85. SMART Initiative in Tennessee with Jeremy Kourvelas
That’s Healthful Episode #85: Combating the Opioid Crisis – Substance Misuse & Addiction Resource for Tennessee Initiative Jeremy Kourvelas, SMART Substance Use Coordinator

According to the CDC, a little over a million, people have died from a drug overdose since 1999. In 2020, approximately 75% of the overdose deaths were opioid involved. The opioids identified have been prescription opioids like fentanyl and that the majority of all overdoses both fatal and non-fatal involved multiple different drugs. The State of Tennessee is no stranger to opioid overdoses and deaths from opioid use. Join me for this episode with Jeremy Kourvelas, the program coordinator for the SMART (Substance Misuse and Addiction Resource for Tennessee) Initiative, part of the Institute for Public Service.

More about Jeremy: Though he grew up in Memphis, Jeremy Kourvelas has spent over a decade in East Tennessee. After graduating from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s in psychology, he spent more than four years in multiple emergency departments in Knox, Roane, Blount, and Claiborne counties as a medical scribe. He returned to UT for a master’s in public health and a certificate in health policy and became SMART’s first employee in 2022. He also works for the Prevention Alliance of Tennessee, which seeks to advance prevention efforts pertaining to substance, alcohol, and tobacco use disorders.

Join me for a conversation with Dr. Lacretia Carroll, Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center about the importance of health informatics. Dr. Carroll especially relates health informatics to her research on health disparities in the LGBTQ+ community.


More about Dr. Carroll:

Lacretia Carroll joined the faculty of the UTHSC College of Nursing in October 2019. Her research focuses on social determinants of health, health equity and disparities, and health outcomes in sexual and gender minority adolescent populations.


Dr. Carroll earned her Bachelor’s Degree in nursing in 2011 from the University of Alabama-Huntsville and her Master’s Degree in nursing from the University of Memphis in 2013. She has clinical experience in pediatric intensive care and endocrinology and research expertise as a clinical research coordinator in pediatric allergy, immunology, and endocrinology. She received her PhD in 2018 from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center for her dissertation titled “Health-Related Quality of Life of Female Children with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia: A Mixed Methods Study.” Prior to assuming her faculty role, Dr. Carroll completed postdoctoral training at UTHSC.


Dr. Carroll has received several small grants from organizations such as Sigma Theta Tau and the CARES Foundation. She is a member of Southern Nursing Research Society and Pediatric Endocrinology Nursing Society. Dr. Carroll has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed papers and regularly presents at scientific meetings.
