John & Yoko Some Time In New York City
This past Fall, John Lennon & Yoko Ono's only son, Sean Ono Lennon, released the exhaustive Power To The People 12 disc expanded version of his parent's criminally ignored 1972 radical feminist, agitprop, street wise, cutting edge, urban soul, ghetto funk rock masterpiece Some Time In New York City, With the exception of ONE SONG The one song that has become the ELEPHNANT'S MEMORY BAND in the room. Join us as we explore Sean Ono Lennon's visionary Evolution Documentaries for 9 of the 10 songs from his parents often misunderstood first proper rock n roll album together. and... We let the pieces fall where they may in rescuing the often censored controversial track from obscurity by John & Yoko to complete the missing piece of the puzzle of Sean Ono Lennon's audio love letter to Mom & Dad. Which brings us to the somewhat gratuitous F-bombs dropped by John & Yoko while recording this Masterclass In Agitprop, necessitating the dreaded "E" for EXPLICIT rating. Listener Discretion Is Advised. And... Before you get offended, please remember, it's right there in the name of the podcast. WE LOVE YOU! "LOVE LOVE LOVE" - John Lennon "WAR IS OVER! John Lennon Stole A Xmas Song?
Headline caught your attention? Not to worry, this is not click bait Listen as well reveal how John Lennon's crafty song nicking skills got him in trouble, once again! But this time 'round it's not the LSD toting Dr. Timothy Leary he's pissed off. Or Chuck Berry.  But wait! The FUN doesn't stop there... Join us in this episode as we shed some light on circumstances surrounding America's racist conspiracy to wipe out Rock N Roll altogether in the 1950s. Elvis got taken out of the game, drafted into the Army. Chuck Berry got arrested. Eddie Cochrane dies in a suspicious car incident in England. Carl Perkins is put out of commission in another suspicious car incident on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Allan Freed, the man responsible for not only giving Rock N Roll its name but also spreading its gospel to the youth of America through the very first rock concerts ever and his nationally syndicated radio show, GETS BUSTED and dies penniless shortly thereafter. 17 year old Latino Tex/Mex heartthrob rock n roller Ritchie Valens. Dead. Airplane crash. 22 year old Buddy Holly, without whom, the world would never have had The Beatles. Dead. Airplane crash. 28 year old The Big Bopper, the veteran of the bunch, riding high in the charts, Top 10 in America with Chantilly Lace. Dead. Airplane crash. 22 year old Jerry Lee Lewis, scorned for singing the Devil's praise with Great Balls of Fire, CANCELLED in sex scandal. Sam Cooke. Singer, songwriter, record producer, arranger, music publisher, record label owner and soon to be casino owner. Shot dead under extremely suspicious circumstances involving two individuals with previous links to crime. Most suspicious of all? Flamboyant and openly gay, African American Little Richard, at the very height of his creative powers and earning potential, quits music altogether, turning his life over to God and the Ministry.   BUT WAIT!!!!!!! There's still MORE! ...and that's not the half of it. Warren Zevon: Enjoy Every Sandwich
Warren Zevon began life the son of "Stumpy" Zevon, a Jewish immigrant born William Zivotofsky in the Ukraine before changing it to Zevon. To feed his family Zevon worked as a bookie handling volume bets and dice games for notorious Los Angeles mobster Mickey Cohen. Zevon ended up working for years in Cohen's gang and was best man at Cohen's wedding. Stumpy's son Warren, once student to the legendary, world renowned classical composer Igor Stravinsky, turned professional musician, singer, songwriter while still in high school, forming a duo whose first single, produced by Bones Howe, reached number 65 on Billboards Pop Chart in April 1966. No bad for a first timer! Soon afterwards, Zevon's parents divorced. He quit high school and, driving a sports car his gangster father won in a card game, moved from Los Angeles to New York to become a folk singer. And so begins the 55 year odyssey from the release of his ironically titled 1970 debut album Wanted Dead Or Alive to his posthumous induction into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame on November 8, 2025.  