She has worked in research in multiple mediums and had some really inspirational takes on how to approach life and opportunities. I can't wait for you guys to have a listen!

In this episode, Tamara references the EECC which can be found here: EECC Network

Class of 2019: Dr Harry Claxton - Surgery Trainee CT2

Harry was an absolute delight to speak to. He spent his BSMS years doing Medic Revue, taking a break for one year to do a master's in public health. It was interesting to hear about how Harry's career aspirations have changed over time and after exposure to different specialties: currently with a view to be a pediatric surgeon. This goes to show how strong an influence a good mentor can have and how those opportunities steer us in new directions.

Class of 2019: Dr Ross Munro - F4

Listen in as Ross talks about why he chose to take and F3 and F4, hear about the perks of locuming and what his work-life balance looks like. He gives some excellent advice and this episode for me, highlighted the importance of making your career work for you, not the other way around. Please give it a listen and leave us a rating!

Here are some excellent resources which Ross recommended: https://www.medicsmoney.co.uk/ and https://medicfootprints.org/

Teaching Fellow - Dr Luke Tester

This episode is something a little bit different, Luke has a postgraduate qualification from BSMS, and has worked as a teaching fellow, supporting current BSMS students and is now on the first stages of his ACCS training. He is also a friend and I absolutely loved the opportunity to quiz him because as you'll soon find out, Luke is definitely someone who puts 100% effort into all his endeavours and is a natural born teacher.

Class of 2021: Dr Aishwarya Vasudevan - FY1

When I spoke to Aish she was coming to the end of her FY1 year and she is a force to be reckoned with! Spending her free time in medical school weightlifting and entering competitions, you can tell she's a tough cookie to crack. She imparted to me the importance of staying strong: by recognising the signs of burnout in yourself and knowing when to take time out. Aish is after a very different path in life as she wants to pursue a career in leadership and management, listen now to hear more about what's involved...

Class of 2017: Dr Manimaran Jayamurthy - Paediatric ST1

Speaking to Mani was such a delight! Mani had such a great philosophy about life and how to approach opportunities in terms of comparing the future and current pay-offs, I don't know about you, but I find it hard to live in the moment and it helped so much being hear about Mani's approaches to the opportunities he's had in his own life. We also had the very stereotypical paediatric chat about our favourite superheroes! I can't wait for you to hear it...

Class of 2020: Dr Daniel Sims - FY2

In this episode, I spoke to Dan, who I spoke to during his FY2 year. We talked about how it felt, becoming a doctor during the most difficult time in our history - the covid pandemic. Dan has such an amazing outlook on life and it was a pleasure to talk to him about his time in medical school, he talked very openly about the bad days and he had some great strategies of how he copes with them...

Past Medical History
Class of 2009: Dr Chris Wincup - Rheumatologist

Hi, I'm Evie, I'm a medical student talking to alumni to find out what happens after medical school... where did life take them, what the unexpected twists and turns were and what they love about their job now (or perhaps don't love!). Join us as our alumni reminisce about medical school before reflecting on their time and offer their pearls of wisdom to us.

In this episode, I spoke to Chris, a consultant rheumatologist working in London with a specialist interest in lupus/SLE. He is a member of the first cohort of BSMS and he tells us what it felt like being the first cohort of a brand new medical school and what it was that drew him down to Brighton. We talked about how his career has evolved to not only include clinical practice but also how he was able to get heavily involved in research during his training years too. I really loved hearing how a chance encounter with a rheumatology case in an orthopaedic elective changed his mind and shaped his whole career steering away from surgery, toward rheumatology...

Class of 2016: Dr Aoife Fordham - GP Trainee and Digital Fellow

Hi, I'm Evie, I'm a medical student talking to alumni to find out what happens after medical school... where did life take them, what the unexpected twists and turns were and what they love about their job now (or perhaps don't love!). Join us as our alumni reminisce about medical school before reflecting on their time and offer their pearls of wisdom to us.

In this episode, I spoke to Aoife who is working as a GP trainee and Digital Fellow, learn as I am awed by her coding skills and how she managed to find this interesting portfolio career. We take a look into how her ideas about a career in A&E were shaped by medical school and the foundation years and hear how her professional interests grew and changed...

Past Medical History
Class of 2010: Dr Zainab Hussain - GP

This week's episode I spoke to Zainab who is a salaried GP in Stoke-on-Trent who has kept herself busy in the past 6 years working part-time whilst having three kids! We reflect on her time as a medical student, how the course has changed and what she was like as a student, and it was really reassuring to hear from her how she was very much undecided on her career path until well into her F2 year, as I am very much in the undecided category! Zainab gives great advice about how to use your experiences with patients to consolidate your knowledge about the conditions they live with and how to make the most of your time in placements.

She talks to me about her foundation jobs and how they each shaped her - including the dreaded task of bleeping the Med Reg! Hear about how the GP life won her over and some of the trials of the job, especially since the pandemic...

Class of 2015: Dr Katie Dichard-Head - Psychiatrist

Katie is a CT3 trainee in Pyschiatry and I spoke to her whilst she was on maternity leave looking after her youngest (who features in this episode *cue awwwhhh's*). It was an absolute pleasure to talk to her about being the 'outspoken' student, her switch from arts to science and how her journey through medical school helped shaped her current career. Towards the end we talked a lot about burnout, how the stress of the job can affect us and how being able to take action on that can be such a powerful and brave thing to do. Honestly, it felt like such a relief to be able to talk to a doctor that was so open about talking about this and even though neither of us are leaving medicine, we both felt it is important to talk about that as an option and not to add to the stigma that surrounds leaving medicine.

Class of 2015: Dr Paul Young - Anaesthetist

Hello! Welcome to the pod and its very first episode. I really enjoyed making it so I hope you enjoy listening to it!

I spoke to Dr Paul Young who is at ST5 in Anaesthetics and graduated BSMS in 2015. I loved talking to him, he had some wonderful advice for students and was an absolute delight to have as my first guest. Listen in as he talks about how his work in outreach whilst a student helped him in his career, and I loved that the medical student stock phrase 'I have to go, I have teaching,' has stood the test of time...
