Today on What’s My Frame, I’m joined by award-winning director and producer DeMane Davis. This conversation has so much heart, insight, and encouragement—it’s the perfect start to our year. From the way DeMane creates a culture of kindness on her sets to the creative community that has supported her career, this conversation is a beautiful example of following your dreams, preparing for opportunities, and understanding how thoughts become things. DeMane Davis is an award-winning television director, producer, and commercial director who has an overall creative deal with Warner Brothers Television Group. Under this pact, Davis first served as co-executive producer/producing director of Ava DuVernay's DC Comics series "Naomi" for the CW Network. She helmed multiple episodes (including the series finale) and oversaw the show's directing team. Soon after, she directed the pilot and second episode of the NBC missing persons drama "Found" from Nkechi Okoro Carroll and Greg Berlanti. Davis received a Gracies Awards Honorable Mention for her work on "Found" and returned in their final season to direct the penultimate episode. She is now working as Executive Producer/Producing Director on the acclaimed drama series "Brilliant Minds," the TV series inspired by the work of neuroscientist and author Dr. Oliver Sacks, played by Zachary Quinto.
In 2020, Davis produced and directed the last two episodes of the four-part Emmy-nominated Netflix limited series "Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker." The period drama starred Octavia Spencer, Blair Underwood and won three NAACP Image Awards, including Outstanding TV Movie, Limited Series or Dramatic Special. In 2020 and 2021, she was co-executive producer on the CBS drama "Clarice," the television sequel to the Academy Award winning film "The Silence of the Lambs," and directed the two-part season finale.
Davis began her career writing and directing independent features. Both of her films premiered in Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival internationally at Edinburgh. She's best known for "Lift," the story of a "booster" or professional shoplifter, which was selected for the prestigious Sundance Director's and Screenwriter's Labs. It starred Kerry Washington in her first leading role. "Lift" was honored with two Spirit Award nominations before airing originally on Showtime.
Davis was working on teleplays and freelancing as an advertising copywriter when the prolific director and producer Ava DuVernay ("ORIGIN," "When They See Us" literally "slipped into her DMs. DuVernay asked her to helm an episode of her groundbreaking series, "Queen Sugar" (OWN). Davis, of course, agreed and arrived at the "Queen Sugar " production office on crutches (who has time for a broken ankle?). Later that summer, DuVernay asked Davis to be Producing Director on the third season of "Queen Sugar." She directed the celebrated premiere where Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) learns he's not the father of his son, as well as two more episodes while overseeing DuVernay's all female, first-time-TV-directing sisterhood. She was also one of a handful of directors asked to return by DuVernay to direct two episodes of the final acclaimed season of "Queen Sugar" in 2022.
Davis has directed the GLAAD Media Award nominated series, "The Red Line" (CBS), episodes of "You" and "The Girls on the Bus" for HBO/MAX. She also helmed "For the People," and multiple episodes of fan favorites "How to Get Away with Murder" and "Station 19"
When not directing, Davis splits her time between writing and being involved with several philanthropic endeavors including ABCD Boston (an organization dedicated to eradicating poverty), The Innocence Project and the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism.
Today on Whats My Frame I'm joined by Andrew Fleming. Andrew is a highly accomplished producer, director and screenwriter, most recently known for executive producing and directing the global hit series EMILY IN PARIS. Today Andy and I chat about directing the pilot of EMILY, exploring her world and the exciting new cities and storylines coming to Season 5.
A frequent collaborator of Darren Star, Fleming also directed the pilot and additional episodes of Star’s series UNCOUPLED, starring Neil Patrick Harris, and directed the pilot and served as executive producer of the Netflix series INSATIABLE, starring Debby Ryan.
On the feature side, Fleming co-wrote and directed the seminal political satire DICK, starring Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, and Will Ferrell as well as cult-favorite genre film THE CRAFT, starring Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True. He also co-wrote and directed HAMLET 2, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and wrote and directed the Sundance hit film THREESOME, and Paul Rudd/Steve Coogan comedy IDEAL HOME. Fleming was also the director of the Emma Roberts NANCY DREW feature, and the Michael Douglas/Albert Brooks comedy THE IN-LAWS.
He has directed the television pilots for such shows as GROSSE POINTE, DIFFICULT PEOPLE, ODD MOM OUT, BAD JUDGE, as well as UNCOUPLED. He has also directed episodes for ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, NEW GIRL, RED OAKS, LADY DYNAMITE, YOUNGER & Dolly Parton's HEARTSTRINGS among others.

