 10ma. temporada ya que me ayudó a recuperar mi voz para regresar con nueva convicción. Cantando al sol, como la cigarra, después de un año bajo la tierra, igual que sobreviviente que vuelve de la guerra. Después de un mes de estudio y viajes, establezco un nuevo inicio. Tuve una experiencia académica frustrante y la naturaleza, como siempre, me redimió el alma, la presencia espiritual de los árboles en una Casa de Retiros Quaker en Philadelphia, llamada Pendle Hill. Fui silenciada, interrumpida, pero estoy de vuelta con el mensaje completo de los Arboles; con las historias de aquellos ojos enmarcados por la densidad de la selva que siempre han guiado mi vida; aquellos que reconocí en un encuentro que alteró mi vida, hace 35 años, así como los pares nuevos de ojos que persisten en inspirarme, ahora llenos de color en el nuevo logo de Victoria Amazónica, señales de Esperanza y Amor.  

The Song of the Cicada opens this first episode of our 10th season because it helped me recover my voice to return with renewed conviction. Singing, under the sun, like the cicada, after hiding for over a year, under the soil. Just as a survivor who returns from the war. After one month of study and travel, I am back. I experienced an academic disappointment and nature, as always, redeemed my soul, the spiritual presence of Trees at a Quaker Retreat house in Philadelphia, called Pendle Hill. I was silenced, interrupted, yet now I return with the complete message from Trees; with the stories of those eyes framed by greenery that have always guided my life; those I recognized in a life-changing encounter in the Amazon, 35 years ago, and those new ones that persist on inspiring me, now infused with color in Victoria Amazonica's new logo, signposts of Hope and Love.

Al concluír esta temporada, repaso el contenido de cada uno de nuestros episodios, en una mirada global que marca nuestra búsqueda del Hombre Verde. Esta jornada nos llevó lejos y a lugares insospechados, pero me ayudó a llegar a una poderosa conclusión que expresé en el episodio anterior; tan solo el AMOR puede derrotar la maldad, la malicia, la crueldad y los egos indómitos que poseen una sed por el poder inagotable. En los ojos de mi nieta, he visto la esperanza, y creo, firmemente, que estos nuevos terrícolas constituyen el rostro nuevo y emergente de los Seres Humanos Verdes que construirán un futuro radicalmente diferente, con la naturaleza como su eje central. También exploro una reflexión personal, con la esperanza de hallar más comprensión y afirmo, al final: Talvez este sea el reverdecer de las almas que he tratado de convocar, uno con consecuencias más profundas que el desarrollo de una conciencia ambiental y un regreso a la naturaleza, que más bien implica una verdadera unión de fuerzas, reveladora de una expiación, y una saciedad del espíritu que tiene el poder de restablecer nuestra humanidad.

As I conclude this season, I review the content of each one of our episodes, which describes the wide arc of our quest for the Green Man, which despite having taken us far and wide, ended up by bringing me to a powerful realization which I voiced last week: Only LOVE can defeat evil, malice, cruelty and unrestrained egos whose thirst for power is unquenchable. In my grand daughter's eyes, I have seen hope, and I firmly believe that these new earthlings constitute the new, emergent face of the Green Humans that will build a radically different, nature-centric future. I also explore a personal reflection, hoping to deepen our understanding and conclude: Perhaps this is the greening of the soul I have been trying to summon, one with deeper consequences than an environmental awareness and a return to nature, it implies an atonement and wholeness of spirit that has the power to rekindle our humanity.

Nos dirigimos hacia los espacios internos de la tierra para explorar sus misterios y recuperar el asombro. Al cruzar el umbral hacia el inframundo, siguiendo a nuestro Cerunnos, nuestro experimentado guía, nos hallamos en una aventura en la que el espacio y el tiempo cambian a cada paso, al escalar, descender, agarrarnos de salientes y grietas para poder avanzar y descubrir las posibilidades que se esconden bajo nuestros pies. También profundizamos en la historia de vida del dueño de la Reserva Río Claro y escuchamos sus palabras y sabiduría respecto a la problemática del Río Magdalena, tan íntimamente entretejida con la historia de Colombia, como nos revela el nuevo libro de Wade Davis. Concluyo con el emergente nuevo rostro del Ser Humano Verde, los terrícolas recién llegados quienes tendrán la tarea de construír un futuro radicalmente diferente, cuyo eje será la naturaleza.

We venture into the inner spaces of the earth to explore her mysteries, rekindle wonder. As we cross the threshold into the underland, following our own Cerunnos, our knowledgeable guide, we find ourselves within an adventure in which space and time change at every step, climbing, descending, grasping onto crevices and cracks to move ahead and discover the possibilities that hide right under our feet. We also go further into the life story of the owner of the Rio Claro Reserve and listen to his words and wisdom regarding the issues of the Magdalena River, so intertwined with the history of Colombia, as revealed in the new Wade Davis book. I conclude with the emergence of the new face of the Green Human, the newest  earthlings who will be tasked with re-building a radically different, nature-centric future.

