    Hoaxed
    Tortoise Media

Introducing... Hoaxed, the new series from Alexi Mostrous and Tortoise, who brought you Sweet Bobby.

In 2014, two children told police a shocking story: that they were being abused by a Satanic cult; a cult headed by their father and by parents and teachers at their school in the wealthy London suburb of Hampstead. The story was a lie. But on the internet, that didn't matter.

Hoaxed is an investigation into one of Britain's most serious-ever conspiracy theories. A story about a modern-day Satanic panic; about the victims whose lives were destroyed and about the conspiracists who spread the lie around the world. Oh, and it's about our hunt for the perpetrators - the people who forced the kids to lie - the ones who started it all.

All 6 episodes are available now to listen for free. You can listen to the full series ad-free and get access to exclusive bonus content by downloading the Tortoise audio app or subscribing to Tortoise+ on Apple podcasts. Now it's time to share some of the best recordings with you, and allow you to listen to first hand accounts of pivotal moments in Ireland's national and social history.

No me provoquen: Breaking the Palace
    Sonoro
No Me Provoquen: Breaking The Palace is the testimony of the woman who achieved the unthinkable: bringing a dark-skinned, wildly popular artist to a white, conservative palace. In 1990, an arts official witnessed Juan Gabriel's electrifying performance at a rural venue and became determined to bring Mexico's most beloved artist to its most elite stage. This podcast reveals her relentless fight against institutional prejudice, bureaucratic roadblocks, and production disasters to stage what was once dismissed as "an assault on pure art" but became one of the most iconic concerts in Mexican history: Juan Gabriel en Bellas Artes. An original Sonoro production featuring exclusive accounts from the people who made history the night Mexico's high culture learned to let loose. Listen to this original production from Sonoro, featuring exclusive testimonies from those who made possible the most joyful dance the Palace of Fine Arts has ever seen.

    Our Common Nature
    WNYC
When the world stopped in 2020, cellist Yo-Yo Ma started thinking about how music can reconnect people to the natural world. In this limited podcast series, Yo-Yo goes around the country to places where people have deep connections to the earth and begins to play. Host Ana González joins him to uncover stories of the ways that culture binds us to nature, from Maine to Appalachia and Hawaii. The result is a seven-episode series that fuses music, personal narratives, and local histories from across the United States. We travel into the world's largest cave ... to hear the Louisville symphony orchestra perform. In Hawai‘i, an elder says her “chants are our contribution to the human orchestra of the world.” And the Wabanaki teach us about their duty to welcome the sun each day in Maine. For Yo-Yo Ma, who has spent his entire career indoors, a connection to the natural world is “what doesn’t exist in my life, that I know is missing.” Our Common Nature helps to bridge the gap – for Yo-Yo and for all of us.

Learn from my guests how to rebel, think differently and resist social contagion. Deep Water | Tortoise Investigates
    The Observer

Three years ago travel writer Lydia Gard discovered freediving almost by accident. It’s an extreme and beautiful sport defined by one simple objective: to dive as deep as you can on one single breath. Record holders are now routinely diving to more than 120 metres, pushing the sport and their bodies to find out what’s humanly possible.

Through her coach, Lydia was drawn into a small but fanatical community of competition athletes all united in their drive for depth, and that’s where she stumbled on a darker side of the sport. Rumours swirled that a group of top divers were doping to get deeper, faster.

As the community began to turn on each other over the allegations, one prominent diver decided to take the law into his own hands. A secret sting operation was meant to put an end to the problem by bringing the alleged dopers out of the dark, and into the light. But the issue hasn't gone away. And now, a lot of people who’ve been too scared to speak up, are ready to talk.
