UK Composites Industry Breaks £14 Billion Barrier – Why It Matters More Than Ever

Composites UK - Trade Association unveils growth figures and a bold five-year strategy to secure the UK’s place in advanced manufacturing and clean energy.

At the Advanced Engineering Show 2025 in Birmingham, Composites Lounge had the privilege of speaking with David Bailey FRAeS Ph.D, CEO of Composites UK (CUK), about the state of the UK composites sector and the association’s forward-looking strategy.

For the first time, the UK composites industry has surpassed £14 billion in turnover, marking a 4.8% growth year-on-year. Employment figures are equally impressive, with over 52,000 high-value manufacturing jobs now supported by the sector. These numbers underscore the critical role composites play across aerospace, automotive, defense, energy, marine, and renewables—industries that are central to the UK’s economic resilience and global competitiveness.

The association’s five-year strategic plan, built on five pillars:

Warum Composites-Simulationen jetzt den Durchbruch erleben – und was sie so besonders macht

Simulationen für Faserverbundwerkstoffe galten lange als komplex, teuer und schwer zugänglich. Doch das ändert sich gerade rasant – dank Pionieren wie Dr. Andreas Freund, Geschäftsführer der Realize Engineering Dresden GmbH. Im Gespräch mit Ilkay Özkisaoglu, Co-Founder der Composites Lounge, am Rande des JEC Forum Central Europe 2025 in Krakau wird deutlich: Die Branche steht an einem Wendepunkt.

„Für mich begann alles 1999 mit dem Kunze’schen Versagenskriterium“, erzählt Freund. „Damals war die Herausforderung, die verschiedenen Versagensmoden von Composites überhaupt zu verstehen – und mathematisch zu beschreiben.“

Während Metalle mit etablierten Modellen wie Mises, Tresca oder Görssen arbeiten, benötigen Faserverbunde differenzierte Ansätze:

Normalspannungsversagen, Scherbruch, Sprödbruch – je nach Belastungsrichtung und Materialaufbau.

Dass die Simulation so lange brauchte, um Mainstream zu werden, liegt laut Freund nicht an der Rechenleistung, sondern am Materialverständnis: „Bei Composites entstehen die Eigenschaften während der Fertigung. Der Herstellungsprozess muss Teil der Simulation sein – Stichwort digitaler Zwilling.“

Die Vorteile von Composites zeigen sich besonders beim Versagensverhalten:

gezielte Bruchstellen, hohe Energieaufnahme, Reparierbarkeit. Freund nennt konkrete Beispiele: „Ein Mountainbike-Lenker von Beast Components hält bis zu 5 kN – das sind 500 kg Belastung. Und durch virtuelle Tests wie EFBE oder Syntheseverfahren können wir das Verhalten exakt vorhersagen.“

Auch die Nachhaltigkeit profitiert: „Simulation hilft, nur so viel Material einzusetzen, wie nötig. Und viele Sportgeräte aus Faserverbund lassen sich hervorragend reparieren – das macht sie ökologisch wertvoll.“

Ilkay Özkisaoglu bringt es auf den Punkt: „Composites erfüllen alle drei meiner Content-Pillars: Innovation, Technologie und Nachhaltigkeit. Simulation ist der Schlüssel, um diese Potenziale skalierbar zu machen.“

Carbon statt Stahl: Wie Dresden mit dem CUBE die Bauindustrie revolutioniert

Dresden, Einsteinstraße 12 – ein Ort, der Geschichte schreibt. Hier steht der CUBE, das weltweit erste Gebäude, das vollständig aus Carbonbeton errichtet wurde. Was futuristisch klingt, ist Realität geworden – dank des C3 - Carbon Concrete Composite e. V., einem Innovationsnetzwerk mit über 130 Mitgliedern aus Wissenschaft und Industrie, das sich der Mission verschrieben hat, Carbonbeton als Schlüsseltechnologie im Bauwesen zu etablieren.

