KAMALA AVILA-SALMON; Black is Not a Genre

 Kamala Avila-Salmon

Founder of KAS KAS Productions

“Black is Not a Genre”

Our first meeting on Zoom took place the day the fires broke in PP; in fact, I received an alert on my phone about the Pacific Palisades Fire and asked Kamala, who was on the Westside, if she heard anything, smelled anything …and as I wrapped our first conversation, the fire had spread and the winds in my neighborhood were increasing.

I remember recording an Instagram about how elated I was about this talk, and noticing the crazy winds off my deck, at that time 40 mph. History was made that day, with the start of one of the worst California fires ever, and they were spreading…

A month later, on MLK Day, we recorded this conversation. Significant in so many ways.

Highlights:

  1. The Concept of 'White as Neutral' in Storytelling
  2. The Importance of Diverse Narratives
  3. Intersectionality and Identity
  4. The Misrepresentation of DEI
  5. The Role of Youth in Storytelling
  6. The Future of Storytelling and Inclusivity
  7. Navigating Race and Identity in Conversations
  8. Advice for Aspiring Creatives

Two Important humorous notes:

  1. Koalas are not from Jamaica, they are from Australia, but  KAMALA is from Jamaica.
  2. Also, she lived in Queens (a borough in New York ) but she is also a “QUEEN” who is from the country of Jamaica, not Jamaica, Queens.

  • “But it also really jives with the way that I think about problems and think about situations…  from a very sort of 360 lens.”

  • “Colorblind Ideology….what’s wrong with saying black?”

  • “You know… for me, storytelling is the most effective canvas that we have for social change. That is the thing that brought me to the industry.

  • “And those of us that work in entertainment and in content have the privilege and the responsibility of shaping culture.”

  • “Black is not a genre. I still don't know anything about the movie. If you tell me it's a black movie.”

Black: Represents the Resilient people whose existence as a nation is honored and affirmed by the existence of a flag. Red: Symbolizes the blood of innocent Black lives that have been shed throughout history. Yellow: Stands for optimism, justice and equality for everyone. Green: Symbolizes Africa's rich greenery and other natural resources.

This year's Black History Month theme is "African Americans and Labor." According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), this theme "focuses on the various and profound ways that work and working of all kinds–free and unfree, skilled and unskilled, vocational and voluntary–intersect with the collective experiences of Black people."

  • A "Creative Lead" and a Writer and actually, a Multi-hyphenate.
  • Liza Wyles, “toggled staff and freelance” roles and has been an executive at major companies and worked with some of the Biggest brands, including DISNEY’s MARVEL. In fact, she's "Marvelized." As producer of original Marvel series for Disney + and a "bespoke comic book."
  • With accents of grey in her hair, and glasses, she is a self affirmed NERD and that has served her just fine, thank you.
  • Liza has a speaking voice that is easy to hear. She speaks with authority and warmth at the same time. She is direct. Honest, and even potent. Listen and learn and enjoy this interview with a woman who knows how to pivot.
  • We’re in a “Hollywood Contraction” according to the trades and industry pundits. What does that mean for the creative industry? While hundreds of industry employees are experiencing drastic lay-offs, we had this conversation and tried to be optimistic while also being real.
  • Liza has a point of view as one who has diplomatically straddled the roles of studio executive and for-hire consultant.

Half a Century in the Biz- Literary AGENT

RICHARD CURTIS has had half a century in the world of Literary Representation and digital Publishing. Listen to this self described “old timer” share his journey and how he worked with authors of all genres, with special success in science fiction. “A million dollar company,” his agency, in NYC, was recently sold.

“I was a literary guy” and “not a tech guy” but he was pivotal in the beginning of the e-book industry. Richard shares the many skills and required communication styles that he has employed to work with authors and manage long careers. Authors love writing so much “they would do it for nothing” so as an agent he learned how to “add value” and “fool publishers” into paying top dollar for these books and build the careers of his clients. He also underscores how as a literary rep, you always reflect and wonder “what could you have done better?” Though this host is not a fan, Richard shares the massive success of the GOR (Gorean Saga) books he represented and sold. Now considered dated by “feminists” in the “80’s” Richard says there are still people who role play out the characters in this series of books by John Norman. Beyond the world of books, Richard and his wife enjoy watching and supporting the world of ballet. He has befriended a few top New York City Ballet dancers.

