Day 36: Trials and Sanctification

James 1:2,3

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

Third sanctifying agent is “Trials we face”.

The thing that we hate most….and pray that our Lord may keep us from are the trials we face. These cleanses us more than any other.

Trials will show us our true self…..what our heart is actually processing….and our dependence on God.

Think about Israelites’ journey in wilderness. Why wilderness experiences? God can protect us from outside demonic forces like in Egypt. But he cannot protect us from ourselves. The greatest temptation that they faced is riches and milk and honey in the promised land. Trials will bring detachment to this worldly stuff. No wonder for apostle Peter…trials are very precious.

Ps 119:67

Before I was afflicted I went astray,

but now I keep your word.

Day 37: Fellowship and Sanctification

Col 3:16

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom…..

One more sanctifying agent that the Bible records is “Fellowship”. A believer is never called to be alone. There are 59 “one another” passages in the New Testament showing how fellowship has to be. As much as we need to love and encourage one another…..we need to admonish one another too. Admonishing is actually correcting (sanctifying) one another.

Interestingly, the context of this passage is with fulness of Word of God.

We all will be always ready to admonish…..but not to receive admonishing.

When was the last time you received admonishing from a fellow believer?

Matt 7:5

…first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

Day 35: Lord’s Table and Sanctification

1 Cor 11:28

Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

Second sanctifying agent is Lord’s Table.

We are admonished to do certain things when we take part in communion.

Firstly, look behind….remember the sacrifice of the Lord for a sinner like us.

Secondly, look ahead…..remember his promise of coming for his Church.

Thirdly, look within…..examine yourself critically.

In critical judgment there’s no room for rationalization or justification.

1 Cor 11:31,32

But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.

Day 34: Word and Sanctification

John 17:17

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

Now for the sanctifying agents.

First is Word of God. It’s like mirror to show us ourselves as we are. It’s like water to wash us. It’s like fire to purify us. It’s like hammer that should break us.

Word of God that is dwelling in us richly is the actual material used by the Lord for our daily sanctification.

Have you seen in this mirror lately? Looking good or is there a chance for improvement?

Day 31: Fasting and Sanctification

Ps 51:7

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;

wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Whatever the reason that triggers our fasting, it must result in our sanctification. One has to chastise his soul with fasting. Now sanctification requires removal of certain things.

Have you ever thought that purging is painful.

It’s like cutting off our right hand if convicted of sin.

Purging and pruning result in fruitful Christian life.

Sanctification requires conviction and radical willingness.

When was the last time we experienced pain in sanctification?

John 15:2

Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

Day 32: Hurdle for sanctification

Ps 95:7

For he is our God,

and we are the people of his pasture,

and the sheep of his hand.

Today, if you hear his voice,

do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,

as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,

The most important hurdle for sanctification is Hardened Heart. You see that time and again all across the scriptures.

Hardened heart, as defined by the Lord in Mark 8:17, 18….cannot see, hear, understand or remember.

Hardened heart is result of our indulgence in day to day stuff. People at Massah did exactly that. Lord called hardened heart people as rebellious people!!!!

How easily we can rebel against God!!

Lord sanctify me🙏

Heb 3:16

For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses?

Day 33: Conviction and Sanctification

John 16:8

And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:

Another most important thing in the process of sanctification is the conviction from the Holy Spirit. He convicts the non-believers of sins. He convicts the believers of righteousness and all people of judgement. When we don’t harden our hearts we get the conviction from the Lord.

When was the last time we felt that deep conviction of the Lord?

Ps 85:11

Faithfulness springs up from the ground,

and righteousness looks down from the sky.

Once a father brings his son (who was demon possessed) to the disciples for healing. But they couldn’t drive the demon out. They were given authority to drive demons out. Yet they couldn’t. So he brings his son to the Lord. He heals the son. Lord corrected father about his unbelief. And he corrected disciples about “fasting prayer”.

Even though we all have the gifts of the Holy Spirit….they are not manifested in many.

Belief and Fasting Prayer make them manifested!!!

Acts 3:16

And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.

Day 29: Fasting and Fellowship

Acts 13:3

Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

We can notice the practice of fasting in the Antioch church very clearly. When they fasted first, they were told to set Paul and Barnabas apart. Now they fasted again and this time they “laid hands on them” and sent them. This peculiar concept of “laying on of hands” is one of the powerful teachings of the Bible. That’s used to show that….we are with you….you are one with us….what we have is yours….we will support you….and so on.

No evangelist can work without the support of local church.

Praise the Lord for the supporting fellowship.

