Learn about the Dutch concept of “Normal is the Norm”, and how the Dutch perceive this. Learn what this concept means in collaborating with the Dutch from a leading expert in Intercultural training and communication. In this episode, I interview Hilde Ellerbroek – de Graaff, Trainer Intercultural communication and author of the book Decoding the Dutch, a fun and informative guide for making your way within Dutch working environments and Dutch Society.

Key Take-Aways:

  • Treat the other like you would like to be treated yourself or should it be: Treat the other like this person would like to be treated?
  • If you are somewhere within the average, you are doing good.
  • Dutch managers don’t know how to handle competition within a team because they believe everyone is equal. There is no better or best in the group.

Key Quotes:

  • “When you work within a Dutch team, there is no competition. Everyone is equal.”
  • “I was a real good student but I always tried to stay in the shadows, tried not to stand in the light…..”
  • “Within a competitive society, there’s winning and losing, this is not the case in the Netherlands, except if the soccer team is playing.”

3 examples of how cultural differences influence the hiring and the job searching process

This Podcast is interesting to listen to for hiring managers, job seekers and all others who would like to know more about cultural differences and how they influence the hiring process. Cultural awareness is an often discussed topic in coaching sessions and within companies or organizations, I work with. We all know we have our own cultural glasses on in our daily life, but how to bridge these differences? I will provide 3 interesting examples about how cultural awareness influences the hiring process and job searching process at the same time inspiring you to think about the way your own perspective influences your actions.

Key Take-Away:

  • So recruiters and managers: Stop asking this question or the question: “Who is X outside of the workplace?” if you know the candidate is from a more restrained society compared to the Netherlands.

Key Quote

  • “Cultural awareness reflects in your actions. You can start today with changing your actions to change your actions.”

Cultural Differences at the Workplace

Today on the Career Connection Podcast we will learn more about Cultural Differences at the workplace. Not only will we share insights on the cultural difference when applying, the subject discussed in the previous episode of the Career Connection podcast, but today we will focus on the cultural differences you will run into at the workplace itself.

Learn more about:

  • The experienced Dutch Directness,
  • The way the Dutch handle feedback at the workplace and
  • The importance of asking for help

To have a lively conversation about this topic I invited a special guest to the show: Cécile Booms. Cecile is a driven professional specialised in finding creative ways to help individuals at work and private life. She helps companies in setting up programmes to support their international employees and the partners of the employees to touch the ground and build new roots in the Eindhoven area.

Cecile knows what it’s like to be an Expat in her own country, she was born in the Netherlands, grew up in China, attending international schools before graduating from uni in the UK. This lifelong intercultural experience and affinity with working in an international setting and fascination by the between-worlds dynamic made her set up her own Company Branching Out, wanting to help internationals who find themselves foundering in new countries.

Essential Learning points:

  • We don’t talk about it and we should address things more – at least this is the Dutch perspective. By omitting things, you show also respect towards the other person, without bringing things to the table.
  • Relationship versus task-based – invest in building the relationship or deliver a good product and good service.

Key Quotes:

  • “When I first made the move to the UK, I realised this was a lot more of culture shock between that part than between China because in China I felt there were going to be differences and in the UK I didn’t realise how many differences were there.”
  • “I don’t think someone should copy a culture there not from.”
  • “At your first work day, you get a tour, …….if you need anything, I’ll be over here and you can ask.”

Meet The Expert: Monique Rosier - The Marriage Counselor

Meet the Expert in the Career Connection Podcast: Monique Rosier - Marriage Counselor

Perhaps this might come as a surprise to you but regularly people ask me if I know a good marriage counsellor or relationship therapist. Time to invite one to the Career Connection podcast. Learn about the bridges we sometimes have to build to stay aligned and what you can do to clean up the trash left in your basement or attic (psychology speaking, of course then).

I believe all things in life interact with each other, so if you are happy in your relationship, this will also allow you to be happier and perform better in your working life. And vice versa of course. All the more reason to address this subject.

Key Quote:

  • "When we clean up our basements we get rid of things that became part of our false belief system, about things we started to believe in our childhood and still belief this is true and if I relate this to relationships, then they're fighting pattern is coming from their childhood."
  • "What is your dream for your relationship?"
  • "Finance, intimacy and sexuality are very difficult subjects within a relationship. They disappear up in the attic or basement and comes out in a way we don't want them to come out. We better learn how to address it."

3 Mistakes to Avoid While Job Searching in the Netherlands

But isn't Job searching a kinda straightforward process?

Lots of people think it is, but it isn't if you enter a job market you are not familiar with. When you don't know about the common practices of applying and just apply what you know you might just end up with no job and frustration about the rejections coming in. Or even worse, no replies at all. You might end up in the situation you will take on every and any opportunity offered, and you and I know, this is not what you want. For a job search to succeed quickly and with ease, you do want to come prepared.

This is why I want to walk you through 3 mistakes I want you to avoid when job searching in this first episode of the Career Connection Podcast. Mistakes I made myself and mistakes others made. This podcast will hand you the opportunity to do things differently from the start or change your way of handling things as of now.

Essential Learning points:

  • Why 80% of a successful job search is preparation and 20% is luck.
  • Why consistency is King in the Job Searching process
  • Why a networking strategy should be embedded within your job search strategy.

Important Links and Mentions:

Key Quotes:

  • "When I started my coaching business I was really stunned about the number of people not wanting to put in any real effort to conduct a successful job search. And a solid preparation is putting in real effort to make this work"
  • "But what I see is Loads of people applying to jobs, "they think they can do", without being able to tell me WHY they think they can do this job.....This means I start to get worried when people tell me they are ready to take on any job."
  • "I am not saying you should not send applications but since 75% to 80% of the jobs are landed by referral, incorporating a networking strategy into your job search is a must-do."
