Following the Death of Dawit I, the Ethiopian throne passed to his sons and grandsons in a series of reigns that were short and uneventful except for the reign of his second son Yishaq I which was significant in the way his father's reign had been. However, it was the reign of Dawit I's youngest son, Zera Yacob, which would prove transformative for Ethiopia. This episode covers the reigns of Emperors Tewodros I, Yishaq I, Endreas, Tekle Mariam, Sarwe Iyesus, Amde Iyesus, and part one of the reign of Zera Yacob the Great.

After the death of Amde Tsion I, he was succeeded by his son Seife Ar'ed (also known as Newaye Christos), and then his grandsons Newaye Mariam and Dawit I in turn.  These late Medieval era Emperors presided over a key time in Ethiopian History where they continued to assert the power of the Imperial throne domestically, and began to reach out to friends a foes abroad more widely.  This is their story.

In 1270, the Ethiopian Empire experienced a monumental change as a young prince from a fallen dynasty rose up and seized the throne, restoring his ancient bloodline to the throne.  His name was Yekuno Amlak, and the Dynasty he restored would rule over Ethiopia until 1974. Yekuno Amlak displaced the Zagwe Dynasty, which had been most famous for its saintly monarchs and its devoutness, with the help of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo church.  This is the story of how this came about.