Today on What's My Frame I'm joined by Director, Melissa Kosar. Melissa has been a recurring director on primetime hits like Abbott Elementary and The Goldbergs. She was Co-Executive Producer / Director on season two of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers for Disney+. On ABC, she has directed Black-ish, American Housewife, The Wonder Years, and The Middle.
Melissa is a Chicago native and knew she wanted to pursue a career in production after watching a behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of Back To The Future II in her 7th grade technology class. She grew up with a love for sports, movies, art, theater, and music which all meld into her passion for storytelling. Melissa approaches directing as a creative artist with a technical eye, and combines her athletic intuition and instincts she learned as a former athlete and coach into her methods as a director.

Today on What's My Frame I'm joined by Britton Payne. Britton is an entertainment attorney, recently of Warner Bros. Animation and Nickelodeon. On the side, Brit regularly presents at comic cons and elsewhere about autism and pop culture, including "Authentically Creating Autistic Characters," "Autism in Comic Books," and "After 50 Years, Why do Spidey Super Stories Comics Still Matter to Autistic Kids and Everybody Else?."
This year, Brit started The Autism Scene, a nonprofit advocating for the inclusion of explicitly autistic characters in kids pop culture. This winter, The Autism Scene is running the AuSPEC AWARDS, a kids animated series spec script competition, which requires a series regular meaningfully interacting with an explicitly autistic character. Brit and his wife Alice are active community members of The Frostig School in Pasadena, which is dedicated to helping children, teens and young adults with learning differences live and learn to their full potential.