Im Interview mit Dr.-Ing. Frank Schladitz, Sprecher des C³-Verbandes und Forschungsgruppenleiter am Institut für Massivbau der Technische Universität Dresden, wird deutlich: Carbonbeton ist mehr als ein Material – es ist ein Paradigmenwechsel.

Was macht Carbonbeton so besonders?

Nichtmetallische Bewehrung: Kein Rost, keine Korrosionsschutzmaßnahmen.
Materialeffizienz: Wandstärken von nur 4 cm statt 15 cm – bei gleicher Tragfähigkeit.

Leichtbau: Carbonfasern sind sechsmal tragfähiger als Stahl und wiegen nur ein Viertel.

Nachhaltigkeit: Reduktion des CO₂-Footprints durch weniger Zement und Stahl.
Designfreiheit: Filigrane Formen, gebogene Bauteile, textile Varianten – alles möglich.

Der CUBE demonstriert diese Vorteile eindrucksvoll: Von ultradünnen Wand- und Deckenkonstruktionen über Treppen mit 70 % weniger Materialeinsatz bis hin zu hochwirksamen Schallschutzwänden. Selbst Brückenbauprojekte wurden bereits erfolgreich mit Carbonbeton umgesetzt – darunter die Brücke entlang der S111 in Wurschen, die für Schwerlastverkehr zugelassen ist.

Wissenschaft trifft Praxis

Der CUBE ist das Ergebnishaus des C³-Projekts, gefördert durch das Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt im Rahmen von „Zwanzig20 – Partnerschaft für Innovation“.

Die Bauweise erfüllt alle baurechtlichen Anforderungen und zeigt, wie Carbonbeton die Zukunft des Bauens gestalten kann – ressourcenschonend, langlebig und ästhetisch.

Mirko Filler im Interview: Composites, Billigimporte und der Lichtblick humanoider Roboter

Beim JEC Forum Central Europe in Krakau sprach Ilkay Özkisaoglu mit Mirko Filler, Geschäftsführer der Black East GmbH in Dresden, über die aktuelle Lage der Composites-Branche in Deutschland. Das Gespräch beleuchtete nicht nur die regionale Landschaft in Dresden, sondern auch die Herausforderungen, die durch Billigimporte aus Asien entstehen – insbesondere bei Faserverbundwerkstoffen.

Filler betonte, dass die deutsche Industrie unter starkem Preisdruck steht, da asiatische Anbieter zunehmend mit günstigen Produkten auf den Markt drängen. Dies gefährde nicht nur die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit, sondern auch die Innovationskraft heimischer Unternehmen.

Doch es gab auch einen Lichtblick: humanoide Roboter. Im Interview zeigte Filler ein beeindruckendes Video von Boston Dynamics, in dem der humanoide Roboter Atlas autonome Aufgaben übernimmt – darunter das Greifen, Sortieren und Transportieren von Objekten in komplexen Umgebungen. Composites in der Robotik: Was steckt drin?

Die Konstruktion von Atlas basiert auf hochentwickelten Materialien, darunter Titan und aluminiumbasierte 3D-gedruckte Komponenten, die für ein optimales Verhältnis von Gewicht und Festigkeit sorgen. Diese Materialien sind klassische Vertreter der Composites-Welt und ermöglichen die außergewöhnliche Beweglichkeit und Belastbarkeit des Roboters.

Besonders hervorzuheben sind die neuen GR2-Gripper, die mit taktilem Sensorik, Kameras in der Handfläche und einer opponierbaren Daumenfunktion ausgestattet sind. Diese Komponenten erlauben präzises Greifen und Manipulieren – Fähigkeiten, die in der industriellen Fertigung, Logistik und sogar im Bauwesen zunehmend gefragt sind.

Deutschland und der Comparative Advantage

Filler sieht Deutschlands Stärke weiterhin im Engineering. Trotz globaler Konkurrenz besitzt Deutschland einen Comparative Advantage – also einen komparativen Vorteil – in der Entwicklung und Anwendung komplexer technischer Lösungen.

