Volatility in marriage. Being forced to go to counseling. Taking each other for granted, but fighting their way out of it and surviving only because of their faith. Welcome to the nitty gritty of Scott and Briana Trout's marriage. This is a new thread on the Between Two Worlds podcast where host Scott Trout and his wife Briana are interviewed by someone else to try to bring to life their beliefs and how it impacts their day to day life. Nowa O'Connell interviews Scott and Briana separately to see how they keep from taking each other for granted and what was one of the most vulnerable moments of their marriage.

"You will die as bad people if you do not believe in me" Jesus in the Book of John. Is the Bible more a book about guilt or a book about love?
Scott's Dutch Neighbor, Third Generation Agnostic, Luuk Elkhuizen sits down with Scott after reading the book of John to share the things he likes about Christianity and the things he doesn’t like. Also discussed is the difference between how the Bible describes justice and how Western society describes justice. Lastly, Scott shares quotes collected from those who think there is value in being religious.
For people of faith, how would you describe the message of the Bible?
For agnostics and atheists, do you think it is bad to judge people and call them a bad person?

Dutch People Don't Talk about Their Spiritual Beliefs, But It's Starting to Change. Is the Universe Governed by an Unknown Force Called Love or the God of Christianity? Third generation Dutch atheist-- Luuk Elkhuizen joins Scott to talk about how religion was never on his mind growing up... until now. Dutch society is so secularized that many young people are becoming increasingly curious about if there is a God and specifically what Christianity is all about. Luuk found it hard to find someone who actually believes in Christianity growing up. Now Luuk has started to read the Bible with Scott and is coming up with his own opinion about who Jesus was and what the Bible is all about.
For people of faith, how would you articulate what it means to live by love? For agnostics and atheists, do you think there is a new feedback loop happening in society with so many not being religious?

Why is 'divorce is off the table' for so many religions? Do Christian overcomplicate dating and marriage? How to make a long-distance relationship work?
Former American missionary to Kiwis in New Zealand and Friendly American with a Great Beard--- Nick Maddy shares about how he basically broke the rules to start dating his now wife, Elise; how to keep things fresh and creative during long distance relationships; and what Nick would say to someone who is hesitant to get married. "In any Christian relationship, we are to be like Jesus, completely dying to ourselves in all aspects and laying our life down for the sake of the other." Nick on the Christian view of marriage.
For people of faith, in what way did God direct your relationship if you are in one?
For agnostics and atheists, do you think Christians overcomplicate things with how they talk about marriage and relationships?

"Is it ok that I do more in you than through you" --God to Nick while on the mission field in New Zealand. Former American missionary to Kiwis in New Zealand and Friendly American with a Great Beard--- Nick Maddy shares about how he found God through the car crash of his friend in college, how he decided to give up everything for 'God', and how he had a horrible time in New Zealand as a missionary.... and might go back.
For people of faith, have you heard a call "to go" from God like Nick did, if so what did you do about it?
For agnostics and atheists, do you see any harm in the way Nick leads his life trying to "listen to God's voice"?

Scott's Youngest Brother. Gender Roles in Marriage. Complementarianism. And a Truly Christian Wedding. Ben Trout and his fiancée Lexi Wellings join Scott in the last few days of their single life. Catching them right before they got married, Scott interviews these two young lovers on how they met, how God was the centerpiece of their relationship, and how they decided to include a sword in their wedding ceremony.
Swords are pretty outdated and some may argue, so are Ben and Lexi's views of the man and woman's roles in their marriage with the man as the leader and the woman as the helpmate. Find out why they reinforced those beliefs in their wedding, and let us know if you see if differently.

Celibate Christian, Catholic Historian, and Leader in an Opus Dei Residence in Amsterdam, Paul Graas jumps back on to talk about all the Catholic controversies that Scott and his Protestant friends could think of. They went into the Pope, Purgatory, Praying to Saints, Praying to Mary, Political corruption in the Church's history, and sexual abuse by priests. Paul also takes time to share what he thinks non Christians are missing out by not believing in God, namely that they can't live life with a sense of humor. Find out more and listen!
Paul's Part One: Listen to Paul's first episode to find out how he heard from God to live a celibate life and how it was the most fulfilling choice he could have made. Paul has a unique ability to articulate Catholic doctrine in ways that Protestants can relate to. He is also a published author, a co-host on the Dutch podcast Goed, Beter, Best, and an expert on character formation and spirituality, especially on topics concerning the digital world, like social media, porn, screens, etc.

