Episode 17: Champagne Problems

Bonne année tout le monde! Happy New Year everyone! Raise a glass of your favorite bubbly beverage for the new year! Our second holiday episode is a recent Netflix Original Movie: Champagne Problems!

The film premiered this past December and stars Minka Kelly, Tom Wozniczka, Sean Amsing, Flula Borg, Astrid Whettnall, and Thibault de Montalembert. Sydney (Minka Kelly) travels to Paris during the holidays prior to acquire a champagne vineyard. When she arrives, she meets Henri (Tom Wozniczka) in a bookstore in Paris and finds out the next day that he is the son of the owner of the vineyard with whom she is meeting.

In this episode we talk about the history of Champagne, both the region and the wine, and its evolution over the centuries. The industry we know today is quite matriarchal, including the well-known Veuve Clicquot.

We mention a book about Veuve Clicquot: The Widow Clicquot from HarperCollins.  We talk about the festival held in the region each year - Habits de Lumière - that has scenes featured in the film.

If you’ve ever taken a Duolingo course, you may recognize the chimes! One of the things we enjoyed in this film was how much French is spoken! Caitie took French in college and spoke a little French in this episode!

In the movie, Sydney and her sister say to encourage themselves that they are a Kelly Clarkson song - so we decided to open the episode talking about what Kelly Clarkson song we would be! Comment below - what Kelly Clarkson song would you be or what’s your favorite Kelly Clarkson song?

We also have a couple references to our previous episode for The Holiday about Hans Gruber in Die Hard and whether Gaston from Beauty & the Beast was the villain. After the episode, leave a comment with your thoughts!

Champagne Problems is available for streaming on Netflix. Let us know what you think of the movie and this episode!

We also mention holiday markets and specifically the Christmas Village in Philadelphia that is held each year and was open at the time of this recording. Caitie mentioned there was a windmill at the market that was new to the market this year. As part of some follow-up research, we wanted to offer a clarification, and it’s technically called a Christmas Pyramid.

Episode 14: Under the Tuscan Sun

“Can you *69 Genovia?”

Ciao a tutti! Our next review of the miniseries The RomCom Roundtable Goes to Italy is here! We’ve got a special guest! Today, Kelly joins the pod! Caitie and Kelly have been long-time friends since high school and went to college and grad together!

In this episode, we talk about Under the Tuscan Sun. Kelly studied in Florence, and Under the Tuscan Sun is one of her favorite films. We had a great time chatting with Kelly about her time in Italy and the connection of the film to her time studying in Italy.

Set in Cortona, Under the Tuscan Sun is based on the memoir of Frances Mayes, who purchased a villa in Italy. The memoir includes her story about renovating the villa with her husband and living life in Tuscany, where she still lives today.

Diane Lane stars as Mayes, who in the film takes the leap to purchase Bramasole while on a tour of Tuscany following her divorce with the hope that purchasing the villa will change her life and that she will find what she is looking for: home, love, and family.

The film was written and directed by Audrey Wells. The film stars Sandra Oh, Lindsay Duncan, Raoul Bova, Vincent Riotta, Giulia Steigerwalt, Pawel Szajda, and Kate Walsh.

In this episode, we talk about the differences between the memoir and the film, the themes and symbolism throughout the film, building home and finding community, and LGBTQ representation in the film.

Under the Tuscan Sun is available for rent or purchase for streaming. Check out your local library to borrow the film as well.

Check out your local library or independent bookshop to read Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes. More of Frances’ books are available on her website.

The RomCom Roundtable
Episode 13: Villa Amore - A Surprise Bonus Episode!

Sorpresa! We have a bonus episode for you in our miniseries, The RomCom Roundtable Goes to Italy!

We’re reviewing Hallmark’s Villa Amore, starring Kevin McGarry and Eloise Mumford.

Set in Capena near Rome, Villa Amore tells the story of Liara who travels to Italy after a breakup and she purchases a 1 Euro villa in Italy. When she arrives at her new home, she meets Leo, an American ex-pat, who helps her renovate the home.

Villa Amore is available on Hallmark+.

The film premiered in June 2025 as part of the Hallmark summer series: A Passport to Love.

We recorded this episode shortly after the film's premiere this summer.

(We also reviewed one of the other films from this year's Passport to Love series: A Machu Picchu Proposal, and we interviewed one of the stars of the film, Alec Santos!)

In this episode, we talk about how the film presents the logistics and reality of the 1 Euro / low cost housing investment programs compared to La Dolce Villa. Check out the previous episode to hear our review of La Dolce Villa.

Please note that we reference in the episode that the lead characters experience panic attacks. We liked how this film depicts how the characters were vulnerable, the techniques they use to take care of their mental health, and how the male protagonist shared his experience in going to therapy. This discussion occurs between minutes 11-13 in the episode.

Don’t forget to follow the pod for future episodes and check out our socials on Instagram @theromcomroundtable. We’re growing our social media and in the future will have Patreon! Enjoy the episode! Comment below if you’ve been to Italy, if you watched either Villa Amore or La Dolce Villa, and what you thought about today’s episode.

Episode 12: La Dolce Villa

Ciao a tutti! Our next review of the miniseries #TheRomComRoundtableGoestoItaly is here! Today we’ll be reviewing Netflix’s La Dolce Villa, starring Scott Foley, Violante Placido, and Maia Reficco.

Set in Tuscany, La Dolce Villa tells the story of culinary consultant Eric (Scott Foley) who travels to Italy to stop his daughter (Maia Reficco) from buying and restoring a historic villa.

