Галоўнай прычынай забароны было тое, пра што пазней распавёў сам аўтар: «…гэта ці не адзіная аўтабіяграфічная аповесць, дзе ўсё ці амаль усё — праўда. Але менавіта тое, што праўда, і стала непрымальным для часу сацрэалізму. Можна сказаць, што галоўным ворагам гэтага славутага метаду была праўда». Пра гэтую праўду, быкаўскую праўду, добра сказаў крытык Ігар Дзядкоў: «Амаль невытлумачальна, чаму — праўда. Чаму ў Быкава заўсёды — праўда?» І хоць пад няўмольны каток савецкай цэнзуры трапілі практычна ўсе буйныя творы пісьменніка, якія былі напісаны ўключна да сярэдзіны 1980-х гг., аднак найбольшыя страты панесла, мусіць, аповесць «Мёртвым не баліць»: тут па цэнзурна-рэдактарскіх меркаваннях было зроблена каля двухсот скарачэнняў. У такім скалечаным выглядзе яна друкавалася да апошняга часу. І толькі пасля смерці Васіля Быкава дзякуючы ягонаму біёграфу Сяргею Шапрану ўпершыню была апублікавана ў аўтарскай рэдакцыі, з узнаўленнем усіх купюр.