Was bedeutet „Comparative Advantage“ für Ingenieure?

Einfach erklärt: Ein Land oder Unternehmen hat einen komparativen Vorteil, wenn es ein Produkt oder eine Dienstleistung mit geringeren Opportunitätskosten herstellen kann als andere. Für Ingenieure heißt das: Wenn Deutschland z. B. hochpräzise Robotik oder Composites effizienter und besser entwickeln kann als andere Länder, sollte es sich darauf spezialisieren und diese Stärken ausbauen.

🏛️ Historie: Dresden & das RGW*-Erbe
Dresden ist nicht nur schön – es ist historisch bedeutend für den Leichtbau. Die Wurzeln reichen zurück bis 1955, als die VEB Flugzeugwerke Dresden unter Leitung von Brunolf Baade das erste deutsche Passagierstrahlflugzeug „152“ entwickelten. Die dafür errichteten Versuchshallen sind heute Teil des IMA-Werksgeländes.

Nach dem Ende des zivilen Flugzeugbaus entstand 1961 das Institut für Leichtbau und ökonomische Verwendung von Werkstoffen (IfL) – die Wiege des modernen Leichtbaus. Mit über 700 Mitarbeitenden wurden hier Werkstoffe erforscht, Leichtbautechnologien entwickelt und Standards wie die TGL-Normen geschaffen.

🧪 Prüfungen an Composites & Rotorblättern
Jens erklärt die Testpyramide – ein strukturiertes Prüfkonzept:

Ein Highlight: Die zyklische Prüfung mit einem Unwuchterreger, der das Rotorblatt in Schwingung versetzt und so Jahre an Belastung in kurzer Zeit simuliert. Diese Methode ist essenziell für die Zertifizierung nach IEC 61400-23[3].

Wissenschaft trifft Wirtschaft – grenzüberschreitend und zukunftsorientiert

Im Rahmen der KOMPOZYT-EXPO® 2024 in Krakau führte Ilkay Özkisaoglu, Co-Founder der Composites Lounge, ein aufschlussreiches Gespräch mit Andrzej Czulak, dem Vorsitzenden des Polish Cluster of Composite Technologies / Polski Klaster Technologii Kompozytowych (PKTK), sowie mit Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Lothar Kroll, Direktor des Instituts für Strukturleichtbau (IST) an der Technische Universität Chemnitz.

Der PKTK, ein nationaler Schlüsselcluster mit über 120 Mitgliedern, vereint Unternehmen, Forschungseinrichtungen und Hochschulen aus Polen und darüber hinaus. Ziel ist die Stärkung der Verbundtechnologien durch internationale Kooperationen – insbesondere mit Deutschland und Frankreich.

Der Cluster engagiert sich aktiv in sicherheitsrelevanten Bereichen wie Drohnentechnologie und resilienten Lieferketten, was angesichts der geopolitischen Lage in Osteuropa von besonderer Bedeutung ist.

Das Institut für Strukturleichtbau der TU Chemnitz wiederum steht für exzellente Forschung entlang der gesamten Wertschöpfungskette – von der Faser bis zum komplexen Bauteil.

Mit über 350 Mitarbeitenden und dem Exzellenzcluster MERGE verbindet das IST Grundlagenforschung mit industrieller Anwendung.

Die enge Zusammenarbeit mit Fraunhofer IWU, CETEX und dem STFI zeigt, wie textile Technologien und Leichtbau Hand in Hand gehen – auch über Landesgrenzen hinweg.

Diese Synergien werden kommende Woche beim JEC Forum Central Europe in Krakau sichtbar.

Erstmals veranstaltet die JEC Group in Partnerschaft mit Targi w Krakowie dieses Forum, das zentraleuropäische Länder wie Polen, Tschechien, die Slowakei und Ungarn zusammenbringt.

Effizienz ist kein Selbstzweck – sondern Voraussetzung für Wettbewerbsfähigkeit.

