Over the weekend, the Chicago Cubs have landed veteran right-handed reliever Phil Maton on a reported two-year deal (with a club option for a third year), according to multiple sources.
Maton is coming off a breakout 2025 season, posting a 2.79 ERA over 63 games split between the Cardinals and Rangers. He’s known for a four-pitch mix — cutter, curve, sweeper, and sinker — and has elite swing-and-miss stuff, despite not blowing hitters away with sheer velocity.
Reports suggest the Cubs aren’t done. They’re expected to add more impact relievers, especially another experienced arm to round out the late-inning group.

Last week at the MLB General Managers Meetings, the Chicago Cubs laid the groundwork for a pivotal offseason — and pitching was at the center of their plans.
Cubs president Jed Hoyer made it crystal clear: their top offseason goal is to add arms. They've reportedly shown interest in Dylan Cease, Tatsuya Imai, and Michael King. The Cubs declined Shota Imanaga's option, he proceeded to decline the player option and now he has to decide if he will accept the qualifying offer. Hoyer didn’t rule out re-signing him, but the FO seems open to exploring other pitching options too. The Cubs used the GM Meetings to signal a very active offseason, with a laser focus on pitching.
Cody and Blake break it all down based on reporting done by The Athletic.

It’s going to be on the pitching side.” President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer echoed the message: “We’re going to have an active offseason … largest focus will be on pitching.” The need is for both the rotation and bullpen. With some key arms injured and options declined (like Shota Imanaga), there’s a clear gap to fill. After reaching the playoffs for the first time in a full season since 2018, the Cubs want to build on that progress — and pitching is the area with the most opportunity for meaningful improvement. The trade market and free‐agent market will both be in play. Hoyer and Hawkins both mentioned exploring multiple avenues.Join Cody and Blake as they discuss all the latest rumors and news coming out of the GM Meetings.
