My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is MN Lee, author of the book Proof of Origin. MN Lee is a fiction author with a soft spot for oversteeped tea, tangled gardens, and stories that blur the line between the real and the uncanny. She writes across speculative and literary genres, weaving sharp prose, political unease, and moments of quiet magic into narratives that linger. She is hard at work on her next novel, The Ajumma Point, a feminist comedy about supernatural midlife transformation.   In my book review, I stated that Proof of Origin is a contemporary women's fiction that could be torn from today's headlines. This near-future story looks at politics gone awry, with the latest executive order calling for a lineage purity test. Anyone not 'American enough' is no longer welcome in the US and sent to camps that are far too reminiscent of the concentration camps of WWII.   We follow three characters - Jenny, born in the US to Vietnamese immigrant parents, Huy, Vietnamese but highly influential in the US government - until he's not, and Charlotte, a woman on the arm of an up and coming politician. What happens as their lives criss-cross and each has to confront difficult truths?   Lee's rendition of the rhetoric from the US government is very haunting - from the views on immigrants to their views on woman, birth control, family, books, and more. It is reminiscent of things one might hear on fringe-leaning social media posts, which makes her story even more chilling.   But we also see what happens to people who, once erased from their country, find a way to move forward and build again. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Lya Badgley, author of the book The Thirty-Fifth Page. Lya Badgley was born in Yangon, Myanmar, to Montana parents—a political scientist and an artist—who sparked her lifelong love of creativity and critical thought. After moving to the Pacific Northwest in the 1980s, she became part of Seattle’s arts and music scene. Miri is a researcher whose specialty is medieval manuscripts. She flies to Bosnia to study the Sarajevo Haggadah, an illustrated Jewish text of the Passover Seder housed at the National Museum. Unfortunately, Sarajevo is on the brink of war, so Miri has to work quickly.   As she works, she believes the Haggadah has strange powers. Before she can figure it out, war breaks out, and the Haggadah is lost. But when it finally returns to its place of honor at the museum, it has a new page. And she is called back to find out why. This thirty-fifth page merges history and folklore, putting Miri and those she cares deeply about into the middle of an ancient curse.   I loved going on this adventure with Miri as she tries to figure out who she is and what she wants in the world. For those who want to know more, Daniel has written a memoir, COR Values.   As a Christian, it is sometimes difficult to read works that dismiss God as a creator and loving father. However, I enjoy diving deep into things unknown, and Daniel does that in this book. He examines such things as self-awareness, living authentically, family dynamics, emotional resilience, and personal growth.   I think that reading a book with a different mindset can be exactly what the doctor ordered. Though I disagree with some of his conclusions, the book caused me to think about who I am, what I believe, and why. Despite our differences, I agree with many of his ideas, especially the one stating that people tend to do what is easy and comfortable rather than what is right. Her story outlines life with a schizophrenic mother and an alcoholic father from childhood and through the later years of her parents' lives. Because of her open nature, Liz gives readers a glimpse into a world of dysfunction and what it is like to live with those who suffer from mental illness and addiction.   What I loved most was that her stories, though often covering difficult topics, were funny, touching, and very real. Even with all that was going on, there was love, tenderness, happy times, and family togetherness. What could have been an indictment against her parents reads more like a story about family, what it means, and how to care for it even in the face of terrible odds.   I walked away understanding how difficult it can be to get someone the help they need, and how taboo mental illness and addiction still are in our society. However, the case they take on begins to unravel their trust and could cost them their lives.   Despite doing his job well, Nick's life is a mess. He drinks too much, he's a womanizer, and he has ghosts from his past that keep him from moving forward. And that is what makes him so endearing. His flaws make him real and keep the reading hoping for a good outcome. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Maureen Sherbondy, author of the book The Body Remembers. Maureen Sherbondy’s poems have appeared in Southern Humanities Review, Feminist Studies, Calyx, and other journals. The Body Remembers will be published in October by Unsolicited Press. Maureen has won both fiction and poetry prizes. She holds an MFA from Queens University of Charlotte. In addition to 11 poetry books, Maureen has also published a short story collection and a novel.   In my book review, I stated The Body Remembers is a book of poetry that looks at the life of women through the eyes of their bodies. I enjoyed several of these poems and saw my own life in the words.   I do want to say that I am not typically a reader of poetry and do not feel that I am qualified to review and rate a book of poetry. I know nothing of poetry elements like structure, sound devices, or poetic techniques. I don't know if the imagery met some level of standard or if the meter was right.   