Today on Whats My Frame I'm joined by acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Daniel Pearle. Daniel joins us to chat about his newest project THE BEAST IN ME where he served as writer and executive producer. We take a deep dive into creative process, research and understanding your character's voice.
Daniel's plays have been produced and developed at Lincoln Center Theater, London’s Old Vic, The Vineyard, Ars Nova, and at regional theaters around the country. His play A Kid Like Jake premiered in a sold-out run at LCT3/Lincoln Center Theater (NY Times Critic’s Pick). Other plays include Freefall (finalist, 2017 O’Neill Playwrights Conference), Remote Viewing (semi-finalist, 2015 O’Neill Playwrights Conference), and The Prodigies (semi-finalist, 2013 O’Neill Playwrights Conference).
Daniel’s feature film adaptation of A Kid Like Jake premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. The film is directed by Silas Howard and stars Claire Danes, Jim Parsons, and Octavia Spencer. Other film credits include: Minyan (2020) and Oliver Sipple (currently in development with Mad Chance Productions).
Daniel served as co-showrunner and executive producer on season 2 of Fox’s Accused and is currently a writer and executive producer on Netflix’s upcoming The Beast in Me. Other TV credits include Impeachment: American Crime Story (FX) and One of Us is Lying (Peacock). Daniel was awarded the 2018 Humanitas New Voices Grant for emerging writers in television. He is an alum of Ars Nova’s Play Group and a MacDowell Fellow. He earned his BA from Harvard University and his MFA from The New School for Drama.
Today on What's My Frame I'm joined by writer-director and podcaster GG Hawkins. Her directorial debut I Really Love My Husband had its world premiere at the 2025 SXSW festival. Today we talk about specificity of chemistry, GG's writing and creative process, the importance of finding the right educators and creative mentors for you finding your super power as a creative.
GG is also known for hosting and producing the popular podcast “No Film School” where she interviews filmmakers in all departments to help educate filmmakers globally…”No Film School” required.
GG directed the short Yes, Daddy, which has 7 million views on YouTube. She also wrote and directed G.U.F., an episode of You Feeling This?, which premiered at Tribeca in 2023. She received the Channie Award for Best Directing for her web series Kinda Flakey. Her short film An Aspirational Space was awarded the Robert De Niro Scholarship. She is a fellow of the Film Independent Episodic Lab and the Moonshot Initiative Pilot Accelerator.
Today on What's My Frame I'm joined by Broadway, film, and television director Sammi Cannold. Sammi is one of Forbes Magazine's 30 Under 30 in Hollywood & Entertainment, one of Variety's 10 Broadway Stars to Watch, one of Town & Country's Creative Aristocracy, and a Drama Desk Award winner. In 2025, she made her episodic directing debut helming Episode 2204 of Grey's Anatomy, was named a Sundance Writers Intensive Fellow, and was selected for Dolby and Antigravity Academy's Short Film Studio.
Alongside her husband, she is developing her first feature film, The Homecoming, with the Sundance Institute. In theater and opera, she has directed over 15 full-scale productions on Broadway, at the Kennedy Center, at Lincoln Center, and beyond. Additional: A.R.T. Jennifer Schwalenberg is a New Mexico Casting Director based in Santa Fe. She began her casting career in Los Angeles in 1995, working for prominent commercial casting director, Beth Holmes. She spent five years honing the craft of traditional commercial casting while also scouting the streets for directors who favored “real people.” During her tenure at BHC, Jennifer worked on hundreds of national commercials, including numerous Super Bowl campaigns.
She eventually left L.A. for Santa Fe, her geographic dream, hired by the New Mexico Film Office under Governor Bill Richardson to create a Native American casting database to showcase the state’s tribal members.
Jennifer served as Deputy Director of the New Mexico Film Office where she devoted her time for eight years recruiting and servicing productions, marketing New Mexico, its communities and resources, coordinating scouts throughout the state, managing the tax credit and loan programs, and assisting producers, studios and networks throughout production and the incentive process.
She went back to her love of casting and joined the Midthunder Casting team from 2013 to 2019, where she worked on dozens of feature films, television productions, local and national commercials. Jennifer opened Casting by Jen in 2019, with highlights including local casting on four seasons of Dark Winds, The Night Driver, Lone Wolf, Olmo, and Rez Ball.
She is a Member of the Casting Society of America, Television Academy, and Governor’s Council on Film & Media Industries. Jennifer is passionate about animal welfare and her three large rescue dogs are often seen in her virtual casting sessions.

Married writing team Kat Likkel and John Hoberg have been professional screenwriters for over 25 years. They’ve written half hours, features, dramas, and are currently in development on a stage musical with the Michael Cassel group. In addition to that, Kat and John recently set up a fairytale musical series at Disney+ with Dan Fogelman producing and music & lyrics by Alen Menken and Glenn Slater. Additionally, over the past few years, John has been serving as EP/Co-Showrunner on Hulu’s Emmy nominated hit drama series “Paradise,” and Kat has recently finished her first novel which is out to publishers. Before that they spent nearly 3 years working at Pixar writing the Academy Award nominated movie “Elemental,” and have a long list of television credits including shows like “My Name is Earl,” “black-ish” and the medieval musical comedy “Galavant” as well as cult hits like “Better off Ted” and “Downward Dog” -- the first network half hour to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. They split time between Pasadena, and Solvang, CA where they have 6 goats... let’s just say their pandemic got weird.