ROCK the F--king BOAT Eitan Chitayat
🇮🇱 You may not agree with everything that Eitan Chitayat says- but you have to respect him for speaking out against anti-semitism worldwide, and speaking out against all kinds of hate. He has done campaigns to support women, LGBTQ issues and you may know him for his recent advocacy work and the hashtag, I'm that Jew. He speaks his truth through his art, his creative work as a brander, and as a writer. This is his link tree so you can dive into his work, his words: https://linktr.ee/eitanchitayat Natie, his Tel-Aviv based creative agency, has been remote even before many pivoted their "brick and mortar" businesses to remote shops. He has only senior staffers, around the globe, who share his values and vision. His clients have included some of the big corporate companies as well as little start ups with good intentions. His work as advocate has been seen by millions and inspired some other celebrities- who have reached out to him- Tiffany Haddish for one, who famously said "I can't believe everything I read... I need to (go) find out for myself." She met with Eitan in Israel to ask questions. As a woman who identifies as black and Jewish, she wanted to find out what "the people who are actually experiencing...I wanted to see with my own eyes, hear with my own ears..." she wanted to find the truth for herself. His posts have gone viral, way before October 7th (2023) he spoke out about the stabbings in Israel by Hamas,  January 7, 2015, a deadly assault on the offices of satiric magazine Charlie Hebdo in France. He did a Tedx Talk:"I'm not a stereotype. I'm that Jew." Now he says "I'm exhausted...I'm angry..." and you can follow him on social media which he says he dislikes, but is necessary for now, to get the word out. To get the words out. Michelle Zeitlin, founder and President of More Zap Productions & Management LLC, like Eitan Chitayat, grew up and lived around the globe. In (Madison- the snow- and sunny California) US, Israel, Chile and she worked in many countries through her creative opportunities including in Russia, Austria, Australia, Japan. Eitan lived and worked in Hong Kong, London and New York. He grew up in and currently calls Tel Aviv his home. Michelle and Eitan talked about the Academy Awards and Jonathan Glazer's speech- which has caused an uproar in the Jewish "Hollywood" population- both pro and con- towards his comments- and his movie, "Zone of Interest." In a time of very layered and complicated issues in the Middle East, Eitan believes you must dig for the truth, and that's why he teaches his two young sons. Anthony is a warm, exuberant and kind "human" who looks to find like-minded creatives who enjoy long, loyal relationships where truth and honesty and critical development are key. 🔑 His clients are made up of stage and screen actors and writers and producers who want feedback and job leads that lead to a career. Anthony has really been there, done that- on Broadway in Miss Saigon-and many plays, musicals and dance productions as a performer. In his time as an entertainer, he had three different names. He has been Glenn, Evan and now Anthony. He is a Filipino-American and Hispanic and LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈 -identifiers all- and this might be why he is empathetic and sensitive and an advocate for his clients of all colors and ethnicities. Enjoy this conversation and for more on his roster of clients see IMDB. You can reach out via Instagram or email. He welcomes questions and comments and often mentors and educates for arts conservatories and schools. He has experience in print, commercials, theatrical and literary rep. anthony@shushuent.com www.shushuent.com IG: @anthonyleonestalentmanager

Cultural Fluency- Global Creative Johan Vakidis
JOHAN VAKIDIS has worked with computers since his teens and took his skills in programming and early software and web development into the worlds of advertising and experiential event entertainment. Johan's work as a digital creative has allowed him to create projects all over the globe- from Montreal to Shanghai. His work in China and Korea and Singapore taught him the specific ways and protocols of working in East Asia. The "rituals" that are a part of business in these markets formed his "cultural fluency." Johan shared that "being able to trust the people you work with-- in China there is a hierarchy in business." Moving back to Montreal after 20 years, gave Johan a chance to try new ways of working - experiential design and working with huge brands where he integrated multiple adapted skills. A CCO by his late 30's, Johan has built not only major brand projects, but culture and collaboration. He is raising his teen son who got to interview skateboard celeb, Tony Hawk, on a Nike job- and is now enjoying his "intentional pivot" with his current position at C2, a company with the Kyu Collective. The "languages" he speaks include Mandarin, French, Spanish, Italian, Greek and some Italian- besides the ad speak, and the fluency in navigating the spheres of digital entertainment - while "scaling up!" 🆙 For More (ZAP) on host Michelle Zeitlin please see MoreZap.com or Passion-Power.com - If you are interested in being interviewed and featured on this podcast, please send an email. Very Jerry Mitchell- Broadway Director-Choreographer

Very Jerry Mitchell...

