Fire and Ice: The Joy Goddess of Harlem
A’Lelia Walker, an heiress to one of the first Black millionaires, was known for being a prolific partier during the Harlem Renaissance, but there was much more than partying going on behind the very public scene that was A’Lelia’s life.  As the only surviving daughter of Madame C.J. Walker, there was a lot of pressure on young A’Lelia to keep the family business of hair care products alive. A lesser told story about A’Lelia is what happened when she tried to continue the legacy her mother started. As A’Lelia tried to follow in her mother's footsteps, she ended up deciding to make her own path instead.   A’Lelia’s great-granddaughter and namesake, A’Lelia Bundles, writes all about it in her book Joy Goddess A'Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance.  UATL is a source for Black culture and community in Atlanta. True to the Game: Atlanta Hawks Do It for the Culture
Over a decade ago, the Atlanta Hawks were at a crossroads. The organization was reeling from a scandal after a racially charged internal email from one of its owners was shared with the NBA league office. That was followed by the discovery of racially insensitive remarks from their former general manager. Since then, the organization has made a point to celebrate Black culture in Atlanta.  Leading the Hawks' charge is chief marketing officer Melissa Proctor. Proctor explains what the organization has done to rebuild trust, grow its fan base, get love from a past Pope, and strengthen ties to the community.   To learn more about Homecoming events near Atlanta: https://www.uatl.com/entertainment/2025/10/heres-your-guide-to-the-aucs-best-2025-homecoming-events/  UATL is a source for Black culture and community in Atlanta. Be Love: Reclaiming the Joy of Aging Black and Queer
Atlanta is seen as a queer Black mecca, a safe haven in the middle of the south. That doesn’t mean it’s perfect.  Angela Denise Davis and her partner Mary Anne Adams noticed that as aging black lesbians, there weren’t spaces in the city and beyond specifically for them.   So, they created ZAMI NOBLA, the National Organization of Black Lesbians on Aging.   The organization is dedicated to community building through music, spiritual connection, storytelling, and more to ensure no one feels forgotten.    To read more about ZAMI NOBLA and Atlanta pride, you can read DeAsia’s piece here: https://www.uatl.com/news/2025/10/the-black-queer-mecca-atlanta-residents-and-organizers-chime-in/    UATL is a source for Black culture and community in Atlanta.
