Three Big Things - 11/21
1. A CDC website update is raising concerns about misinformation. The site now says, the claim 'vaccines do not cause autism', is not an evidence-based claim, because studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism. The website used to state, studies have shown that there is no link between receiving vaccines and developing autism spectrum disorders. Today, major medical group including the American Academy of Pediatrics are pushing back on the changes. 2. The U.S. Coast Guard is engaging in pushback following a week of controversy. A newly published policy released earlier this week seemed to suggest that it was doing away with classifying some extremely offensive symbols as hate, including swastikas and nooses. The memo comes as the military at times has struggled with combatting extremism among service members. A 2020 Pentagon report found that while extremist views were not widespread in the military, the issue was still urgent due to the ability of people with military experience to carry out “high-impact events.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed the idea of there being an issue with extremism in the military. 3. The holiday travel season starts today. Tens of millions of people are expected to pack into cars and airplanes for Thanksgiving. Some good news if you're driving, gas prices are hovering around the lowest holiday level since the pandemic in 2020. The average for a gallon of regular is $2.78 in Wisconsin today. Some additional good news, renting a car this Thanksgiving is 15% cheaper than last year, according to AAA.