However, I do know that I felt the body's response to having a caesarean section, and later to having a hysterectomy. I felt fear, longing, hope, despair, love - all the emotions that live inside my own body and throughout my own life. I felt that Maureen understood me in ways that often go unnoticed. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Tim O'Hearn, author of the book Framed. Tim O’Hearn is a software engineer who works in quantitative finance. He is also an entrepreneur and freelance writer.   As a sports journalist, he covered the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. As a prolific creator of user-generated content, he has written hundreds of book reviews and thousands of other entries such as restaurant reviews, product reviews, blog posts, and comments-section polemics.   Framed: A Villain's Perspective on Social Media is his first book.   In her book review, Carole O'Neill stated: I read this book with a notebook by my side. There was so much information I felt like I was taking a full semester course. Framed: A Villain’s Perspective on Social Media was my daily tutorial and Tim O’Hearn was my professor.   He grew up with the internet using first, Myspace, then all the way thru Tiktok. Especially if you want to retain all the opinions he has to offer. So read it once or read it several times. I enjoyed the storyline and would have given it more stars if it weren't for the multitude of gratuitous explicit scenes. If you don't mind spice or are willing to skip the scenes, you'll find the story has a lot of depth.   We learn early on that the human race is being held together by a treaty that keeps demons, angels, and the seven deadly sins in check. The enforcers of the treaty are the four horsemen. However, the horsemen have to choose human hosts during an event called the crucible.   Both Shade and Theo, teenagers in love, are chosen to participate in the crucible - and Theo is chosen as a horseman, tearing the young lovers brutally apart. Several years go by, but Shade can't move on with her life. Then, strange things begin to happen - things that suggest the treaty is no longer in effect.   What will this mean for Shade? For Theo? For the world? This book is fast-paced and leaves you wanting the next installment.   Content note: There are some rather detailed sex scenes. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Scott Eveloff, author of the book Do Not Resuscitate. Scott Eveloff, MD is a physician living in Overland Park Kansas, having served the medical needs of far-flung towns in rural Missouri for greater than thirty years while actively publishing his perspectives on ethics in medicine. He has published extensively in the medical literature, having authored or co-authored 24 articles and book chapters. He has also authored and published a book detailing the first tumultuous years of his son’s life, Both Sides of The White Coat (People With Disabilities Press, 2000, 127 pages). Such extraordinary experiences as both a physician and parent of a medically complex child have been picked up and published by media as distant as England. His work has also earned him appearances on ABC’s 20/20 Medical Mysteries, ABC News Nightline, and on the Dr. Oz show. Dr Eveloff has remained a passionate advocate for the disabled. Many characters in his novels were inspired by his son’s life and attitude, and are tributes to the dignity that the disabled deserve but often do not receive.   Besides his passion for patient advocacy and compassion in today’s intimidating medical world, Dr. Eveloff’s interests include World War II, the Jewish experience in the Holocaust, and the supernatural. But everything turns sideways when he begins hearing and seeing the dead.   In addition to dealing with his own grief from the loss of his newborn child, his wife's grief, and the long hours of being an intern, Harry wonders if he is losing his mind. After meeting an elderly doctor, he realizes he has stumbled into something otherworldly - and it will be up to him to save innocent patients - and even those he loves.   Will he be able to get others to believe that the dead are stealing bodies by using modern resuscitation techniques? My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Michael Wendroff, author of the book What Goes Around. Michael Wendroff is the author of What Goes Around, a debut thriller published by Bloomsbury, which bestselling author Lisa Black calls a “brilliant debut,” and bestselling author J.D. Black says “Relentless and gritty, Wendroff expertly weaves a narrative that begs, ‘just one more page…’”   The book was inspired by what his mother said to him the second he was born: “Oh! How nice to see you–Again!”   Michael has an MBA in marketing from NYU, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. He is a global marketing consultant.   His mother was an editor (watching his mother scribbling in red ink on manuscript pages at home on weekends prepared him for his own editor's comments!). She remarried a literary agent, so Michael was friendly with many authors, and even spent a vacation with Robert Ludlum. Watching Ludlum hand-write his 450 page novels on yellow legal pads didn't dissuade Michael from trying to write a novel (though he's thankful for his PC).   What Goes Around was launched in the USA, UK, and Australia by Bloomsbury (in hardcover, eBook and Audiobook), and foreign language rights have been sold in Italian, Japanese, and Hungarian. It is now into its third hardcover printing, and the paperback edition comes out in October 2025.   