Join us, along with David Letterman and the man himself, as we retrace the steps of his journey from Stumpy Zevon's kid to Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Inductee. It will be quite apparent after perusing the song titles for today's show that Listener Discretion Is Advised as there is some objectional language used and subject matter not suitable for all audiences. THE SONGS: Live acoustic version of Zevon's My Sh*ts Fuc*ed Up https://music.apple.com/ca/album/my-shits-f-d-up/828491542?i=828491636 from his 10th studio album Life'll Kill Ya released in 2000 Detox Mansion https://music.apple.com/ca/album/detox-mansion/1443603309?i=1443604761 from Zevon's 6th studio album Sentimental Hygiene released in 1987 Carmelita https://music.apple.com/ca/album/carmelita/764026483?i=764026510 from Zevon's 2nd album, self titled, released in 1976. Starring two of the finest actors of their generation, the two Jeremy's; Shameless star Jeremy Allen White as Springsteen, and noted method actor Jeremy Strong as Jon Landau, Springsteen's longtime manager, both actors ground this weighted cinematic portrayal of the birthing process behind one of the most misunderstood and talked about albums of the 1980s. Deconstructing Keaton
This week's episode of Rock N Roll Fashionistas is an open letter of love to Diane Keaton who passed over into the ether of the unknown this past week... Comedic genius, actor extraordinaire, Academy Award Winner (Best Actress 1977 Annie Hall), Academy Award Nominee (Best Actress 1981 Reds, Best Actress 1996 Marvin's Room, Best Actress 2003 Something's Gotta Give) Writer, Director, Producer, Photographer, Singer, Activist, Huffington Post contributor, Realtor, Renovator, Mother. Beauty... Avidly opposed to cosmetic surgery, Keaton was quoted in 2004 as saying, "I'm stuck in this idea that I need to be authentic, My face needs to look the way I feel." Portions of this episode let Keaton's work speak for itself, as heard from films Annie Hall 1977 Manhattan 1979 Interiors 1978 Also in this episode we pay homage to our favorite Bronx born, New Yorker, Kiss member, lead guitarist, vocalist and songwriter extraordinaire Ace Frehley who followed through Keaton's footsteps into heaven this past week... All of this AND MORE! in the latest episode of Rock N Roll Fashionistas where we find ourselves, just like old times, back in a New York groove and made for loving you! OPENING TRACK: Annie Ross's original recording of her 1952 vocalese composition Twisted based on an original composition of the same name written and recorded in 1949 by American bebop tenor saxophonist Wardell Gray. https://music.apple.com/ca/album/twisted-remastered/889725994?i=889726241 Woody Allen opened his 1997 film Deconstructing Harry with this exact same Annie Ross original recording of the song. Over the years, both as a member of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross and also as a solo artist, Annie Ross would go on to record countless versions of this song but none ever matched the urgency, depth and power of her original recording heard here as well as Allen's film. CLOSING TRACK: American bebop tenor saxophonist Wardell Gray and his original 1949 New Jazz Record Company recording of his composition Twisted https://music.apple.com/ca/album/twisted-11-11-49/305738553?i=305739465 accompanied by Al Haig piano, Tommy Potter bass and Roy Haynes drums, reinterpreted three years later in a vocalese variation by singer Annie Ross in 1952 and once again 22 years later by Joni Mitchell on her 1974 album Court And Spark.   BTW...   ...do you have a burning desire to send us an email? Happy Thanksgiving
To all of our listeners we would like to wish each and every one of you a healthy, happy, safe and joyful Thanksgiving, regardless of whether you celebrate the harvest feast of gratitude in October or November. We here at Rock N Roll Fashionistas have much to be grateful for... First and foremost we are GRATEFUL for YOU! Yes, YOU! Thank you for listening. Without you there would be no point in doing this at all. We would also like to thank Ray Davies, whose powerful music we have used in this show to help punctuate the season. As far as we can tell, Ray has not licensed either album we have taken our OPENING and CLOSING songs from for distribution. At present there is no way to stream or purchase either one of his albums Other People's Lives (2006) or Working Man's Café (2007).  We tried unsuccessfully to identify an official website for Ray in order to contact his organization directly to inquire as to how it is possible to purchase either one of these albums at this time. OPENING TRACK: Morphine Song taken from Ray Davies' 2007 album Working Man's Cafe, originally released on Sir Richard Branson's record label V2 Records CLOSING TRACK: Thanksgiving Day taken from Ray Davies' 2006 album Other People's Lives originally released on Sir Richard Branson's record label V2 Records At present, the Ray Davies albums that are currently available to stream and/or purchase were both originally released by Legacy Records (a division of Sony Music). At present their ownership is credited to Ray Davies (Entertainments) Limited   Do you have a burning desire to send us an email? Please do! info@rocknrollfashionistas.com   Want on our mailing list?