La Dolce Villa is available on Netflix.

La Dolce Villa premiered in February 2025 and is directed by Mark Waters, whose credits include Mean Girls, 500 Days of Summer, and Freaky Friday.

The film was co-written by Elizabeth Hackett, who wrote Falling Inn Love, and Hilary Galanoy, who wrote Love, Guaranteed. Both Hackett and Galanoy co-wrote Perfect Pairing. All of these films are also available on Netflix.

In this episode, we talk about the 1 Euro / low cost housing investment programs that have recently become popular and the reality of participating in these programs. We refer to an interesting article from Italy Magazine.

I Live in Small-Town Italy. Here’s My Unfiltered Take on Netflix’s “La Dolce Villa.”

We give a shout out to Stanley Tucci in our cold open and talk about Italo disco music.

A note about this episode and a behind the scenes of the miniseries, this is an episode we re-recorded following some technical difficulties we had experienced with the original recording (which we mentioned in an earlier update episode of the pod). This episode contains part of both recordings. We also rewatched the film again prior to re-recording the episode which provided some additional insights into our review.

Please note as well that there is a DV reference from the article above about one of the side characters’ relationship in the film. We were concerned with the depiction of the unhealthy nature of that relationship, which we briefly mention in the episode. This discussion takes place between 56:20-57:30.

Episode 5: Hallmark Highlights: A Royalty Triology

Welcome to the RomCom Roundtable! In this episode, we feature our first Hallmark Highlights! We take a look at the latest series - a Royalty Trilogy in fact! - of the most recent Hallmark original movies. That’s right! We review three movies in this episode!

Join Caitie & Matthieu’s spirited and honest conversation as we review the March 2025 Hallmark originals: The Royal We, The Reluctant Royal, and Royal-ish - part of what we're calling the Hallmark Royalty Universe!

In The Royal We, Princess Bea is called back to royal life after her sister leaves her fiance Prince Desmond to elope with a non-royal.

In The Reluctant Royal, a mechanic finds out he is the heir to a dukedom. He travels to the estate to meet his father and learn about his family history.

In Royal-ish, a theme park cast member playing a princess is asked by the Crown Prince to be the governess for his daughter.

All three films are available on Hallmark+.

In addition to our thoughts on these films, we visit the History Corner, Geography Corner, and the Amusement Park Corner in this episode! We talk about the origins of the Royal We, Philly geography, and amusement parks, including our favorites at Epcot, Wonderland, and Knoebels!

Episode 4: 13 Going On 30

Welcome to the RomCom Roundtable! In this episode, we break out the neon and leg warmers, turn up Whitney Houston & Pat Benatar, tune up the keytar, and find some pop rocks for a movie snack and our trapper keepers to take notes as we review 13 Going on 30!

This 2004 box office hit is often seen on the top RomComs of the early 2000s and features an all star cast with Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, Judy Greer and Andy Serkis and a soundtrack of 80s music classics!

Jenna wishes to be 30, flirty, and thriving after being humiliated at her 13th birthday party; she ends up time traveling into the future, as a 30-year-old fashion magazine editor.

13 Going on 30 is available on Netflix.

In addition to our thoughts on this film, we talk about the experience of going to the movies in an age where we have so many streaming platforms for film and television and nostalgia in the movies.

We ventured to the philosophy corner in this episode - we thought this film asked some deep questions. What do you think?

Episode 3: The Knight Before Christmas

Welcome to the RomCom Roundtable!! In this episode, we explore time travel, being a fish out of water, and achieving a medieval quest all in time for Christmas with The Knight Before Christmas (2019). The Knight Before Christmas was one of the films that got Matthieu into watching the made for streaming RomComs.

Starring Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Whitehouse, a 14th-century English knight time travels to modern-day Ohio, where he falls for a high school science teacher who's disillusioned by love.

The Knight Before Christmas is available on Netflix.

We talk about The Netflix Christmas Universe and how The Knight Before Christmas is part of a series of interconnected movies around the holiday season. We brainstorm a three act storyline with a potential prequel (“A Dalliance with the Douche” - a reference in the film) and a possible sequel with Sir Cole’s brother Geoffrey starting his quest.

We also take a trip to the history corner (something you’ll see in future episodes lol)! We talk about the references to the Middle Ages that Sir Cole mentions in the film, including the bean in the bread, mistletoe, and the House of Plantagenet.

Caitie talks about her time studying in London and traveling in England. We love talking about our travels - which is how we became friends! Stay tuned for more travel stories in future episodes!

Episode 2: Recipe for Love

Welcome to the RomCom Roundtable!! In our second episode, we debut our first review! Mentioned in our first episode, we review a Hallmark original film, Recipe for Love (2014).

Starring Danielle Panabaker and Shawn Roberts, Lauren is an aspiring chef and dreams of attending Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. She works as a recipe tester for a food magazine and is assigned to ghost write a recipe book for a celebrity chef, Dexter, who is very reluctant to write the book and wants to focus on his restaurant. They clash over cooking styles and whether they should follow the recipe or cook from the soul. Through cooking and creating the book, they find connection and learn more about themselves and each other.

Ron Oliver, director for The Groomsmen Triology, also directed Recipe for Love.

In our first review, we talk about the film, our key takeaways (including "Collaboration is Cool" lol), our favorite supporting characters and quotes from the film. Recipe for Love was one of the first Hallmark movies that Caitie watched after a recommendation from her friend.

Recipe for Love is available on Hallmark+