Today on What's My Frame I'm joined by Casting Director & Spanish Dialect Consultant, Miranda Martinez. Miranda began her career in Dallas, Texas, working in commercial casting before collaborating with renowned casting director Jo Edna Boldin,CSA on major studio films including The Lone Ranger and The Last Stand. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2012, Miranda expanded her credits as the Los Angeles Casting Director for the independent feature Icaros: A Vision, where she spent three weeks in the Amazon jungle of Iquitos, Peru, working closely with the local cast of native Shipibo-Conibo people to help shape authentic performances.
She has contributed to high-profile projects with acclaimed casting director April Webster, CSA including Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Lisey’s Story, Clarice, Locke & Key, and Sacred Lies. On Jack Ryan, she also served as a Spanish dialect consultant, advising on accent accuracy and subtitle translation during post-production. Fluent in Spanish and raised in Panama, Miranda brings deep linguistic expertise to her work, specializing in Spanish dialect consulting for multilingual productions.
Her background as an actor, having appeared in national commercials and independent films, gives her a performer’s perspective that informs her casting approach. Miranda occasionally teaches actor workshops, most recently at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, where participants had the option to perform in either English or Spanish. She is also committed to supporting emerging filmmakers, regularly serving as Casting Director for short films at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts.

Today on What's My Frame I'm joined by Director, Hanelle M. Culpepper. One of Indiewire’s television Directors To Know, the energetic and unflappable Hanelle Culpepper's credits range from superhero action adventures to thrillers to genre films to character-driven dramas. As director of the Star Trek: Picard pilot, Hanelle became the first woman to launch a Star Trek series in its 53-year history. In 2021, she won an NAACP Image Award for her work on Picard. In 2022, she was nominated for Netflix’s True Story starring Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes, and again in 2023 for The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey starring Samuel Jackson.
Her recent work includes the Disney+ series Star Wars: The Acolyte, Neil Gaiman’s Amazon series Anansi Boys, Dan Fogelman's Hulu series Paradise, starring Sterling K Brown, along with NCIS: Origins and Matlock.
Hanelle earned her B.A. from Lake Forest College and her M.A. from USC’s Annenberg School. After working as the assistant for Oscar-winning writer/director Callie Khouri, she completed AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women, launching her as a director to watch. Her short A Single Rose won numerous awards and screened at film festivals worldwide, including the 2004 ICG Showcase at the Cannes Film Festival.
A Single Rose plus Hanelle’s viral short film spoof Six and the City led to her first feature: the supernatural thriller Within, starring Mia Ford, Sammi Hanratty, Sam Jaeger, Lori Heuring, Brent Sexton, and featuring Aisha Hinds. The film won Outstanding Feature Film at the Big Bear Horror Film Festival and had its television premiere on Lifetime. Hanelle went on to helm multiple thrillers, including Murder on the 13th Floor starring Tessa Thompson.
Hanelle’s television career took off after NBC Universal’s Directing Initiative led to an episode of Parenthood. Her work has since spanned nearly 40 series across a range of genres. In 2019, she was selected for the inaugural class of ReFrame and earned Variety’s Inclusion Impact Honor.
Hanelle proudly serves on the TV Academy’s Director Peer Group Executive Committee, and as an alternate for the DGA’s National Board and Western Directors Council. When not on set, Hanelle shepherds up-and-coming directors as the Guest Artistic Director for AFI’s DWW+ Class of 2024-2025.

Today on What's My Frame I'm joined by Writer & Executive Producer Richard Keith. Richard was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, and grew up in the small mountain town of Beech Mountain, where he was a competitive alpine ski racer through high school before moving to New York to pursue a career in entertainment. He began as an actor, appearing in dozens of commercials and recurring on series such as NCIS and Grey’s Anatomy.
Richard later transitioned to writing and producing. His first feature, Fall, developed with Rob Reiner, never made it to the screen. He’s now developing it into a novel with his longtime writing partner, Erin Cardillo. The pair began collaborating in the mid-2010s, and their first pilot won the New York Television Festival’s comedy pilot competition, landing them a development deal at FOX. Shortly after, they partnered with Alloy Entertainment to create Significant Mother for CW Seed, which was picked up to series by The CW and premiered on August 3, 2015.
Since then, Cardillo & Keith have sold more than ten broadcast pilots to NBC, ABC, FOX, HBO Max, and The CW—including three in a single pilot season, prompting Deadline in 2019 to call them “the most prolific writers in broadcast television.” Their first hourlong pilot, Life Sentence, developed with Doozer Productions and Warner Bros. Television, went to series and premiered on The CW in 2018 (now streaming on Tubi). In 2019, the duo signed a two-year overall deal at Warner Bros., focusing on adaptations and IP for the studio, under their banner, In Good Company.
Beyond development, Cardillo & Keith served as Co-EPs on Fuller House and are currently Executive Producers on Netflix’s longest-running drama series, Virgin River, now entering its eighth season.
In features, the duo adapted Katherine Center’s bestselling novel The Bodyguard into a film that is set to star Jared Padalecki and they have two other features in development they're not allowed to talk about.
When not in the writers’ room, Keith lives in Mammoth Lakes, California, with his wife, two kids, two dogs, and a reasonable amount of cats. And he still ski races with the adult masters team—because growing up is overrated.