Gal 2:9

and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

This was the church at Antioch. Brothers and sisters were fasting and praying…..then they heard the voice of the Holy Spirit. There was call for ministry and there was reminder of why they were saved!!!!

While fasting:

* They heard Holy Spirit’s voice

* They were reminded of their call

* They were commissioned for work

Wow….the result of fasting prayer is indeed amazing!!!

Jeremiah 36:6

so you are to go, and on a day of fasting in the hearing of all the people in the LORD'S house you shall read the words of the LORD from the scroll that you have written at my dictation. You shall read them also in the hearing of all the men of Judah who come out of their cities.

Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, after sometime he was in ministry. Lord commanded Jeremiah to write all the things that were spoken by HIM from the beginning. All the sins of his people and all the judgments. He commanded that this written document must be made available to all people and they have to read that while fasting. Lord said…after that perhaps they may acknowledge their mistakes and seek mercy.

If they read the Word of God without fasting it would not be of much effect.

Have you noticed any difference between reading the Word of God with fasting and without fasting??

And the Israelites separated themselves from all foreigners and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers.

After Ezra came…within 5 years…..another group of people returned under the leadership of Nehemiah. Now temple was in place and wall also. People of Israel were worshiping the Lord in liberty again after so long. They started reading the book of the law daily. They realized they were sinning again and confessed their impurities with fasting. Just few years back they re-committed their lives to God and here they are again. This time they made a covenant agreement in writing.

How easy it is for followers of God to become unclean!!!!!!

How important it is to read the Word of God daily!!!!

People of Israel came in 3 groups from Babylonian captivity. First group under the leadership of Jerubbabel. Second group under the leadership of Ezra and third under the leadership of Nehemiah. The gap between first and second groups was about 75-80 years. By the time Ezra came….he was told that people of God again got into mixed marriages. This was the main reason for the cleansing during Noah’s flood, for judgement on Sodom and Gomorrah, for the backsliding of Israelites, for the backsliding of Solomon, Ahab……

Ezra fasted and prayed confessing the faithlessness of his people and for the purity.

What a fasting prayer that would have been!!!

Ezra 10:1

While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children, gathered to him out of Israel, for the people wept bitterly.

Day 22: Fasting to fight against brothers

Judges 20:26

Then all the people of Israel, the whole army, went up and came to Bethel and wept. They sat there before the LORD and fasted that day until evening, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

Some of the bizarre and ungodly events took place during the time of judges in Israel. A Levite was traveling through city of Gibeah (city of Benjamin tribe) with his concubine and servant. But people will not receive him….instead they wanted to molest him. But he sends his concubine to them and men of that city will rape and murder that concubine. He goes to his place and cuts the women’s body into 12 pieces and sends messages to all the tribes of Israel. Their rage results in “inter tribal war” among God’s people. In two days Israelites will lose 40,000 people in war against Gibeah.

After that they fast and pray.

With Lord’s guidance….they will go to war and will win a decisive war against their brethren.

Lord is not partial God….he brings justice even if they are his own people!!!

1 Pet 1:15-16

Day 21: Fast that was NOT accepted by God

2 Sam 12:16

David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground.

One of the most negative remarks on David’s life was that of iniquity he did against Uriah (Bathsheba’s Husband). Iniquity is defined as a deliberate mistake with scheming against the Law of the Lord. Consequence for that was curse from God himself. Because of that iniquity…Bathsheba became pregnant. Lord said…that David’s wives will be given to other men and his child with Bathsheba will die.

David fasted and prayed…..but Lord didn’t accept his prayer.

Sometimes, when we sin knowingly and deliberately…..even though we fast and pray that will not be accepted.

We cannot take the grace of God for granted.

Deuteronomy 4:24

So they gathered at Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before the LORD and fasted on that day and said there, “We have sinned against the LORD.” And Samuel judged the people of Israel at Mizpah.

People of Israel, during the time of Judges, did whatever was right in their sight. Lord handed them over to Philistines. They defeated Israel and took Ark of Covenant. Lord punished Philistines and they sent the ark back. People of Israel celebrated and thought theirs would be victory. But for 20 years….they were defeated continuously. Then with Samuel’s instructions….they fasted and prayed and asked the Lord for his forgiveness. Right then Lord gave them decisive victory over Philistines. They erected a stone at Mizpah and called it Ebenezer (hitherto Lord has helped us).

Fasting prayer for sanctification brought help from the Lord!!!!