Contrary to intuition, landing on water is anything but easy, he explains. In fact, rather than hitting the brakes, you need to fully engage the throttle upon touchdown. Can you guess why?

We also delved into the romance of the boats that glide across these waters. The verdict? It’s either black or white. No middle ground.

What do hydroplanes and startups have in common? A lot more than you might think.

I had the privilege of interviewing Sergio Gori, owner of FKgroup, in the stunning gardens of Villa Erba at Lake Como—a setting as inspiring as the conversation itself.

Sergio is not only a leader in the composites industry, but also the sponsor of the recent JEC Forum Italy and most importantly a passionate pilot with licenses ranging from gliders to hydroplanes.

And it turns out, flying a hydroplane is a perfect metaphor for entrepreneurship.

💡 Here are some of the lessons he shared:

🔹 Hydroplanes are unpredictable.
When you touch down, you're not a plane, not a boat, not a car. You need power, precision, and a bit of luck. Just like in business, especially in startups—conditions change fast, and you need to adapt on the fly.

🔹 You must focus on the horizon.
Looking at the water can disorient you. In business, focusing too much on short-term turbulence can make you lose sight of your long-term vision. Keep your eyes on the horizon.

🔹 Failure is not the opposite of success.
Sergio says: “There are two kinds of hydroplane pilots—those who have crashed, and those who will.” In entrepreneurship, mistakes are not just inevitable—they're essential. The real opposite of success? Doing nothing.

🔹 Use your brain—200%.
Composites is a complex, innovative field. It demands creativity, resilience, and constant learning. Sergio believes this is what makes the industry so rewarding—and why FK Group thrives in it.

At the stunning Villa Erba during JEC Forum Italy, I had the opportunity to speak with RAPHAEL PLEYNET, Managing Director of The European Composites Industry Association; EuCIA about a game-changing initiative: the European Composites Circular Alliance (ECCA).

Launched at JEC World 2025 in collaboration with the European Commission, ECCA is a voluntary, industry-led movement to accelerate circularity in the composites sector.

It’s inspired by the success of the Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA)—but tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities of composites.

What makes ECCA different?

It’s proactive:

The composites industry isn’t waiting for regulation. It’s stepping up now.

It’s inclusive:

Open to all players—raw material suppliers, OEMs, recyclers, waste managers, and even individual experts.

It’s action-oriented:

Celebrating 20 Years of Assocompositi and the Launch of the European Composites Circular Alliance (ECCA)

At the recent JEC Forum Italy 2025, held in the stunning Villa Erba on Lake Como, Ilkay Özkisaoglu had the privilege of speaking with Prof. Roberto Frassine—President of both Assocompositi and The European Composites Industry Association; EuCIA —about two major milestones shaping the future of composites in Europe.

🎉 Assocompositi Turns 20

Founded in 2005, Assocompositi has grown from 20 founding members to over 80 today, becoming the authoritative voice of Italy’s composites industry. Over two decades, the association has championed innovation, sustainability, and international collaboration. It offers technical and regulatory support, market studies, green certifications, and training programs. Assocompositi has also played a pivotal role in promoting circular economy solutions and end-of-life strategies for composites [1].

🌍 Introducing the European Composites Circular Alliance (ECCA)
Launched by EuCIA in partnership with JEC, the ECCA is a bold new initiative to build circular and competitive value chains for composites across Europe. Inspired by the Circular Plastics Alliance, ECCA aims to:

-Promote design for recycling
-Improve waste collection and sorting
-Boost recycled content in new products
-Guide R&D and investment
-Establish a monitoring system for recycled volumes

Prof. Roberto Frassine emphasized the importance of aligning with the European Commission’s dual focus on sustainability and competitiveness. With DG GROW as a key partner, the Commission has joined ECCA as an observer, ensuring strategic alignment with EU policy goals.

🗣️ “We want to prove that composites are not only recyclable in theory—but recycled in practice,” said Frassine. “ECCA is open to all stakeholders. Just sign the declaration—no fees, just commitment.”
