Q: When is a photography podcast, not a photography podcast?
A: When it's actually just a bunch of recordings from a four day trip to County Cork (in a gale). Back in the day, we used to occasionally put out episodes that were made while we were out taking pictures. They were always quite popular, relatively speaking. And so as we return to your ears, this is an extension of that format and covers four days spent being blown about on, and occasionally photographing, the Sheep's Head Peninsula in County Cork, Ireland. If you'd like to see a few of the pictures made along the way, they're here - https://barnabynutt.com/2022/02/28/ireland-the-sheeps-head-peninsula-in-storm-franklin/ Get in touch: https://www.instagram.com/barnaby_nutt/ https://www.instagram.com/humbersetfoto/

Episode 24 - I Am Not A Street Photographer.

In this episode, Ian cobbles together audio recordings made over a period of a month that describe his experience of attending a street/reportage photography course.
It's been an eventful month, that kicked off with a photography workshop, followed by a knee operation and an aborted trip to northern Italy. As the dust settled, it was finally time to put together my thoughts on the course and share them with you.

You can see my pictures from the day here: https://barnabynutt.com/2020/02/22/dublin-street-photography/

Episode 23 - A Couple of Podcasts Recommendations

A short recording from a forest, by a holy well, in County Kerry.
In it, Ian talks about his two favourite photography podcasts, neither of which are about gear!

They are:
1. Grant Scott's A Photographic Life - for his latest book, mentioned in the show, click here
2. Ben Smith's A Small Voice, Conversations with Photographers

See more of Ian's words and pictures on his blog: https://barnabynutt.com/
and check out Svein's website here: http://www.humbersetfoto.com/

And yes, the background sound in that final wrap-up piece is the next named storm (Dennis) beating against the windows as I recorded...

Episode 22 - Free Film!

Welcome to episode 22. It's the first time that Svein and I have had a chat for almost 4 months, and we update on what we've been upto in the intervening period, and our upcoming plans for exhibitions.

We also launch PUSHED, a collaborative project to share a bulk roll of Agfa APX400 film to photographers around the world to use and enjoy. Everyone's favourite pictures will end up in a zine. It's like the Kodak 2238 project that you'll have heard about on the show previously, the difference being, and the only limitation on your use of the film, is that all pictures have to be pushed.

Drop us a message on Flickr (the link is below), via the Anchor app or though our socials and we'll put together a list of the first twenty shooters that respond and take it from there.

Where possible, we'll try to make the whole thing FREE to those taking part - we might just need a little help with postage.

Anyway, let us know before March 15th if you'd like to get on board or if you have any questions...

(Yes, it really is FREE FILM!)

Episode 21 - Cathal McNaughton

In this episode, Ian records his first solo interview, making his debut with a Pulitzer Prize winner no less!
He speaks with Cathal McNaughton about his life and career (so far) as a photojournalist, his thoughts on 'fake news' and the changing state of the news media. You can also enjoy his Irish pronunciation of 'film'.

Cathal McNaughton is a multi-award-winning photojournalist currently based in Ireland. After winning the Pulitzer Prize in 2018 for his coverage of the Rohingya refugee crisis in Myanmar and Bangladesh, Cathal relocated back to Ireland where he is continuing his work documenting people and places.

Previously Cathal was chief photographer for Reuters in India and has travelled extensively in Asia covering news stories of world importance. He also worked for Reuters in Europe, the Press Association and The Daily Telegraph - and his work regularly features in leading publications across the globe.

Cathal’s photography has won him major accolades including POYI, U.K Press Photographer of the Year, Royal Photographer of the Year and Environmental Photographer of the Year. His work capturing the struggle of the exiled Rohingya Muslims saw him awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Photography in New York in 2018.

Cathal leads master classes, workshops and conferences in universities and travels worldwide talking about the role of the media in divided societies, and the importance of factual journalism in the world of social media.

Check out his website: https://www.cathal-mcnaughton.com/

Twitter: https://twitter.com/Cathal1978

Thanks to Cathal for taking the time to speak to us and allowing us to use one of his images for the episode's artwork.

We hope that you're enjoying the mix of episodes that we're releasing at the moment - interviews, field reports and occasionally, even the two of us on the same show at the same time! As usual, let us have your feedback and ideas of what you'd like to see on the show. As long as it fits our brief of being more about projects, ideas and motivations rather than gear, we'd love to hear them.

Episode 19.5 - Not Just Blatant Self-Promotion

Previously, in episode 19 of the Viewfinder Vikings, Ian described the process of making a zine by recording his day out photographing work, and subsequent processing and production steps. We had lots of great feedback on that episode, and several people wanting more details of the process steps and creative choices involved.

Well, earlier this week Ian had the opportunity to talk to the Sunny 16 Film Photography Podcast hosts, Ade and Graeme on episode 185 of their show. He answered questions about the process as they prepared to produce their first collaborative zine. It was an 80 minute conversation and Ian was able to explore the process in more details than on VV19.

Rather than blatant self-promotion, we like to think of this cross-posting of another podcast as a service to listeners of episode 19 who had questions. Of course, if you still have questions on how to make your first zine, please do get in touch.

Anyway, if you're already a Sunny16 subscriber and have heard this week's show, there's nothing new here for you other than a brief introduction. If not, hit play and enjoy.

Episode 19 - Taking Away The Excuses Between You and Your First Zine

A solo episode where Ian Barnaby Nutt talks you through the process of creating a photozine.

He demonstrates that the subject matter of your zine doesn't need to be a lifetime's work or some conceptual art piece, but can be as simple as YOU want it to be. He also talks about how to prepare your images prior to sending on to your chosen printing company.

If you've always wanted to put out a zine but worried that your work isn't ready, find out how you can get a FREE copy of the zine that Ian is working on during the episode that might provide the inspiration you need to take your first steps.