Moses first fasted 40 days for receiving law and instructions. When he came down from mountain, he saw people of God indulging in Idolatry. They made golden calf and were worshipping with naked dances. After an episode of anger and breaking of original tablets with law….he fasted again for 40days and 40 nights.

This time he fasted for interceding for his people. Did you notice….the people involved in idolatry of any kind don’t usually know that they are doing that. And they usually turn against you.

You have to pray for the people that are hating you and doing things that are contrary to your liking.

Do you have any such person in your life?

Intercession is godly!!!

Day 18: First ever Fasting

Ex 24:18

Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

Israelites went into Egypt as one family (70 people) and now they came out as a nation (3 million people). Lord used Moses to lead them out. Thus far they lived as slaves. Going forward they have to live in liberty as God’s people. Lord asked Moses to come up the mountain and he taught him how to live.

That started with instruction in fasting (lesson by experience) and sanctification.

He was instructed about moral character.

And he was instructed about family life, life in society.

And he was instructed about worship.

While fasting he received all these. Even for us….we can get Lord’s direction in fasting and prayer.

Deu 9:10

And the LORD gave me the two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them were all the words that the LORD had spoken with you on the mountain out of the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.

Day 17: National Fasting!!

2 Chro 20:3

Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

Judah was being attacked by 3 nations. The 3 nation alliance tried to attack before. But Lord prevented them. This time He allowed.

Judah was outnumbered and powerless.

Fear came over them. King Jehoshaphat called for a nationwide fast and all the people (including children) fasted and sought Lord’s help. After fasting prayer they got assurance that Lord will help them and actually “The battle belongs to the Lord”. When we fight our battles on our knees….Lord will fight our battles on his feet!!!

We just have to gather the spoils while praising.

What a way to fight our battles!!!

Day 16: Fasting and Revelation

Dan 10:2-5

In those days I, Daniel, was mourning for three weeks. I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, for the full three weeks.

On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river (that is, the Tigris) I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, a man clothed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist…..

Daniel fasted for three weeks. He and his team were standing by the river….and he received revelation. In this fasting what did he receive?

Firstly, he got the revelation of the Lord himself. Can you imagine how it would be to SEE the Lord in all his radiance??!!!!

Secondly, he received the revelation about end days. Even though he was a full time government official….Lord Jesus himself called him a “prophet”.

Thirdly, he received strength…..physically and spiritually.

What a fasting that would have been!!!!!

Dan 10:12

Then he said to me, “Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words.

Day 15: Fasting for Lord’s Mercies

Dan 9:3

Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

Do you know of anyone whose lifestyle is defined by fasting prayers??

Daniel, the dearly beloved, was one such person. We were told in scriptures that he fasted and prayed multiple times. In this context, he came to know from scriptures that the 70 years time of captivity is getting to be over (this was the prophecy by Jeremiah before captivity).

Daniel fasted and prayed….again confessing for the disobedience of his family and nation….seeking mercies of the Lord towards his temple.

One astonishing thing was the way Lord sent answer to his fasting prayer. Angel Gabriel was sent SPEEDILY…..wow!!!!

Dan 9:20,21

While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before the LORD my God for the holy hill of my God, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, came to me in swift flight at the time of the evening sacrifice.

Day 14: Fasting for Vision

Nehemiah 1:11

“O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”

The longest period of fasting mentioned in the Bible is of Nehemiah’s. What did he get after so many days of fasting??

Firstly, he got vision. A vision is a picture of “what can be” by looking at “what it is currently”. Jerusalem, currently was in ruins. What it can be….a secure city with walls….a city with worship in full flow…..that’s the vision he got.

What is your vision for your church, for your family, for your finances, for your job, for your children’s future…..??

Second, he got clarity as to what is needed to realize the vision. He knows exactly what is needed.

Fasting prayer of Nehemiah resulted in clear vision and a clear plan to fulfill that vision.

Neh 2:7,8

And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors of the province Beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah, and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress of the temple, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall occupy.” And the king granted me what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me.

Fasting for Lord’s House

Nehemiah 1:4

“As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.”

Nehemiah was a cup bearer to Persian emperor. Can the most powerful world leader have a slave of enemy nation as his complete confidant that he trusted his life with??!!!

That was the character of Nehemiah….wow!!!

One day his brother, Hanani, came from Judah. Nehemiah asked about the conditions of the city of the Lord. It was not good news.

That triggered burden in Nehemiah to fast. His burden sustained and he fasted for almost 4 months!!!

Did you notice the zeal he has for Lord’s house and city???

When was the last time your fasting was triggered by the zeal for your church?

Ps 69:9; John 2:17

For zeal for your house has consumed me…..