Andrew previously worked with Barden/Schnee Casting on television shows for Apple TV+ (the breakout series, PALM ROYALE), Paramount+ (SCHOOL SPIRITS), and ABC (ALASKA DAILY), as well as many films including the upcoming feature, CODE 3 (Rainn Wilson, Lil Rel Howery, and Aimee Carrero); and EZRA (Robert De Niro, Bobby Cannavale, Rose Byrne).
Additional selected casting credits include: the FX limited series, THE PATIENT (starring Steve Carell & Domhnall Gleeson); Aaron Sorkin’s Oscar-nominated Netflix feature film, THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7; and the first season of the Emmy-nominated Hulu series, RAMY.
Andrew has also been the casting director for many short films that have competed at festivals including SXSW, BFI, SIFF, Palm Springs ShortFest, HollyShorts, Vienna Shorts, and many others.
As an actor, Andrew was a series regular on the comedy series, 86’d, for BRIC TV. He also has appeared in many national commercials, and was the lead role in the second season premiere of Homicide City on Investigation Discovery.
A BFA graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, Andrew has performed in many stage productions, as well. Selected credits include: Kenneth Branagh and Rob Ashford's epic Macbeth at the Park Avenue Armory; the Lincoln Center Festival's Russian-language adaptation of Miss Julie (dir. Thomas Ostermeier) at NY City Center. He also appeared in several productions with The Drilling Company, and received praise in the New York Times for his performance in their version of As You Like It. Regionally, he spent a season with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, as well as one summer at Boston's Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, in their production of Coriolanus.

Today on What's My Frame I'm joined by filmmaker and casting director, David Guglielmo. David specializes in independent films. As a casting director, he’s known for festival hits THE STANDOFF AT SPARROW CREEK (TIFF Premiere), RUN HIDE FIGHT (Venice Premiere), and SUITABLE FLESH (Tribeca Premiere).
He served as Head of Casting for the legendary horror brand FANGORIA, as they launched their first studio. Additionally, he’s directed three thrillers: NO WAY TO LIVE, HOSPITALITY, and most recently, LOVE BOMB. Other producing titles include the indie darling THE LAST STOP IN YUMA COUNTY and the upcoming gothic western, KILLING FAITH, starring Guy Pearce and Bill Pullman.

Today on What's My Frame I'm joined by Casting Director, Betsy Ware Fippinger. Betsy has trained under some of the best Casting Directors in New York, including Meredith Tucker and Ellen Lewis. As a Casting Associate and Assistant she worked on projects directed by Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Bo Burnham, Greg Mottola, and Lynn Shelton.
Betsy won an Artios Award for her work as the Casting Associate on the pilot episode of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’. As a Casting Director, Betsy cast Sarah Friedland’s ‘Familiar Touch’ (in theaters now, and winner of three awards at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, including Best Debut Film) and co-cast Nicholas Colia’s ‘Griffin in Summer’ (winner of three awards at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, including Best Narrative Feature).
She also cast the lead youth roles for Kelly Fremon Craig’s ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,’ for which she won her second Artios Award. Before entering casting, Betsy worked at HBO and The William Morris Agency, and taught at Indiana University. She graduated with a BA in Film from Wesleyan University in 2003.
