4:20 pm Monday, January 5 is celebrated as the 360th birth anniversary of the Tenth Guru of the Sikh faith, Guru Gobind Singh. He was a warrior, poet, and philosopher. In 1675, at the age of nine, he was formally made the leader of the Sikhs after his father Guru Tegh Bahadur—the ninth Sikh Guru—was executed by the emperor Aurangzeb. We asked Bhupinder “Bo” Singh, an avid history buff of Sikhism, to describe the fateful events in Guru Gobind Singh’s life and the everlasting effect on the community.

4:50 pm If you’re a long-time Houstonian, you probably remember the city’s first hour-long South Asian television show – Asiana Television – locally produced by us, Indo American News, from 1989 to 1992. We ushered in lots of local talent to the marketplace, including Sunil Thakkar of this radio station, Masala Radio. It was a brave work of passion for news, operated on a shoe-string budget, and headed up by Dr. K.L. Sindwani as the producer, Pramod Kulkarni as the Executive Producer and Anjanika Desai as the Directorwithout whom it wouldn’t have been possible. It just so happens that we have Anjanika with us in the studio today, after all these years, and she’ll share her remembrances of that Golden Era in local Desi news.

4:20 pm The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was founded on September 27, 1925, and is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The organization is marking its centenary with a year-long schedule of celebrations, which began in late 2024 and will extend to Vijayadashami in 2026. To mark the occasion, the local supporters ofthe RSS will periodically present relevant stories. Today, we are joined by one outstanding sevak, Jai Bansal, who will describe the events that led upto the creation of the Ram Janambhoomi temple.
4:50 pm Guru Tegh Bahadur's shaheedi (martyrdom) occurred on November 24, 1675, in Delhi, where he was beheaded on the orders of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb for defending the religious freedom of Kashmiri Hindus. He isrevered as the ninth Sikh Guru and is known for his sacrifice against forced conversions, which earned him the title "Hind Ki Chadar" (Shield of India). We asked Bhupinder “Bo” Singh, an avid history buff of Sikhism to describe the events and the effect on the community.
5:20 pm Mata di Chowki is a devotional event in Hinduism that honors Goddess Durga, also known as the Divine Mother. The name translates to "platform of the Mother," referring to the gathering where devotees sing bhajans (devotional songs), recite prayers, and perform rituals to invoke her blessings for inner peace, prosperity, and protection. Mohini Vashist of the Hindu Worship Society will explain the significance of this devotional event.

4:50 pm Four term State Rep. Dist 129, Republican Dennis Paul is running for the Senate District 11 seat held by Republican Mayes Middleton. His long-term good friend Sam Kannappan will call in to discuss Paul’s goals. Sam will also talk about his own extensive achievements as an engineer and a volunteer and an active member of the Indian community and the Kannappan Museum in Pearland.

5:40 pm Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar led the National Democratic Alliance (led by the BJP) to a huge win in the State Assembly election on Friday winning 200 seats out of 243 in the legislature. His Mahila Rozgar Yojna, under which $112 was given to around 1.25 crore women over the last twomonths, have played an important role in his landslide victory. We asked Bihari Ravi Ranjan, now a Telfair resident, to describe how this happened.

4:20 pm The greater Houston area is a sprawling 10,000 sq miles while the city itself is closer to 700 sq miles. Nestled in this vast space are neighborhoods and clusters of businessdistricts that have spawned their own traffic patterns, commercial corridors and living arrangements, all of which are subjects that Dr. Caroline Cheong, an urban planning researcher at the Kinder Institute at Rice University, has studied from the perspective of conservation, development, regeneration and affordable housing. Caroline joins us today to talk about what her research has found that could help the average Houstonian.
4:50 pm Just like many others large cities across the US, Houston has its share of homeless people and you can see them panhandling at many high-density street corners. But unlike others cities, Houston has been lauded for decreasing homeless numbers by 60% by placing them in affordable and in most cases free shelters. Just this past week, the City of Houston approved spending $16 million to buy the property at 419 Emancipation Avenue, which will house up to 320 people. We asked Catherine Villarreal, a Vice President at the Coalition for the Homeless of Harris County to explain how the homelessness issue is being tackled here.

4:20 pm Surendran Pattel is a very persistent and determined man who in 2022, won in his second electionrace for Judge for the 240th Judicial District Court. In that position, he has worked hard to cut down the enormous backload of cases and earned the respect of his peers, attorneys and elected officials for his efficiency and even-handed approach. Surendran is now running for re-election and will be on the March 2026 Primaries. Still as busy as ever, between family and work, he managed to find some time to call us today to talk about his work as a judge and what hehopes to do with a second term.

BorderCzar Tom Homan sounds absolutely gleeful when he describes how ICE is rounding up illegals while DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s TV ads to expel them are grim andthreatening. 4:50 pm The Gujarati Samaj of Houston Centre on West Bellfort and Beltway West officially opened up on September 22, 2019 when Indian Prime Minister Modi inaugurated it during his “Howdy Modi” visit. Will AI usher in a new era of prosperity or will it be misused to push society into a heavily surveillanced and subservient state?