Jerry Mitchell and Michelle Zeitlin shared their memories of working with the legendary Michael Bennett and Bob Avian, on SCANDAL, a Broadway workshop with an outstanding group of stars and triple threats. Jerry was assisting the show creator, Michael Bennett at the original auditions, where Michelle was amongst over two thousand dancer-singers auditioning for a few coveted ensemble roles for this ground-breaking musical, at 890 Studios.

Jerry was an assistant and skeleton crew dancer on that production, which led to so many other amazing productions including FOLLIES and CHESS. He also worked with Jerome Robbins on JEROME ROBBINS BROADWAY. And then...he became a choreographer in his own right.

Now wearing the title of Director-Choreographer, he is most proud of BROADWAY BARES, and he was honored this year with the 2023 Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for his work on a modern day burlesque show that has raised millions of dollars for Equity Fights Aids.

Tara Nicole Hughes, Ebb and Flow... Dancer/Choreographer
Tara Nicole Hughes has worked for 26 years with "Uber brilliant" director/choreographer, Rob Marshall on some of the biggest contemporary movie musicals including, Mary Poppins Returns, Chicago, Nine, and for two years she was a part of the entire pre-production, production and post-production process of Disney's live action, The Little Mermaid. With long sinewy legs and pure line, Tara was always a standout both on Broadway stages and film/TV sound stages. She has a reputation for a strong work ethic and elegance as a performer. The day of this interview, the movie, The Little Mermaid, based on the animated musical Disney film, opened to $10.3 million in ticket sales. Tara worked in London at Pinewood Studios and other UK sound stage interiors, and on location in Sardinia, Italy for all the actual real water coverage. She was instrumental in creating the movements for the actors on rigs, working also with Stunt Coordinator, Adam Curley to create the underwater illusions and she co- choreographed with Joey Pizzi -all the dance segments - some with the Alvin Ailey company dancers who were flown into England. "I hope Disney shares," says Tara about the creative pre-production and process- "it's amazing." The biggest production number is "Under the Sea" and like the earlier, "Fantasia" film -they were inspired to create movement for the fish 🐠 and dolphin-like🐬 dance moves. "I am a bridge between departments...dance and stunts and actors and costume..." Tara also shares about the research and development and then the work "shutdown" for seven months for Covid. Principal photography finished two years ago, so it was exciting for Tara to see the movie come together and she smiled internally. "It's a really epic film. Rob Marshall has made a masterpiece. The work of a choreographer can ebb and flow like the sea- there are tumultuous waves and flatter low tides and therefore Tara balances her career life with her meditational practice. In addition to her work with dance and choreography, Tara is involved with wellness and hosts retreats. She practices regularly to get to a "quiet, safe place" on the (yoga) mat. "I get so busy with my projects... so I want to get back to it. They are great tools 🧰.. to find a deeper peace and happiness." Mom of two daughters, she enjoyed splashing in the sea with her very own two mermaids, aged ten and sixteen.

The Shark of Book Publishing: Lisa Sharkey

SVP, Director of Creative Development, HarperCollins Publishers HarperCollins.com A guru of nonfiction book publishing, Lisa Sharkey, who agrees that she is indeed "a shark," has worked for over sixteen years at one of the largest publishing houses in North America, chasing stories that have to be told. In her earlier life she was a talented and successful producer of TV news shows with a journalist's veracity. Since taking the plunge into book publishing-- she considers herself a hybrid editor/publisher-- she has helped to create multiple best selling books, and many have also received critical acclaim. Her list is gold. Michelle Zeitlin, HOST of Passion to Power, also a talent and literary manager and the CEO of MORE ZAP Productions & Management, asked Lisa several questions about her journey and her role. Listen to this interview if you've ever wanted to write a book, if you have ever considered writing nonfiction, and if you've ever wondered about the acquisitional process. Also, if you're going to spend months typing and maybe years writing that book, says Sharkey, make sure you're also building your platform. People have to know you to find out about your book. Make yourself known on social media, and build your audience. Sharkey is also writing a children's book about an owl and there will be more on that soon.. She also recommended a few children's books to the kid division of her publishing company. Lisa finds stories and develops books on all contemporary subjects, from spiritual and political books, to lifestyle trends in diet, sex and finance. "I see this position as a tremendous opportunity to blend my two passions- books and entertainment." (HarperCollins press release) In addition to her very busy life in New York, Lisa teaches college classes and is a guest speaker. She practices yoga and loves to spend time with her kids. P.S. When Lisa Sharkey says "it's coming out today!" She is referring to a book by Amanda Kloots, and that was actually in early April, 2023.