En vista de que me he desviado recientemente de los orígenes académicos del arquetipo del Hombre Verde, decidí resumir el resto del libro que he estado siguiendo, En Busca del Hombre Verde. También reconozco que desde que he estado inmersa en las investigaciones acerca de él y su consorte, la Mujer Verde, he estado encontrando cada vez más seres humanos verdes quienes han dedicado sus vidas a la defensa de la naturaleza y ejemplifican un regreso a una manera más verde de vivir. Te llevo conmigo a la Reserva Río Claro, adonde llegué guiada por mi hermana, una Mujer Verde, definitivamente, quien administra un santuario para perros abandonados. Río Claro es una selva húmeda majestuosa donde un río poderoso es El Patrón, cuyo propietario es, sin duda, un Hombre Verde en plenitud. Aprendemos acerca de su jornada como activista ambiental, y acerca de su hija, quien también compartía su pasión por la naturaleza. El rafting sobre las aguas turbulentas y la exploración del bosque son las primeras aventuras que comparto contigo, y la entrada a descubrir las entrañas de la tierra, gracias a la espeleología, será el tema del próximo episodio. Ven, sígueme a la cuenca del Río Claro a la cual rodea una selva encantada, donde la pregunta que formulo en el título de este episodio se vuelve inevitable.

Since I have deviated recently from the academic origins of the archetype of the Green Man, I decide to summarize the rest of the book I had been following, The Quest for the Green Man. I also point out that by researching him, and his consort, the Green Woman, I have been finding more and more Green humans who have devoted their lives to the defense of nature and exemplify a return to a Greener way of living. I take you with me to the Rio Claro Natural Reserve, which we visited as prompted by my sister, a Green Woman herself, who runs a sanctuary for abandoned dogs. Rio Claro is a majestic rainforest where a clear, powerful river is The Boss, whose owner is a real-life Green Man. We learn about his journey as an environmental activist, and about his daughter, who also cared passionately for nature. Water rafting down rapids and trekking the forest are the first adventures I share with you, and spelunking will be the topic of the next episode. Come follow me to the Rio Claro Basin surrounded by an Enchanted Forest, where the question voiced in the title of this episode becomes unavoidable.

Las aguas turbulentas de Río Claro, en Colombia, me recordaron recientemente acerca del poder del Río Amazonas. Y precisamente, el río de la vida misma, que es tan salvaje e impredecible como el Amazonas, nos ha demostrado recientemente en este estado de Texas, que he elegido como mi hogar, que el poder del agua que fluye puede ser tan brutal como es bálsamo para la vida y necesaria. Luego, tal como prometí, te llevo de regreso a Casablanca, en Marruecos, y comparto contigo la majestuosa Mezquita Hassan II. Uno de sus elementos decorativos más abundantes, las Muqarnas, me recordaron las Victorias Amazónicas. Ambas imágenes celebran las simetrías y las estructuras repetitivas de la naturaleza, evocando las matemáticas sagradas tan representativas del arte y la arquitectura musulmanas. El agua, la memoria de un venado ahogado y el rugido del poder de la naturaleza persisten en tratar de recordarnos que todo aquello que existe es un contenedor y eventualmente, participante de la red de la vida que nos sostiene en sus hilos a todos nosotros.

The raging waters of Rio Claro, in Colombia reminded recently of of the Amazon River. And currently, the river of life itself, which is as wild and unpredictable as the Amazon, has shown us, in the state of Texas which I call home, that the power of flowing water is as brutal as it is life-sustaining and necessary. Then, as promised, I take you back to Casablanca, in Morocco, and share the magnificence of the Hassan II Mosque. One of its most prevalent ornaments, Muqarnas, remind me of Victorias Amazonicas. Both images celebrate the symmetries and repetitive structures in nature, evoking the sacred mathematics so representative of Islamic art and architecture. Yet, even the majestic Hassan II Mosque has been affected by the passage of time and the elements.  Water, the memory of the dead fawn and the roar of nature's power aim to remind us all that everything in existence is a container and then a contributor to the all encompassing web of life.

Practiqué lo que prediqué y me fui a disfrutar del fin del mes de Mayo, explorando las maravillas de la primavera en el Norte de California. Hallé alimento para la mente, el cuerpo y el alma. Aprendí que la Bahía Este es un mundo perdido que está en constante movimiento, tectónica y morfológicamente. El Jardín de Rosas de Berkeley ofrece una visita exploratoria que deleita los sentidos con más de 250 variedades de rosas, y pude seguir las huellas del Hombre y la Mujer Verde en su diseño y sus tesoros botánicos. Luego, hallé los equivalentes humanos de la entrega a la vida y sus poderosas corrientes en el Parque Histórico Jack London, donde el legado de las vidas de Jack y Charmian London sugiere poderosas preguntas: ¿Qué significa ser valiente y atrevido hoy? ¿Cómo vives tu propia historia? ¿Qué te hace sentir como un capullo en pleno florecimiento? ¡Disfrútalo!

I practiced what I preached and I went a-Maying, exploring the gifts of spring in Northern California. I found fuel for the mind, the body and soul. I learned that the East Bay is a lost world which is always on the move, tectonically and morphologically speaking. The Berkeley Rose Garden offers an exploratory visit that delights the senses with more than 250 varieties of roses, and I could follow the footsteps of the Green Man and Woman in its design and botanical treasures. I then found the human equivalents of this surrender to life and its powerful currents, at the Jack London State Historic Park, where the legacy and narratives of Jack and Charmian London's lives prompt the questions: What is it to be brave and daring today? How do you live your own story? What makes you feel like a flower in rapturous bloom? Enjoy!