Fun fact: Michael's great-grandfather was brought over by Thomas Edison from the University of Copenhagen to work with him. He holds a number of patents, including for plastic buttons. Michael proudly wears button- down shirts whenever he can.   In my book review, I stated What Goes Around is a thriller that will keep you turning the pages long after you say 'just one more chapter.'   We quickly meet the two main detectives, Jack Ludlum and Jill Jarred. Jack attacks his job with brute strength. Jill uses her brains. The two do not get along but are thrust together to find the serial killer.   Jack and Jill find themselves in the middle of a white supremacist murder spree with too many possible suspects and too many motives. Each time they think they've found their 'man,' the tables turn again. And just when the reader is sure they know the ending, Michael gives it a twist you will never see coming.   This book has it all - danger, romance, and characters you will love. Lewis as well as a bit of Harry Potter by J.K Rowling.   Early on, we meet the Dark Prince who realizes that the best way to get what he wants - an artifact from a girl named Lucy and her friend Schuyler - is to make them doubt who they are. He uses human emotions like anger, fear, and despondency. On the other hand, we meet the High King who uses love, meekness, and kindness. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Rebecca Hodge, author of the book Island Endgame. Rebecca Hodge writes suspenseful fiction with plenty of heart.  She's a retired veterinarian and clinical research scientist who lives and writes in North Carolina. Fiction writing is the space where her creative side comes out to play, and her writing centers on characters who discover that life is not a spectator sport. When not writing on the back porch or brewing yet another mug of tea, she loves hiking, travel, and (of course) curling up with a good book.   In my book review, I stated Island Endgame by Rebecca Hodge is a wonderful women's suspense novel that I simply could not put down. Rebecca writes deep characters within beautiful and dangerous settings, this time a remote island in The Puget Sound.   We meet Kenzie Adams, a nurse who is running from the guilt of failing her nephew when he drowned. No longer able to work at the hospital because she can't keep it together, she takes a few months off to work at an idyllic summer camp. Certainly, even someone as damaged as herself can handle band aids and bug bites.   However, from the moment she sets foot on the island, nothing is as it seems. Kenzie considers turning back on day one, but then what? She's sublet her place, no longer speaks to her family, and has taken a leave of absence from her job. So, she stays. But soon, everything goes sideways.   What should be a quiet retreat turns deadly as word of a substantial treasure reaches the ears of some fugitives. Now, she and the rest of the camp staff are in danger. And not just adults, but a child the same age as her nephew. Can she find the strength she needs to save herself and the others? Can she forgive herself enough to try? Or will she have to live with failing yet another child?   I've enjoyed all of Rebecca's books, but this one is my favorite by far! While we learn early on that New York lawyer, Henry Gladstone has been fooled by his ex-wife, Leslie, it isn’t very long before we discover he would give anything to renew their relationship.   Set mainly in Manhattan, the drama eventually details calls from a Russian mobster to frighten both Henry and his former wife with threats of kidnapping, blackmail and even death. Her lies continue to be questioned until Henry is beaten and found by a private investigator hired by his best friend.   Art Bell’s well-crafted story, What She’s Hiding, allows us to see how a man can continue to believe in a woman, even after being robbed of his savings, when love is blind. Leslie was very good at deception. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Ted Aukerman, author of the book A Farmboy, a Tom Boy, Jesus Freaks, and Divine Appointments. Ted was born in Ohio and moved to Oklahoma with his parents in 1978. He lives in Muskogee, OK, with his wife, Patti, his sweetheart of 38 years. They have three children and six grandchildren. With one on the way!   His first novel published in 2024, is actually four shorter works that were combined to make the Skips Sparks Anthology, A Farm Boy, a Tomboy, Jesus Freaks and Divine Appointments.   Ted is a singer-songwriter writing songs for Aukrocket Records. His albums are available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and Reverbnation to name a few. Movie fans will appreciate his contributions to the soundtrack of God, Where Are You? directed by De Miller from Lazarus Filmworks. Ted produces music and podcasts in his studio, Ted’s Auto Repair. His podcast Tales From The Road of Life is available on many platforms. Also, on Reverbnation is music from Skip Sparks, one of his characters and Ted’s alter ego.   In my book review, I stated A Farmboy, A Tomboy, Jesus Freaks, and Divine Appointments is a Christian historical fiction filled with music, laughter, hard times, and saving grace. I thoroughly enjoyed Ted's characters, all of whom had problems, issues, disappointments, and poor decisions - and yet, they also had kindness, love, determination, and a need for something more than the world seemed ready to offer.   This is a meandering story where you get to meet the characters, remeet them at earlier and later points in their lives, and finally see how they all come together, each touching the other.
