The Power of Personal Branding

As a photographer or videographer, all too often we create content for our clients and then neglect documenting our own practices and environments.  Let’s not forget, or under appreciate the power of personal branding.

Welcome to the Visual Storytelling podcast, I’m sure, like me you hear the words personal branding all too often, but what does this truly mean?

This is exactly what I discuss in this episode, but, if you haven't got 5 minutes and 29 seconds to spare, in short personal branding is,

Being recognisable without a logo or name.

Being present; and

Being visible.

For a more in depth breakdown of this, check out this episode.

Thank you for lending me your ear, I genuinely appreciate your time, don’t forget to follow the visual storytelling podcast and until next time,

Streamline Your Photography Process

Over the last four episodes we’ve discovered the common topics business have difficulty with when it come to photography, as well as broken each down to give you the best chance of overcoming them.  In this final episode let’s create a custom shot list and explore some tools to streamline your photography process.

Step 1: Create a Custom Shot List

A shot list ensures you capture all the essential images you need for different business purposes. What I’m about to share with you can be used as a customisable template based on your business type and goals.

1. Brand & Marketing Images

✔ Company logo in different settings (office, signage, packaging)

✔ Office exterior & interior shots

✔ Action shots of employees at work

✔ Behind-the-scenes photos of production or services

✔ Customer interaction (if applicable)

2. Product Photography (For E-commerce & Promotions)

✔ Individual product shots (front, back, side, top-down)

✔ Close-ups of textures, details, or packaging

✔ Lifestyle shots (products in use, styled setups)

✔ Size comparison images (e.g., holding a product in hand)

✔ Group shots (different products together)

3. Headshots & Team Photos

✔ Professional headshots of leadership and team members

✔ Group/team photos (formal and casual)

✔ Candid shots of team collaboration

✔ Staff working in their environment

4. Social Media & Content Marketing

✔ Behind-the-scenes (workshop, team culture, process shots)

✔ User-generated content (if applicable)

✔ Seasonal/holiday-themed images

✔ Flat lays (aesthetic overhead shots for Instagram)

✔ Memorable event moments (if applicable)

5. Event Photography

✔ Keynote speakers or presenters

✔ Candid moments of attendees engaging

✔ Wide shots of the event space

✔ Branded materials (banners, signs, merchandise)

✔ Team and guest interactions

Action: Pick the categories most relevant to your business and create a detailed shot list for your next photoshoot.

Step 2: Select the Right Photography Tools

Step 3: Finalise & Implement

Folks, I hope you’ve enjoyed this series and have found it helpful.  I love answering your photography related questions, so if you have anything you would like answered or discussed, then ask away and I’ll do my utmost to provide you with a to the point response that will hopefully not only answer your question, but offer you clarity as well.  You can leave a question here on the podcast or contact me through either X or Threads @GaryFernon.

The Differences Between An SLR and Mirrorless Camera?

You may be in the market for a new camera, and can’t decide whether to buy a DSLR or mirrorless camera, or simply wish to understand the difference between the two. Well, in short, SLR cameras have a mirror that bounces the picture up to you, whereas with a mirrorless camera you're seeing what the sensor sees.

In this episode I take a deeper look into the positives and negatives of both.

Some Disadvantages of Telephoto Lenses

Welcome to the Visual Storytelling podcast. In this episode I discuss the disadvantages of telephoto lenses. Don't worry, it's not all doom and gloom as I also touch upon some of the advantages and their key benefits.

If you’re in the market for a telephoto lens, my recommendation would be to try before you buy.  Do your due diligence before hand, understand why you need one and then research the best telephoto that suits your requirements, then hire one over the course of a few days to see whether you were right.  This way you save yourself a lot of time and money.