Celibate Christian, Catholic Historian, and Leader in an Opus Dei Residence in Amsterdam, Paul Graas join Scott on the podcast to discuss Catholicism and his journey of discovering his personal vocation to join Opus Dei and live a life of celibacy. He has a Spanish mom and a Dutch dad with six siblings. He grew up in a Calvinist primary school in the Bible Belt of the Netherlands, then Catholic high school in the southern tip of Spain, in a town where spaghetti westerns were filmed, then back to the Netherlands for his university days. He operates often in between the two Catholic and Protestant worlds. This gives Paul a unique ability to articulate Catholic doctrine in ways that Protestants can relate to. He is also a published author, a co-host on the Dutch podcast Goed, Beter, Best, and an expert on character formation and spirituality, especially on topics concerning the digital world, like social media, porn, screens, etc.
Paul's Personal Vocation: Paul got a personal call from when he was 16 to truly give his life to God. He calls it his personal vocation to join the Catholic order called Opus Dei. But what it involved was living a life of celibacy. He confronts the feeling that celibacy is a curse Christians put on other people whose sexuality is not condoned in the Bible. His story shows that celibacy is a gift God can give to some and that the brothers he lives with in Opus Dei bring him fulfillment.
In Paul's Part Two Paul has some hard-hitting things to say for Protestants and for non-Christians. You will come away from these episodes feeling challenged and curious about just how wrong your Catholic stereotypes were.

"Santa is in a deep depression. The pandemic has thrown a huge wrench in his supply chain, his elves are on strike, and he isn't sure he wants to do Christmas anymore. Then came Peter, a small boy who still believed in Santa and what Christmas was all about..."
This is an audio production of "Bringing Back Santa: A Christmas Comeback Story" written and produced by Scott Trout.
My family and I used to make these Christmas recordings when we were little. My mom would pick a Christmas story for us to read and then assign us different parts in the story, whether it was playing the piano, repeating lines after she said them, or just wishing people Merry Christmas at the end. For us as a family, this tradition helped us remember that Christmas is not just about us getting presents, but it's about Jesus's birth and giving to others like he gave to us. My parents would send these recordings on cassette tapes to friends and family all over the US every year. As we got older, we stopped doing the recordings, so I thought it was about time we brought it back.
For this year's edition:
I hope this story reminds you of the meaning behind Christmas and how this can be a time to serve others not just receive presents.

Muslim, Tik Tok Explosion, and World Traveler Ali Al Mulla is back to interview Scott. Scott shares about his faith from childhood, to the dip he went through in college and what pulled him out. Scott's story is often about the mentors who have shown him the way by modeling what a relationship with God could look like. Ali reflects on how he doesn't see people who are crazy in love with God and positive all the time in Islam as he did in Scott's Navigator ministry at Oregon State. He got a full glimpse of their community and their beliefs during a spring break trip to work at a camp in California.

Is it possible to be a devout believer without being overly religious?
How Ali would like to incorporate aspects of Christianity into his faith.
And Scott's reflection on what he likes about being a dad. Including the amazing moments of Naomi's little life. Being a dad is fun and incredibly responsible. Scott took some time after putting Naomi down to sleep to reflect back on his conversations with Saudamini. Her episodes left him with some questions for Hindu Millennials (people who are in their late 20's and early 30's who consider themselves Hindu).
What practices in Hinduism do you actually believe in? What does it mean to be Hindu if there are so many different gods in India based on which part of the country you live in? If I were to convert to Hinduism, what would I need to believe?
Is there anyone Scott's age, who is actually practicing Hinduism, or is it just a bunch of yoga spiritual white people who know all the Sanskrit names for yoga positions?

An Indian Woman's Perspective on Feminism and Religion. Saudamini Tambay is back to discuss her beliefs on feminism and marriage. They unpack what it is like to date someone of another religious background and the pressure to marry from traditional societies. **Check out our poll below!**
Other Topics:
Saudamini gives Scott advice on how to raise a girl, including an un-scary definition of feminism: simply treating men and women equally. Which is not what she experienced growing up in India outside her own family.
Scott tries to convince Saudamini why the wedding is actually important, by describing the inauguration of Joe Biden and the rides at Disney Land that you can't get off of without significant harm. His point is you need that public proclamation to herald a new relationship and those rides are actually more fulfilling because they are not easy to exit.

Can You Trust Your Magnets? Saudamini Tambay is back to talk about how religion can often impact our closest relationships. She opens up about her mom's history with Muslims growing up in Northern India and the bad blood that can create life-long notions of the "other." She is not alone in this, and Saudamini and Scott unpack how best to bring humanity back to those stereotypes.
Other Topics Discussed:
-Saudamini's thought on the pressure Christians put on God, as opposed to taking responsibility for your own moral choices, and how Saudamini looks to her therapist, friends, and yoga for sense of grounded-ness not a god.
-The magnet style of finding truth. Scott's thought on the danger of building your sense of self and truth from multiple sources (or magnets in this case) and how Christianity isn't just a narrative worth following. It's a relationship. Akin to Scott's relationship with his wife.
